Hutus consisted the majority of the population and the Tutsis were the ones that owned cattle. The colonization of the Belgium was the main cause of this conflict as the system put tension between the two ethnic groups. The groups were living in peace for hundreds of years. Also, Belgium set up a Hutu-run government in Rwanda. Tutsis were regarded as cockroaches by Hutus. This caused the discrimination against the Tutsis in Rwanda which ultimately grew their hatred against the system. Before independence tutsis were favored as they closer in appearance to Europeans. Tutsis received better education and were favored. The organization was done by the radio stations that expressed their hatred. Hutu power elites armed Interahamwe with machetes were trained to protect villages and to exterminate any tutsi on sight. Weapons were delivered and planned well.
