         <title>Padlet #1: Dissociative Identity Disorder: Cartoon</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>This cartoon depicts several people talking in a room with a sign that says “Multiple Personality Support Group Meets Here” (Schwadron, n.d.). All of the people in the room have multiple name tags on, such as one woman whose name tags say Barb, Sue, and Jan (Schwadron, n.d.). While the sign uses the antiquated name of multiple personality disorder, it is attempting to depict what is now known as dissociative identity disorder. This cartoon meets diagnostic Criteria A of dissociative identity disorder, which explains the concept of possessing “two or more distinct personality states” (APA, 2013, p. 292). This is exemplified by the multiple name tags that each individual is wearing (Schwadron, n.d.). However, it is does not provide enough information to fully meet Criterion A, which states that the multiple personalities “involves marked discontinuity in sense of self and sense of agency, accompanied by related alterations in affect, behavior, consciousness, memory perception, cognition, and/or sensory-motor functioning” (APA, 2013, p. 292). It is implied that Criterion  C, which is significant distress or impairment in areas of life, is met because the people are meeting at a support group. Furthermore, Criterion  D, which indicates that this is not normal, cultural or religious practice, is implied to be met because the individuals are in a support group, and it is older, Western people who would not stereotypically have cultural practices of having multiple personalities. However, there are several criteria that are not addressed whatsoever. For example, Criterion  B which states, “recurrent gaps in the recall of everyday events, important personal information, and/or traumatic events that are inconsistent with ordinary forgetting,” is not mentioned or implied to whatsoever in this cartoon (APA, 2013, p. 292). Furthermore, there is no indication of what caused the behavior, so there is no consideration of Criterion E, which states that the dissociative identity symptoms must not be due to substance abuse or medical conditions (APA, 2013). </div><div>            This cartoon does not accurately depict the mental illness of dissociative identity disorder. Rather, it only exemplifies that these individuals identify with multiple personalities and that they are in a support system together (Schwadron, n.d.). This cartoon attempts to simplify a rather complex disorder. Furthermore, with all of the nametags being on the individual at once, this cartoon implies that the individual has all the personalities exhibited at once. In reality, an individual with dissociative identity disorder has “sudden discontinuities in speech, affect, and behavior” (APA, 2013, p. 293). This is much more consistent with personalities changing one at a time, rather than all existing at once. Furthermore, this cartoon does not depict the confusion or distress than an individual with dissociative identity disorder often has (APA, 2013). Instead, this cartoon depicts all the individuals as very happy in their support group.</div><div>            This cartoon supports many stereotypes about dissociative identity disorder. Often dissociative identity disorder is conceptualized as simply an individual having multiple personalities, but not much more is known about it. This cartoon does exactly that. It only focuses on the pervasive criteria of dissociative identity disorder, and implies or ignores the rest. This is not an accurate representation of the disease, and furthers negative stereotypes about individuals with dissociative identity disorder being very odd. While support groups do not necessarily denote negative behavior, the fact that all of these individuals are in a support group could indicate an oddity about them and separation from the rest of the population. Furthermore, it only represents the possessive type of dissociative identity disorder, there are also people with dissociative identity disorder that are non-possessive type, where different personalities are not blatantly displayed (APA, 2013). This cartoon completely ignores that population of people with dissociative identity disorder, and further promotes the stereotype of only one type of dissociative identity disorder, causing the public to associate only one type and be ignorant of the non-possessive type. </div>]]></description>
