Focus Group:

Focus groups are a bunch of people who the company or the publisher of the product would bring them together to ask about their product before launch. So they can to get feedback and responses about their product.
The producers of Deadpool definitely used focus groups and test screenings for the film. Nearly every big budget film has test screenings but for Deadpool, it was very important to have one because the movie was a gamble from the start. The studio failed to get the Deadpool character right in the first place, so this was a huge risk. They would use test screenings so they could get feedback about the film and after their test screening people reacted positively, the studio were happy and it all snowballed into a big, successful franchise. According to the reports the test screening for Deadpool 2 did poorly and with the feedback it got, the studio arranged to do reshoots on the film. Those reshoots mainly changed the character of Cable. Originally he was going to be the villain in the entire film but as we have seen he becomes an anti-hero like Deadpool. The reshoots changed and evolved Cable into an anti-hero. This is good example of studios listening to the feedback they got from test screenings and focus groups.

Surveys/Questionnaires are a set of questions that is presented to the audience. It is a different way of getting feedback from people about the product. The studio and the producers of Deadpool whould have used surveys to get feedback from people. They would have published it on the internet because it is the most popular way of getting feedback from people. They would have used sites like, Twitter, FaceBook, YouTube, Survey Monkey etc. but it doesn't have to be just on the internet, they would have handed surveys to people in the cinemas or places near the cinemas and Comic-Cons. Comic-Cons would be the perfect place to hand a survey about a superhero film.

Deadpool made $783 Million worldwide. It was a big hit for the studio because it had a budget of $58 Million. The producers and the studio would definitely have checked the box office numbers for this film. They didn't have a lot of faith in this film and we can see that with the budget of the film. These box office numbers were a big delight for them. They would, and many other studios, check box office so that they can have a plan for the future, to make sequels and franchises out of it. In Deadpools case, it made enough to make a new franchise with multiple sequels already in the works.

The producers would categorise people in age, gender, location and many more that is very important for them because it will give them an idea of what type of people are interested in their product. All of this would lead into target audiences. The target audience for Deadpool would first of all be comic book fans. People who were waiting for ages for a Deadpool film. The age range for the film would be 15 to 45+ year olds. I would say the majority of the audience is males and it is aimed at males. We can see that in the jokes that it contains. It is targeted for worldwide audience but mostly North America and Europe. The studio and the producers would want to get more money from China but unfortunately China doesn't show R rated movies which Deadpool is. It is also appealing to the LGBT community with featuring the charcter Negasonic Teenage Warhead and her partner in the sequel. The movie is aimed at literary everyone, that is appropriate for the age, that likes comedy, action and a good time at the cinema. They are also releasing a PG-13 version of Deadpool 2 titled Once Upon A Deadpool that will appeal to the younger audience because it will not feature all the R rated things in that movie. This way the studio will bring in more fans and more money.

Niche and Mainstream:

Niche could be any product that appeals to a small specific type of fans or people. Niche products don't have a lot of budget, they are limited in a lot of aspects and these things make the fans follow niche things. Unlike niche, mainstream is the complete opposite. Mainstream products have a big budget, they want to appeal to everyone, get fans from all over the world and if it's a movie, it will feature big, recognisable names in the industry to bring in more people and make new fans. Deadpool is a mainstream movie and soon it will be a mainstream franchise. We can see that it's mainstream from the budget, which isn't a lot compared to other super hero films but still a lot more than niche films, the cast, the studio etc. The movie stars a big name in the industry, Ryan Reynolds. That is clear indication that it's mainstream. But for me, before seeing the film I would have considered Deadpool as a niche product. The character was relatively known in among comic book fans but wasn't that A list character. Before the film I would have said Deadpool is going to be a niche property, and it will not make that much money, even though it stars Ryan Reynolds. But after the movie was released, I was convinced that it's definitely mainstream and the money it brought in the box office was clear indication.

It seemed like everyone, including myself, really like the film, the characters, and the humour because there was a question "What elements of the film did you enjoy?" and some of us has answered saying the characters, and the humuor. Another question was "Do you think it is a good idea to produce a sequel?" and we all answered, "Yes.". From the survey I gathered that people liked the character Deadpool because I asked "Did you like the main character?" and everyone that answered said "Yes". For the second question I asked "What was your favourite scene?" and I got answers like "The bridge fight", "When Deadpool was fighting Colossus", "The 12 bullets scene", and "When Wade Wilson confronted the pizza guy". Lastly, I asked "What would you rate the film out 5 stars?" everyone answered with 5 stars. So, from everything that I have gathered, I can see that people really liked the film and the character of Deadpool. The producers, the studio, and everyone involved in this film must be happy of what they have achieved.
The positives of doing a focus group is that people can elaborate when filming or recording, and because we asked them in person, we can tell if and why they liked the characters or the film. The negatives would be that people might be influenced by other peoples answers and the might not say what they are actually thinking. Another negative would be that doing a focus group might take time because everyone has to get ready to filmed and all the preparation. The positives of doing a survey is that it is a quick and an instant way of getting feedback about the product. One of the biggest negatives would be people can't elaborate other people about how they feel. So, they just select the answer. People also might just answer the questions without reading the questions. For me, doing a survey was the most useful way of getting feedback because it was quick and easy to make and answer. But, I enjoyed doing the focus group more even though I prefer doing surveys.

