Theme: Issue of social acceptance

Everyone wants to be accepted in the world, right? Just ask the unnamed creature in Mary Shelley's novel, Frankenstein. In the novel, Frankenstein's creature is created and immediately after, left alone to fend for himself. He alone learns how to control and understand his senses, impact his environment, and skills such as reading. It is also around this time that the creature begins to observe human behavior and social structure, made possible by a tiny hole in the wall of the De Lacey house that allowed the creature to watch the family engage in their daily routines. During the time the creature spent watching the De Lacey family, he learns from them and also analyzes his own situation in life: "Fatherless and motherless, the monster struggles to find his place in human society, struggles with the most fundamental questions of identity and personal history." Alone, he learns to speak, to read, and to ponder "his accursed origins." All the while, he suffers from the loneliness of never seeing anyone resembling himself". After reading Frankenstein's journal, the creature realizes he is all alone in the world. The creature does not belong to any group and has no family. It is later through the realization that the creature will never be accepted among humans that prompts him to demand a female counterpart from Victor. Without a counterpart, the creature engages in violence as a means of lashing out. The two most primal instincts for any animal are sex and vengeance. If one cannot be fulfilled, the other must. As we see throughout the novel, the creature continues to lash out against Victor and human society because he is not accepted by humanity and has no other means of satisfying his belonging needs that he so desires.
Jenna Corfman

“Loneliness and the feelings of being unwanted is the most terrible poverty” Mother Teresa. In Mary Shelley’s novel Frankenstein we see the recurring theme of the dangers of isolation. We see this through out our two main charters Victor and his creation. We see the manifestation of Victor's isolation while he is at Ingolstadt. His lack of visitors and letters from his family. His professor disapproves of his education, and this pushes Victor further away. During this period we see Victor grow depressed, and gain the strange fascination with death. These feelings lead to his creation of the monster. He quotes, "I threw myself into the chaise that was to convey me away and indulged in the most melancholy reflections. I, who had ever been surrounded by amiable companions, continually engaged in endeavoring to bestow mutual pleasure-I was now alone. In the university whither I was going I must form my own friends and be my own protector." Victor Frankenstein. The creatures isolation last his entire life span unlike Victors. The creature was left from “birth” he had to fend for himself and teach himself, but we see his isolation develop while he was living by the De Lacey's cottage. During this period he begins questioning himself. He feels as if no one will ever accept him, and he feels that no one will ever understand him. He watches the De Laceys, but only once did he try to interact with them. He also goes into the swallowing hole of self pity and begins questioning himself and begins to feel as if he was a disappointment to his creator. This self pity consumes and turns into anger, that is why he kills. He is angry and fears isolation. We see his self pity in this quote “ God, in pity, made man beautiful and alluring, after his own image; but my form is a filthy type of yours, more horrid even from the very resemblance.Satan had his companions, fellow-devils, to admire and encourage him, but i am solitary and abhorred” the creature. These two characters show the strongest definition of Mary Shelley’s theme, Isolation is dangerous. Both characters become engulfed with isolation but they take it out in different ways. Victor creates a creature from death while the monster kills.

Edited by Joelle Wurm

According to Mary Shelley's novel ‘Victor Frankenstein’ she expresses throughout the novel that the characters she has chosen gets affected by nature in many ways. Mary Shelley creates a character that has no name but is created by Victor Frankenstein; the monster. The monster was isolated and was always put down by humanity no matter what he would try to do. There were many times that the monster was upset with humanity he would take a walk through nature and hear the sounds of the wind and water to calm down. Every time the monster would be upset or overwhelmed he would go somewhere in nature to calm down. As Mary Shelley describes the monster she states, “Even broken in spirit as he is, no one can feel more deeply than he does the beauties of nature”. This quote from Mary Shelley's is persuading her audience to understand that nature is a very warming and calming place that can cure feelings and emotions that some cannot describe.

- Stephanie Moore (Peer Critique)

How would you feel if everything you had ever created has been copied by somebody else? That is the idea that Mary Shelley tried to convince her audience that had read Frankenstein. She identified how life creation should only be developed by the eyes of god. What this means is victor created a creature ( acting like god, trying to pursuit in the creation of life) to fulfill the life of many, making life extended. He creates life to destroy life. Thais a reason on why the motif is death. it was repeated throughout the story even before the creature was created. Starting with Caroline. Death plays a major effect because it affects the storys feeling and how it makes a hand in hand connection on how the characters are effected. Overall Mary Shelley created Frankenstein to tell us the pressure and effects of life, and how we can not be the reason for creation.

