I think the main motive was for the natural resources and economic gain that they would have from taking over. Since Africa is so rich in minerals, they would benefit from their abundance of minerals like diamonds. The Europeans would also gain the addition of more land and territories.

It is natural human nature to have power over others, but it was also easy for Europeans to take over Africa because it was relatively close to Europe location wise. But there is also the fact that there were lots of gold and diamonds in Africa, which gives them even more power if they obtain the diamonds and gold. And since the locals can't get it themselves, then they can just take it from them. Additionally, there were lots of people who were already living there and the Europeans could enslave them, and they wouldn't be able to fight back which makes it even easier for the Europeans to take over Africa.
