The city of Athens was made up of many city-states. In the 400s BC, the city-state of Athens covered a large area of land. Altogether, about 250, 00 people lived in the city-state (Source A). In those times, the clothing was definitely not what we wear today. Their clothing which women made was made out of wool and mohair. They wore simple tunics which is basically a long dress and a cloak. Their housing in ancient Athens was very private as they were secluded from the street, they had limited windows and furniture, floors were beaten earth, the courtyard was in the middle used for cooking, slaves slept on floors and last but not least, there were no mattresses on the beds. As for the food, only rich people ate the wild boar and deer; roast camel and peacock. Whereas the others ate crickets, cicadas, olives, grapes and barely. They also had a vegetable and seafood diet. In addition, the agora was an economic, political, legal and social heart of the city (Source B). Only men and slaves would go to the agora, not wives. At the agora, fresh produce was sold, e.g. olive oil was sold for food and for the burning of
lamps. Last but not least, ancient Athens was made up of several of things. These include, The Parthenon (which is the largest and most important temple). It was built between 447BC and 432BC, in the honour of goddess Athena. Also in Athens, there was a huge, 12 metre statue of Athena, which stood inside the temple. This statue was made from gold ivory and timber. Lastly, there was a tall hill that overlooked Athens, where most of the Athens temple, alstars and sacred statues stood there (Source A).

COMPARING THE LIFE IN ATHENS TO SPARTAN LIFE

In a socialist state the community as a whole would rather than an individual owns and controls land, industry and other economic needs. The socialist ideal is for people to be financially and therefore socially equal. To socialism Sparta added militarism, with the state being geared for constant warfare and to fight for the state, boys were trained for childhood. In Sparta, no foreigns were allowed to live there as it was what we call a ‘closed society’ very like North Korea today. In comparison, Athens was a democracy. In a democracy, people are politically and legally equal. Individuals own their land, business, and other economic needs, but wealth is unevenly distributed, creating poor and wealthy social classes (Source B). Spartans used the same ingredients as the rest of Greece: olives, cheese, wheat, and barley. Fish, poultry, and meat were also consumed, although at communal dinners, these were generally reserved for younger men. Home was very different in ancient Sparta. The men lived in the barracks. Women lived in homes. Husbands visited but they did not live at home. When the boys were old enough, they joined their fathers in the barracks. In ancient Greece, women had far more freedom maybe because their husbands were often off fighting somewhere. It was up to the women, and injured or very old men, to keep the community going while the men were gone (Source C). Sparta and Athens were both so different in their politics and lifestyle, which they could not get on with each other and fought a war that lasted for 30 years (Source B).

Pericles was military and political leader of Athens. He contributed to the development of
Athenian democracy by opening the archonship becoming the dominant Greek city-state in the Delian league. Pericles was an influential person during the Peloponnesian War, and he rose to power from being in the law courts. He was
successful in banishing his political enemies; by means of ostracism was a way for an Athenian to practise democracy, aside from electing leaders. However, it also meant the banishment of someone out of Athens. Without his rivals, he was one the most powerful men in all of Athens, and took charge over all the Athenian navy army. Pericles also passed some laws to gain support from the masses, such as free theatre plays for the poor, the rebuilding of Athens due to the war, and a law that made jury service something to be paid for (Source F).

Throughout his administration, the Athenians were allowed to occupy public offices, even if they were poor. They would gain a special salary if they attended courts as jurors, and at the same time this gave them the opportunity to dedicate public service without having to pay and facing financial hardship, but also gave them the public life (Source E).