It is true that you shouldn’t do something just because you can. In Mary Shelley's Frankenstein, Victor Frankenstein attempts to play God. He does this by creating the monster. This is something that he knows he shouldn’t do and is warned not to, yet he does it anyway. This is what leads to his downfall. When he creates the monster it worships Victor, until it finds out what Victor really thinks of him. So the monster kills Victor’s family members, directly and indirectly. The monster destroys everything victor loves. Victor in a way is the modern Prometheus. Prometheus gave man the knowledge of fire, in Greek Mythology. However man wasn’t meant to have this knowledge. So the Gods punished him for his actions. IN Frankenstein, Victor discovers how to create life and plays God by making the monster and giving it life. Due to this Victor’s life in brought down to the ground. Everyone he loves is gone and there is nothing left of him except for his rage. All he has left to do is seek revenge on his creation for doing this to him, however this is his own fault. If Victor and Prometheus would both have not committed their actions, problems would not exist. If Victor wouldn’t have tried to play God he would still have his family, but he does try to play God. So that is why Victor’s life is ruined and he dies in the Arctic angry and unsatisfied.

When Mary Shelley wrote Frankenstein she did a magnificent job with symbolism. There also themes behind the book like for instance society and how cruel it can be. Light is one of the symbols like when Victor said “ A new light seemed to down upon my mind”. This is when he discovered the secret to creating life. Then another symbol would be the the bible because they compare the the monster to Adam but also compare him to Satan. Then another example would be Victor trying to play God and creating life.

Revenge is a dish best served cold. The theme of revenge is a recurring theme throughout Mary Shelley’s book, Frankenstein. A theme in this book is revenge is a consequence of hate. In the story, the creature attempts to get revenge on those who used hatred against him due to his hideous appearance. There are two pieces of evidence from the story on how the monster was abandoned, mistreated, and lied to by Victor Frankenstein, his creator, and others. In the first action of hate against the monster, it was not intentional. Frankenstein stated, “I trembled excessively; I could not endure to think of, and far less allude to, the occurences of the preceding night.” This quote shows how afraid Victor was of his creation and how he fled his lab where the monster was. Although this was not an intentional act on Victor’s part, this was the first experience the monster had with abandonment. The second piece of evidence stated by Frankenstein was, “I feared the vengeance of the disappointed fiend, yet I was unable to overcome my repugnance to the task which was enjoined me.” Frankenstein means that although he intended to create a companion, he was afraid of all the damage they could do together or if she would even listen to the other monster. The monster then threatened Victor he would be with him on his wedding night, where he murdered Elizabeth. Finally, the monster said, “I longed to join them, but I darned not. I remembered too well the treatment I had suffered the night before from the barbarous villagers.” He is stating how he is afraid of the negative experiences with the villagers, but he wants to join the family due to all the love they show for each other. He approaches and has a conversation with Mr. DeLacey, the blind old man, but when Felix and Agatha get home they chase him away due to his appearance. He then feels a victim of abandonment once again which causes him to flee to Geneva looking for Victor. This event also led to the death of Victor’s youngest brother William when he was murdered by the monster. In conclusion, revenge is not the best way to solve your problems. Victor and the creature both used revenge against one another due to the hate they have towards each other.

The pursuit of dangerous knowledge resembles so much of what Mary Shelley put in Frankenstein. Victor Frankenstein wanted to take over his professors soon to be creation and recreate life. With the brain of his professor inside this creation Victor thought that the creature would be intelligent and be very thankful for the life that Victor gave him. Victor will soon regret giving the monster life, because the monster kills everyone close to Victor. It seems as if recreating life has its consequences and these are the prices Victor has to pay. Throughout the novel William, Henry, and Elizabeth were killed by the monster, they were very special to Victor. The monster just wanted to be accepted into the world but his creator didn't even want him, so his first emotion was anger and that resulted in many deaths. Dangerous knowledge can be very powerful and it can lead to many things, including death.

