What I drew was a plant that mama had. This one is the family and how the small first one is Travis growing  the one on the other side is Walter Lee and he is dead and from his dead plant there is a smaller one growing from it that makes it that Walter is learning and growing. The other plant up from Walter is Ruth and how she has a plant that is her new baby. The other side of Ruths is Beneatha. She is a flower as she is becoming someone that learns what they want to do and a bee Asagai is helping the flower bloom showing how he is helping her grow and show her true colors and beauty. 

          A Raisin In The Sun

A Raisin In the Sun is a great play written by Lorraine Hansberry in 1959 that describes a story in the south side of Chicago, of our given protagonist,
Walter Lee Younger. 

A “negro” that would be called back then in that time is someone living with his family being his wife Ruth, his son Travis,his grandma Lena and his sister beneatha. Inside a little small house somewhat struggling with debt but still managing to do stuff for the better for his family. With what we’re shown and given it seems while they don’t necessarily like their mid house, they’re still doing fine.

In some point later on, the family found out with the death of their grandfather, Walter younger, had given insurance money to the family coming out of 10,000$

 With that money Walter Lee plans on opening up a liquor store, but people such as beneatha argue that it’s mama Lena’s money and she decides what to do with it. And when it did come, later on Mama Lena coming from somewhere to the house, inside Mama Lena walked towards Travis as he came home,

 and told him with Ruth and Walter listening, she bought him a big nice house. Travis, is enthusiastic with this info, is happy, Ruth is celebrating, but Walter is distraught after hearing this.

A few days later Walter skipped going to work and instead went into the same bar continuously and drank. One of those days mama Lena went to confront him, after a hard conversation, mama Lena gives him the remaining money of 6500$ 

After buying the house and trusts him to spend it on his liquor store and Beneatha's medical degree or smth.

Walter, with his 2 friends Willy and Bobo, entrusted each other to gather the money for some reason I unfortunately can’t remember. But coming back was only.. one of them, being Bobo. Walter is confused and anxious on why he’s the only one back and his money is not with him or..them. 

 And he explains that….. The other friend Willy,.. Took the money and ran with it.

Everyone in the living room that hears this breaks down with tears.

What feels like forever after that day, Walter then calls Mr.Linder, someone who is part of Clybourne park department or smth discriminating against the Younger family and offered previously more money than mama Lena paid for the house for them not to live there. But was Rejected.

But now Walter wants to accept that money as a last resort. Everyone in the family is seemingly distraught by what Walter is doing. Mr.Linder arrives and everyone in the room is paying attention to what Walter will do. After reevaluating everything that has happened, after a great speech, Walter yet again…rejects the offer that Mr.Linder gave again.

Which means they still get to move in the house because they already put that down payment, they can live in the new house.

The story ends with everyone in the family being happy and enthusiastic and leaving the house ready for the next chapter of their lives in a new home.

This story in my opinion is very good, I like how it jumps to different themes such as family working to live, hope for a good future, grief and such an emotional tone. This story does it well enough that it doesn't feel badly paced or unnecessary to the subject matter. 

The characters were even great, especially the character dynamic. 

Walter to people may seem as dumb or the main villain of the story when I feel that wasn’t the case. At worst I think he is an antagonist but not a major villain in the story, he goes through what I feel is a character arc. In the beginning he goes from someone that is struggling to do some stuff for his family but mostly himself, to a loving dad that now loves his family a lot and learns more about being careful. 

Ruth is the loving wife that is always consistent with her character of always trying to understand Walter and calm him down, and always stuck by mama Lena I notice. 

Travis, well he isn’t really shown or given much screen time but he does give the characters the knowledge for the scene to keep going and was a fun little character.

Mama Lena was my favorite character, she was always one to keep control and understand everyone, and that character trait stays consistent throughout the whole story.

Beneatha was kind of a one off character that was there for funny moments, kind of a comic relief character but she was in a lot of reasoning for the other characters. to keep the exhibition flow in the scenes to keep going.

How I think the story makes the characters be like, is always wanting the best for each other. A quote that I think can sum up what they want, is “is there a whole light of sunlight.” Showing how right now they are going on the path to make everything better to make everyone in the family happy, despite everything they are going through. 

The text/performance in A Raisin In The Sun greatly conveys the tones of what they are targeting, such as the emotional and imprtant moments of the story. As the character dynamic that this story nails is greatly amplified in showing these tones more effectively for the viewer. Such as the scene in the bar where mama Lena gave Walter the money, it was such a powerful scene that is really important between the characters for the viewers to understand. The characters being portrayed naturally for us to care about shows more on what they want to show, because we can take it seriously. As well as the scene in the house where Beneatha says that God doesn't exist, and Mama Lena slaps her replying to repeat what she says,”In my house there is still God.” But for the messages that I can think what they are implying is never giving up no matter how bleak the situation may be. Being with all the lows that the younger family is going through, such as mid living conditions, debt, discrimination with other limitations in living. 

How Lorraine Hansberry shows this through the characters is shown with their actions alongside the themes that were previously mentioned.

With everyhtinng that has been sumed up so far A Rasin In The Sun is a great story with great messages and a great life lesson in people’s surroundings, even with this story/movie being outdated it still holds up with what it has to say, which I think as a critic is a great thing. Overall I give this story a 8/10 as it does what it wants really well and it’s a simple story that any viewer can understand and can always feel engaged, not anything mind boggling and crazy but nevertheless still agreat story.

Struggles of the Younger Family the Younger family's dream of moving to a better neighborhood represents the challenges Black families faced in the 1950s due to racism and housing discrimination. They want a better life, but systemic barriers like redlining and restrictive housing policies keep them in poorer, segregated areas. When the Youngers try to buy a home in a white neighborhood, they face resistance, showing how hard it was for Black families to break out of these limitations.

This mirrors real life practices in cities like Chicago and San Leandro, where policies deliberately kept Black families out of certain neighborhoods. These restrictions didn’t just impact where they could live but also prevented them from building wealth and finding new opportunities. The play uses the Youngers' story to highlight how racism affected their dreams and everyday lives, making it harder for them to move up in society.

“I got to change my life, I’m choking to death, baby! And his woman say Your eggs is getting cold!”

This quote shows Walter Lee Younger’s frustration and desire for change, representing the struggles of many Black families to find a better life.

Connection to Themes The Younger family faces similar issues. They want to buy a home in a nicer neighborhood to give themselves a better life, but they face resistance and pressure to stay in their current situation. This connects to the theme of unfulfilled dreams, as their hopes for a better future are blocked by racial injustice. The play highlights how these types of barriers make it hard for Black families to succeed, even when they work hard.

The issues that the Younger family faces are still relevant today, as the effects of redlining and housing discrimination continue to impact people. By showing these struggles, the play emphasizes the importance of fighting for equality and fair treatment, so that everyone has an equal chance to pursue their dreams.

Conclusion

By linking historical context about housing discrimination and redlining to the Younger family’s struggles in A Raisin in the Sun, this project shows how deep-rooted systemic racism affects people’s lives. Understanding these connections helps us recognize the need to address these issues in our society today.

I couldn't get my Audio Mic to work but I did put the recording of the art.

My art for the final project of A Raisin in the Sun features Beneatha, one of the youngers family who had a dream of becoming a doctor. I put her as the main character in my art because I am really interested on her ideal dream and struggles she have faced. Her dream are to become a doctor but her family does not understand her on dreaming so far yet so big. She is one of the character that is very open and creative to which I think her character is complex. Her overall goal really shined in this play.
