What's so complicated about school uniforms?

The topic of school uniforms has been debated through its pros and cons. In some school systems, uniforms have been implemented and required of students. Other schools allow their students to choose what they are wearing. The people who approve school uniforms argue that they can make schools safer, increase student attendance, and that test scores can be higher. People who disprove of this system say that uniforms are constricting students’ freedom of expression and speech of young people (Yeung, 2009). I’m now going to explain the results of real studies used that compared test scores, safety in schools, and more factors tested with the focus of how uniforms impact them.

One study looks at the effect of school uniforms on achievement. The result of testing these kids and comparing their performance showed no significant relationship between uniforms and performance (Yeung, 2009). Another study looked at test scores and student behavior. They looked at schools in the USA and in Canada, in addition to 37 other countries. This study concluded that uniforms increase student discipline, which in turn had those students listen better (Baumann, 2016).

In terms of behavior, uniforms seem to either have a significant effect or have no effect at all. Schools that already have an established standard of discipline seemed to have that behavior improved through the implementation of uniforms. On the other hand, schools that didn’t have that same foundation suffered under the requirement of uniforms. Lower income schools also struggle with getting and upholding the standard of uniforms. One study cited another that showed uniforms had no direct effect on the behavior of students. It also did not seem to have an effect on substance use or attendance (Brunsma, 1998).

Since many studies are so contradictory, it’s fair to conclude that many other factors play into determining whether school uniforms will be effective or not.
