"Math facts by themselves are a small part of mathematics, and they are best learned through the use of numbers in different ways and situations. Unfortunately, many classrooms focus on math facts in isolation, giving students the impression that math facts are the essence of mathematics, even worse, that mastering the fast recall of math facts is what it means to be a strong math student."

-Is it important for students to have math facts memorized? Explain.
What can we do at CHE to strengthen the fact fluency of our students without repetition as the main form of practice?

I do believe it is important to know your basic math facts as a cornerstone and building block for future usage. It is used as a mechanism to get to other areas in mathematics. Basic math facts are used all throughout 4th/5th grade math and need to be known for continued success. It will also hopefully al In the past we have used Kim Sutton and looking at different rules that could be used for different multiples (Example 9's)

I too think that students should have a certain level of automaticity with basic math facts. This understanding of number patterns helps students to have success with more difficult conceptual skills. To strengthen fact fluency, I think we need to present the students with a large variety of activities that allow them to explore these number strategies and patterns in different ways.

I think one way to help change the mindset of "mastering the fast recall of math facts is what it means to be a strong math student" is to remove Fact Fluency from the grade card. Especially because it is a specific grade on the grade card.

I think students need to have a basic handle on math facts. Incorporating some games and reasons why we need to know our facts can encourage kids to learn them. Strategies are just as important as the facts themselves. 10-Block has some good practice games to support learning facts.

We have been discussing the phrase "fact fluency" on our grade card lately. If there is not a specific way the district wants us to assess this, it's very confusing to parents. The mindset has to change.