Revenge can really become the “dearer than light or food,” as Mary Shelley states in the novel. Throughout the novel Mary Shelley really nails the point of revenge as it becomes a common theme in the book Frankenstein, as the monster seeks revenge on the people who are not willing to accept him. The monster realizes what he look like and how it may be scaring people away causing him to not be accepted in with humanity. The monster has been hurt by the unfair rejection of humanity that he cannot see past its own prejudices and in turn wants to hurt those who hurt it. All the monster wants is to be accepted and someone to love and care for him. When he realizes that no one is accepting him and nothing on the world is ever going to love and care for him, he seeks revenge. At first, the murders are not on purpose but as humanity does not accept him more and more it makes him want to take on revenge towards people who have mistreated him. This causes the monster to seek revenge within everything and as Mary Shelley used in the book make revenge “dearer than light or food.”

Megan Huffman

The monster ends up turning on him and kills his brother William and the love of his life Elizabeth on the night before their wedding. Appearance vs. Reality plays a big part in this play. The monster didn’t realize what he was doing wrong and why everyone was scared of him. You can’t recreate a human! The monster is a great example of why you wouldn’t want to do something like that. It’s not worth it in the end.

The fear of isolation kills. Just ask Victor Frankenstein and his Creature in Mary Shelley's novel "Frankenstein". Victor, driven insane by watching his family slowly being killed off making him alone. That fear, drove him crazy and led to his demise. Likewise, The Creature was rejected by all of humanity and left alone wandering, looking for a friend. The emotional stress of being rejected and not being able to be around anyone was driving him crazy, which he then turned into rage. This caused a clash between the two, both the igniters for each others hatred. Victor creates The Creature and doesn’t take the responsibility of teaching him how to live. Maybe fixing him up so he isn’t so hideous. Instead he is selfish and runs away. However The Creature then takes revenge once he realizes he isn’t loved, and begins to kill Victor's family if he doesn’t do his commands.

Nature plays a major role in the novel Frankenstein. Not only does it seem to restore and affect the characters’ moods. The association of nature and human feeling shows how Shelley prefers to use metaphor of a natural setting rather than other descriptions. Nature acted as a restorative agent for Victor’s health and his spirits. When he was sick, he was not completely healed until he breathed the fresh air. Nature, however, did punish him when he tried to obey its rules. When Victor tried to create life in his own terms nature gave him a monster. On top of making a creature, he neglected it, so nature further punished him by having the creature turn into his downfall as well as the downfall of all the people he loved. Shelley probably chose this theme due to the loss of her baby. No matter how bad she wanted to bring it back, she could not because that is how nature works and it should not be messed with.

Callie Rife

Being curious is okay, but being too curious could lead to a serious amount of danger. If anything, Victor Frankenstein is the one to ask for the knowledge. The pursuit of secrets lurk within the novel of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein; or The Modern Prometheus, Victor learns that he keeps many secrets from his family and friends about a dangerous creation that has been made by his own hands. Keeping something dangerous a secret is no laughing matter. The entire obsession with creating a living being with chemistry and natural philosophy has shrouded in secrecy. After creating and regretting his obsession with destroying his creation remains equally secret until Walton hears his tale. Now aware, Victor has brought an unnatural being into the world. The monster does not know what he is. A creature that does not know its ability given by nature is a disaster waiting to happen. Along with realizing what he had done, Victor continues in his secrecy out of shame and guilt, and the monster is forced into seclusion by his grotesque appearance. In confessing all before he dies, he escapes the stifling secrecy that has ruined his life. The hatred to being secretive, it is important to know that secrets can be destructive. Even also, the thirst for knowledge can be very destructive, no matter the cost.
Morgan Gassner

Shelley probably chose this theme ue to the loss of her baby. No matter how bad she wanted to bring it back, she could not because that is how nature works and it should not be messed with.

This makes the monster hostile and afraid because of people thinking he is ugly and not a normal human. The problem with this is that it is extremely illegal and is something that should not be done. Once Victor creates the monster he flees his lab out of fear. This is now a big problem, because the monster gets out and cannot be found. Victor does not tell anyone about what he has done because he believes that no one will believe him and not take him seriously.

