         <description><![CDATA[<div><strong><em>BUSINESS</em></strong><br>-Tan Tock Seng saved up enough money to open a shop along the riverside at Boat Quay.<br>-Was also proved to be a fine businessman, likely spoke English and made fortune when entered into some speculation with an English friend, Mr J.H Whitehead.<br>-Tan Tock Seng landed properties included 50 acres of land, near the Tanjong Pagar railway station, tracts of land stretching from the Padang up to High Street and Tank Road.<br>-Owns block of shophouses at Ellenborough Building nad a 14 acre fruit plantation opposite St. Andrew's Mission Hospital.<br><strong><em>LEADER</em></strong><br>-Tan Tock Seng then became an influential Chinese Leader and was the fist Asian to be made Justice Of Peace by Governor William John Butterworth.&nbsp;<br>-Was skillful at settling feuds among the Chinese and gave widely to charitable causes. For example, the burial of destitude Chinese, as a proper funeral was important for the Chinese, rich or poor.<br>-Who is one of the founders of Singapore's oldest temple, the Thian Hock Keng Temple at Telok Ayer.<br><br></div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div><strong><em>DONATIONS</em></strong><br>Tan Tock Seng stepped forward to donate 7000 Spanish Dollars and his most famous donation was $5000 towards the first hospital for the poor. <br><strong><em>RENAMED </em></strong><strong><br>-</strong>Later on, that building, the Chinese Pauper Hospital was renamed as Tan Tock Seng Hospital at Pearl's Hill.&nbsp;<br>-Tan Tock Seng made a call for the hospital to care not only for the Chinese, but also the "sick poor of all nations."</div>]]></description>
