The event of Selma to Montgomery march was one of the civil-rights protests that occurred in 1965 and was able to shine light on the difficulties that black voters faced and the need for a national Voting Rights Act. The march was led by Martin Luther King Jr. from Selma to the state capital of Montgomery, attempting to register black voters in the South. Protesters under the protection of federalized National Guard troops marched a 54-mile route and encountered a lot of deadly violence from white vigilante groups and local authorities. However, after marching for three days to reach Montgomery, the protesters reached their goal.

One of the many reasons why the Selma March to Montgomery even occurred was because the 15th amendment, which states that, "the right of citizens of the US to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the US or by any state on account of race, color, or previous condition of servitude," was being violated. The march was how the people whose rights were being violated fought to protect their right to vote, as well as their other rights.
