On October 2, 2024 at UCLA Health A recent study led by UCLA and UNC researchers examined the language development patterns of low-income and ethnically diverse children with autism. This project seeks to assess behavioral and neural markers to better understand language development in underrepresented populations. This research can lead to earlier and more targeted interventions.

Meanwhile, another child spent more time in front of screens and did not make significant speech development and struggled with language, reminding us that real-life interactions are essential for language development.

As an educator, if I see a child struggling with their language skills, I will speak my truth by telling the children about when I started speaking and the struggles that I had/have. Also, I will be honest with the children when they are struggling with a word and do so with love and care and not judgement.

Parents can speak with their children rather than at them by asking them questions and by actively engaging in conversations with their children. When talking at children, parents usually tell the children something that doesn't involve an answer or conversation.