This was an intentional miss marketing technique. They did this on purpose because that how Deadpool would do it. All of the marketing for this film were set up like that. This billboard, in my opinion, was a smart one.

There is a lot things that might appeal to men in this trailer. The action would be the selling point for the male audience. The action from the bridge fight is a perfect example for this trailer because it features superhero action and humour. The actual suit could appeal to male audiences as well because nowadays when we see a suit in the big screen we automatically think superheroes and who doesn't like superheroes. The music is up beat so it might be appealing to male audiences. The trailer also features Deadpool's girlfriend, Vanessa, which will appeal to men.

Positive: There are strong female characters in Deadpool like Angel Dust and Negasonic Teenage Warhead. These characters are strong because they can stand up for themselves. People are afraid of Angel Dust like Wade's friend, Wessel and we even see Angel Dust taking on Colossus in this scene. These characters have amazing powers, like Negasonic can take out multiple bad guys at once and vice versa. They are also not sexualised like classic Hollywood female characters. Especially Negasonic looks different to any other female superhero, and this makes the character and the film interesting.
Negative: The main negative representation of women in this film is Vanessa. She is over sexualised for story purposes and for the audience. She mainly wears short dresses through the film. Characters like this will bring in ore people to see the film. She relies on men to save her, like Wade. She is not strong, unlike her comic book counterpart who is a shape-shifting mutant who is a part of X-Force.

Deadpool is a non-linear film. The film features a lot of flashbacks to the characters past and showing how he got these powers and became Deadpool. It was a smart way to set up a origin for the character. We can also it's non linear because the beginning of the film, where they are at the bridge, is actually the middle of the film.
Hero: A person who goes on a quest that is important for him/her. Usually it's the 'good guy' in the story. In this case it's Deadpool. He is trying to save his girlfriend Vanessa, from being captured by Ajax. Even though his actions show that he is an anti-hero, he still tries to do the right thing.
Princess: The character can be the hero's reward and the object of the villains schemes. In this case it's Vanessa. She gets captured by Ajax so that Deadpool can come save her and face him. After defeating Ajax, Deadpool saves Vanessa and she is his reward for this quest.
Villain: This character is the complete opposite of the hero. He/She is usually evil and has little empathy for any thing or any one. At the end, the villain is usually taught a lesson or is defeated by 'good'. Ajax is the villain of this film. He uses his powers for evil and bad things where as, at times, Deadpool uses it for good things, so this makes Ajax the opposite of Deadpool. He is in the way of the hero's quest and reward. He doesn't really show any empathy over any one. And the end he is defeated by the 'good', Deadpool, but gets killed rather than learning a lesson.
Enigma Codes: Enigma codes are when a film gives audiences mysteries to unsolve while watching. The biggest question the film asks to the audience is at the beginning. Why is Wade looking for Ajax? and What has he done?. We later learn that Ajax experimented on Wade to bring out his mutant powers. Because of the cancer he had it affected his skin and all along Wade wanted him to fix his face. The film also asks questions like Who is this character? and why they don't like each other?. We get these answers easily and it makes the film easy to watch because it's straight forward. Deadpool is Wade Wilson and doesn't like the main villain Ajax because he messed up his life and also captured his girlfriend, Vanessa.
For binary oppositions, we can say that there few. Like, Deadpool is the good guy and follows the good route while Ajax is bad and follows the bad route. Deadpool tries to save people around him but Ajax doesn't mind hurting people around him. There is a young vs old scenario happening with Negasonic and Colossus. Negasonic is a young adult or teen that has different characteristics compared to Colossus, where as Colossus is a like a big protective dad to her and is probably middle aged. There is also a difference in the female characters, Vanessa and Angle Dust. They have chosen different paths in life. Vanessa choose to be an escort but is a good person with no intention of harming anyone but Angel Dust, who is a mutant, chose to go in bad path and partnered with Ajax and the 'bad' company he works for. These opposite paths make, not just Deadpool but any film interesting.
