Literally. Heimaey grew about 20% larger because of this eruption. Even though the citizens of this island had to evacuate and many people lost their homes, there was only one casualty. After the eruption stopped the islanders quickly went to work with great ideas. One of the major ones was that they used the volcano's heat to generate geothermal energy which would provide a clean and reliable energy source for the island.
