The sit-ins were some of the first black power movement demonstrations in Seattle. June 6th 1968, Aaron Dixon, the Captain of the Seattle chapter of the Black Panthers advocated for a change of the jury for the trial of the sit-in participants.

Realtors and bankers had redlined the neighborhood and discriminated against nonwhites following Brown v. Board of Education.

"The Peaceable Kingdom" was commissioned in 1984 at the Madrona Playfield. "The [aluminum] sculpture features a sheep, panther, pig, and wolf all getting along. The pig represents the police, the panther the Black Panthers, the wolf aggressive agitators, and the sheep meek followers.
The piece serves as a symbol of Madrona’s diversity and the community’s ability to live together without challenge or tension."