Jared Holmer

Isolation is said to drive you mad, look at what it did to Victor Frankenstein and his monster. Mary Shelley's Novel Frankenstein shows how isolation can cause living beings to go insane and that Isolation is the actual root of all evil. The monster was the first to experience what it’s like to be abandoned and isolated from society, and when he would try to interact he was attacked do to his appearance. Do to isolation he sought a companion and would go to ends meet to get that showing that isolation made him go mad, and toward the end he seeks forgiveness for he knows what he did was wrong. Another time isolation played a role was when Victor assumed the monster would attack him, not realizing that the monster wanted revenge by subjecting him to the same horror as him by killing Elizabeth and leaving him alone with no one left, this caused him to fall into a vengeful madness for the rest of his life. From that night on Victor threw his life away to try and catch his Monster and end him out of revenge. Both the monster and Victor experienced times of isolation that changed them with the creature it made him kill people in the hope he could get what he wanted most and that was another companion. For Victor when he was alone like at college he created a monster and didn’t think of possible consequences, and by the time he finally did tell someone about his monster it was to late and he was alone in trying to kill the monster he made till the day he died. This all shows that when beings are left to isolation it can cause them to make grave mistakes.
Edited by Joelle Wurm

Society can stab you in the back. When Mary Shelley wrote Frankenstein, she did a magnificent job with using symbolism to show this. One of the themes behind the book is society and how cruel it can be. Light is one of the symbols. Similar to when Victor said, “ A new light seemed to down upon my mind”. This is when he discovered the secret to creating life. Then another symbol would be the the bible because, they compare the the monster to Adam but also compare him to Satan. Then another example would be Victor trying to play God and creating life.
Tyler Stephens
m

Austin French

Have you ever heard the saying to never judge a book by its cover? In Mary Shelley’s book Frankenstein this is portrayed through the theme of beauty being important to people. In this book, the monster that Victor created is very ugly, and because of this nobody would accept him, love him, or even talk to him. Throughout the novel there was several times where the monster realized that beauty is important to people. In the book, the monster watches the Delacey family. While watching this family for some time, he starts to see how they love each other and appreciate beauty. A girl named Safie lives with the Delacey family, and everyone loves Safie because of how beautiful she is. And when the monster tries to talk to the Delacey family he gets beat by Felix. The monster sees the difference on the way he is treated versus Safie. Seeing the difference on how he is treated compared to Safie shows him that beauty is important to people. They love and accept Safie, but they beat him and won't even talk to him because of how ugly he is. The only person who would talk to him was Delacey himself, but he was blind. The monster realizes the only reason that Delacey will talk to him is because he can't see him. But he knows if the man wasn't blind he wouldn't talk to him. Through this, the monster sees how people are treated differently based on how they look.

Justin Leis

(Theme) Nature cures all

Nature cures the soul in many ways. In Mary Shelley’s novel one of her characters, Victor Frankenstein goes on many adventures throughout nature to get away from a lot of the conflict between characters and himself. As the no name monster starts to kill everyone Victor Frankenstein loves, Victor starts to go into depression. Alphonse (Victor's Father) wants nothing more than Victor and Elizabeth to get married, but Victor has his mind elsewhere. He tells his father he wishes to go to London to study. Both Henry Clerval and Victor journey up the Rhine River to the North Sea. Mary Shelley mentions the places along the way that are important to her like the vineyards, the cliffs, the islands in the river, and the ordinary people who carry on their lives on such a beautiful land. So when Victor and Henry was sailing down the river he got to see the beauty of nature; the wonderful colors and smells. He also loved how happy Henry was, and how Henry always had a smile on his face. While Victor sat there on that boat, looking at the beautiful scenery. Looking at Henry; he forgot his worries and fears. Victor sat there and smiled his depression slowly disappear for awhile. Ashlee Stiefel

