Jean-Jacques was born on June 28, 1712 in Geneva, Switzerland. Sadly a few days later his mother died, leaving only his father to raise him. He did have a brother but he ran away when Jean-Jacques was still young. One day his father got in a argument with a French Captain and had a likelihood of going to prison. Because of this his father fled Geneva deciding never to come back home. This left Jean-Jacques to live with his mother´s side of the family. He did not have a great relationship with his mother´s side of the family so he also fled Geneva.

Jean-Jacques was very lucky because Louise-Eleanor took him in and then made him her employer. She also helped him with his education, which led him to being a philosopher, author, and even a musician! As Jean-Jacques and Louise-Eleanor spent more time together they realized they had feelings for each other, but when he was done serving the French Embassy in Venice he went back to Paris and met Therese Levasseur. They got married in 1768 and had 5 children but they left them in a orphanage in Pairs.

Jean-Jacques had many other accomplishments then just being a Enlightenment Thinker. He wrote a play called Narcisse ou l’amant de lui-même (Narcissus or the lover of himself). One of his best known works was a novel! It is called Julie or the New Heloise. It is about the story of St. Preux and and Julie d’EtangeSt., who were time lovers. In the novel he used his own feelings at the time and wove them throughout the story.

The 1st Discourse

The 1st Discourse is one of Jean-Jacques main philosophies. It is also one of his best known successes. It consists of 2 parts. The essay was written about the question asked by the Academy of Djion. The question asked “Has the restoration of the sciences and arts tended to purify morals?”. In the 1st half of the essay he writes about how science and art can manipulate human ethics. The 2nd part consists of a inspection of the dangers of science and art. This Discourse is also more popular than its 2nd half called Discourse on the Origin of Inequality.

In my opinion I think that the government would be drastically different if we didn't have Jean-Jacques. What I think would be different would be our rights. He made a huge change to what our individual rights and freedoms were. We wouldn't be able to have protests, freedom of religion, freedom of speech, and many more. Another thing that would be very different would be education. He made a point to make sure that kids would have freedom to grow in when they are being educated.

The Discourse on the Origin of Inequality(2nd Discourse)is the other half to the 1st Discourse. It is also one of his philosophies but, it is not as well known as the 1st Discourse. This essay has 4 main parts. The question for this essay was asked by the Academy Dijon. The question is “What is the origin of inequality among men; and is it authorized by the natural law?”. He proposes that a long time ago people would live by themselves claiming that people started out with no social interaction.
