전형적인 석회암 동굴로 ‘다층구조’를 이루고 있다.고씨동굴은 무려 4~5억 년 전에 만들어졌는데, 동굴 안에는 고드름처럼 생긴 신비한 종유석과 땅에서 올라온 석순이 장관을 이룬다.

고씨동굴에는 동굴 속에서만 살아가는 희귀한 생물들이 많이 서식하고 있다. 그래서 고씨동굴을 천연기념물로 지정하여 보호하고 있다.