The idea for the novel Frankenstein actually came to Mary Shelley through a very vivid dream of a man creating a hideous being, and it came alive. This “waking dream”, as she called it, served as the driving force of her novel which she began writing the next day. However, the man who committed such an atrocious and sacrilegious act could not go unpunished. Throughout the novel, this man named Victor Frankenstein is tormented as a result of his creation, because man should not play god. Mary Shelley makes this theme clear through the drastic consequences of Victor’s actions. Part of what can be viewed as his punishment comes in the form of deaths. Deaths are a motif of the story, which represent the ending of certain values within Victor’s life. For example, William’s death in chapter 7 represents the end of innocence. It shows that Victor has forever tainted his life, and the death of Justine represents the end of justice and fairness, because she was framed and falsely convicted. In chapter 9, Elizabeth expresses this feeling, saying “Before, I looked upon the accounts of vice and injustice that I read in books or heard from others as tales of ancient days or imaginary evils; at least they were remote and more familiar to reason than to the imagination; but now misery has come home.” Victor seeks refuge from his consequences through nature, which is another motif of the story. Mary Shelley portrays nature as being beautiful, peaceful, and exotic in comparison to Victor’s miserable and chaotic life. After the death of his beloved Justine and William, he takes a trip, and along his journey he describes Mont Blanc. “Mont Blanc, the supreme and magnificent Mont Blanc, raised itself from the surrounding aiguilles, and its tremendous dome overlooked the valley.” In this description, he shows the immense beauty of nature that is carried throughout the rest of the novel. However, nature is only a distraction from his problems, which were caused by him playing god. Mary Shelley makes it clear that those who play god will be punished for it, through death and distress. Although nature may provide them happiness, they must still face their consequences. Victor understood this very well, but only after it was too late and his creation was unleashed upon the world.

Max Webb

How would you feel if everything you had ever created has been copied by somebody else? That is the idea that Mary Shelley tried to convince her audience whom had read Frankenstein. She identified how creation of life should only be developed by the eyes of god. Which means Victor created a creature (acting like god, trying to pursuit in the creation of life) to fulfill the life of many, making life extended. He creates life to destroy life, which is a reason why the motif is death. it was repeated throughout the story even before the creature was created. Starting with Caroline, death plays a major effect because it affects the storys feeling and how it makes a hand in hand connection on how the characters are effected. Overall Mary Shelley created Frankenstein to tell us the pressure and effects of life, and how we can not be the reason for creation.

Edited by:Skyler Wise

Knowledge can be a very dangerous weapon that can cut even its wielder. Robert Walton and Victor Frankenstein is proof of this dangerous knowledge in the book Frankenstein, written by Mary Shelley. Dangers of Knowledge is a great theme because in the story it shows multiple times that knowledge was gained or trying to be gained. Knowledge brought pain and misery to multiple people throughout the story. For example,Robert tries to find the passage to the North pole while Victor attempts and succeeds to create life. But the result caused Roberts ships and crew to get stuck in the ice while Victor suffers the damage the creature has caused. Frankenstein is saying “Having too much knowledge can end up being humanity’s greatest downfall for the ones who seek it and is greedy and will stop at nothing to get it.” Victor and Robert are great examples for they both push and drive themselves to go through anything possible to get the knowledge they seek. Victor’s result of that is his knowledge of creating life had brought a life form of destruction, pain, and misery. While Roberts result is being stuck in sheets of ice. Victor tries to hunt his disaster and ends up freezing and starving. Robert is trying to survive from the ice freezing and starving trying to free himself and his crew from the ice.Victor and Robert are perfect examples of how deadly knowledge is if used unwisely and destructively.

Edited By: Dustin Austin

Justin Leis In the Mary Shelley's book, Frankenstein, the creature that Victor made was upset with the way he was treated because of the way he looked. Victor didn't love the monster because he was ugly and different, causing the monster to feel alone and helpless. The creature is upset that Victor left him because of the way he looks even though he can't change the way he looks. After the creature is abandon he goes on a killing spree to try to get Victor to make him a companion. Victor is afraid that if he makes another creature the two creatures will take over the world and destroy everything. The whole story the creature is pushed away because he is different, but all the creature wants to do is be accepted for the way he is. Anthony Bihary

The soothing and comforting features of nature revitalize the characters in Frankenstein. This romantic like theme is throughout most of the book as the monster and Victor go back to nature for comfort.

"About this time we retired to our house at Belrive. This change was particularly agreeable to me. The shutting of the gates regularly at ten o'clock, and the impossibility of remaining on the lake after that hour, had rendered our residence within the walls of Geneva very irksome to me. I was now free. Often, after the rest of the family had retired for the night, I took the boat, and passed many hours upon the water" (62) There is a sense of responsibility in creating something important like life. Victor like a parent births the monster then fail in taking responsibility for his “kid” Victor did not realize his actions have consequences. Victor fails his duty to take care and teach creature right from wrong. Because of this the creature gets made fun of and picked on then unleashes hate on his creator's family. The creature gets revenge on Victor and takes away everything “that” Victor ever loved and had.
