I think the reason companies use these characters is to make it fun and interesting. They are also giving their company a mascot so when people see that mascot they straight away know it's your company. Like when I see Ronald Mcdonald the first thing i think is mcdonalds.

Because every time you see them then you will recognize them and know who they are so they will be eye catching to you and you will want to buy their product if you have tried one of the foods they have been on the packaging for so you buy it. Also because it makes it more child friendly to children because they are the target customers for the product so the initial design will be like a cartoony version of an animal or a character maybe from an animation or cartoon.
