Inspired by the powerful imagery of Ray Brookes ‘s original sculpture of a man of Clay poet Kevin Fegan and Fine Artist Director Rikki Tarascas joined forces to form the production company El Inocente to assemble a team of artists and performers to create the Clayman a site specific event.
The 3 artists had collaborated previously on projects with the seminal outdoor events company Welfare State International.

Taking theatre back to Ritual .
The Clayman at Upper Campfield Market, another performance Venue to be open in The City of Drama year,is the latest play of Kevin Fegan . Inspired by the work of sculptor Ray Brookes, who designs the show,the Manchester based playwright has teamed up with the director Rikki Tarascas to produce ‘an electrifying piece of contemporary theatre’. 
Into a world predominantly populated by oily ,shark toothed psychotics arrives the octomorphic Clay man (magnetic performance from Simon Startin ,an exciting talent )..determined to make sense of this family of social misfits.
The ensuing fusion of visual imagery ,fire eating and the wonderful cacophony of percussion and DJ fed dance music celebrates the totality of theatre in knowing hands.
An elaborately gothicky punk funeral cortege lures the bedazzled audience to the site of the ritual : a circular stage constructed from the earth .This enigmatic start has a salient point to establish.Theatre like the environment is made up of the past (memories ,history ,even dead bodies ,but it has a vitality that determines the future.El Inocente,the company formed for this production intelligently juxtaposes an ecological awareness against a global obsession with materialistic values 
 
This is the Iron Man for the nineties.
