Achilles, the greatest warrior in all of Greece, is the most important character in the story and his development as a character drives the entire story. When the leader of the Greek army, Agamemnon, pisses him off by taking away one of the women he won in battle, Achilles refuses to fight in the war against the Trojans. He is both extremely selfish and extremely arrogant. However, when his best friend Patroclus is killed in battle, Achilles loses it and goes to fight in the war. He destroys everyone in his way and the tide of battle turns in favor of the Greeks. This turns him into the hero he is known as.

Summary

Homer's The Iliad was written some time in the eight century but has remained extremely popular to this day. The story is about a small part of the Trojan War. An ancient War between the Trojans and the Greeks. However, there is many instances of the Greek Gods interfering with the humans of the war. The story begins with a dispute between the leader of the Greek army, Agamemnon and their finest warrior Achilles. Agamemnon and Achilles each take a woman for themselves during the war, but the God Apollo hits the Greek Army with a plague until the woman are returned. Agamemnon gives the one he took, Chryses back so Apollo's plaque stops but he takes Achilles' woman, Briseis from him. This makes Achilles very angry and he no longer fights in the war, devastating the Greek army. The War continues but nothing really significant happens except for the several different Greek Gods continuing to mess things up for each side. The story changes when Achilles' best friend, Patroclus is killed in battle by the Trojan Hector. After a huge battle occurs over the body of Patroclus, who was wearing the armor of Achilles takes places, Achilles hears the news of his friends death. Achilles unleashes his power on the Trojan army, killing Hector, the Trojan's best warrior and the one who killed Patroclus, Achilles' best friend.Achilles then tied Hector's body to his chariot and rides in circles around the Trojans, mocking there finest warrior and proving his superiority. The story ends with Hector's funeral. We are never even told who wins the war. The Iliad is one of two epic poems written by Homer, the other being the Odyssey and although these ancient tales have been around a long time, they still remain both extremely relevant and popular.

Homer's writing style is not cliche in any way and his works, especially The Iliad are innovative in both style and structure because they are completely packed with events after events and feature too many character to keep track of. These aspects are what makes this work so special and keep readers engaged and wanting the read more. There is so much of both action and drama and the mix of love and war was extremely innovative especially considering the it was written in the eighth century.
