I like to talk with them about something they have interest in or something they are involved in. It’s a way of checking in and giving them an opportunity to talk. I try to take something they mention and revisit it to show them I was listening or that I’m interested in what they are sharing.

At the beginning of the semester, I have students complete a survey with questions about their hobbies, interests, favorite things, etc. I take time to read all of them and find common ground. It gives me opportunities to engage with students on a more personal level instead of constantly focusing on academics.

Somethings that I like to do are make dad jokes to the class, ask each student at some point during each class how they’re doing, and to ask students “What’s the password” when they return to class from the bathroom.
