Oshiro, M. (2021). The insiders. Harper Collins.

Hector Muñoz is dealing with a lot. His family has moved from San Francisco to a small, California town. While there is joy in the move, being closer to his abuela and learning more about his family traditions, there is no theater program at his school, and Hector seems to be the only out, gay student. Things get worse when Mike, a school bully, targets him not only for being gay, but for being Hispanic as well. The only escape Hector finds from Mike's daily torments is a mysterious Janitor's closet. When he enters the closet, he finds more than mops and brooms, but a space that gives him exactly what he needs. A space that seems to be enchanted with an inexplicable sort of Magic. Hector even meets friends from other states, who have also sought refuge in The Room. What some are calling a new imagining of Narnia, this book is a wonderful story for students in 3rd and beyond.
