Group project: Percussion Ensemble

1. Rhythm
Describe how you have demonstrated your ability to create rhythm using Percussion Instruments/other obejcts.

As a group, we will first come up with a speed that we sustain at for the whole section. We had a structure, and each group created several samples of rhythmic motif and incorporate the rhythmic motif into the structure. The structure consisted of introduction, layering, call and answer and finale. So I attempted to play and come up with different new rhythms by myself. I would try different patterns to play, to create something completely new. Then we had to experiment to play together to see if the motif we created complimented each other. If we heard that something was out of place, we would try to find out what it was and try to tweak the motif so that it fits with the rest. We also had to build up the texture and call and response. We wanted to play something different for call and response, where the call and response are different, so that it will be more unique. We also focused on contrast in texture, dynamics and tempo.

2. Melody
Explain how your understanding of the use of scales has helped you to create Melody.

The understanding of use of scales helped me a lot as I knew the notes needed for the chords and was clear of what notes I was supposed to play in order for my melody to complement with the rest of the group. And avoided any unnecessary confusion of what notes to play.

3. Chords
Explain how your understanding of the use of chords has help you to create accompaniment and melody.

I used the notes in the chords to create new accompaniment and melody. The chords could be organised and played in many different patterns. So I experimented with many different patterns to see which suited my liking and could easily be incorporated and complemented into others' rhythmic motifs. As I wanted to be more adventurous, I tried harder and slightly more complicated rhythms for the chords. So understanding the use of chords made it easier for me to create more complicated rhythms.

Insert video of your the most creative bicentennial souvenir here and answer the following questions:

1. Explain why it is the most creative. What can you say about the form (how it looks)? What can you say about the function (how the mechanisms work)? In what ways are the form and/or function creative?
- It looks very neat and tidy, the workmanship was well done, although it didn't work, but the idea was Sang Nila Utama sliding down into the box, weighing the box down, causing the other side of the pulley. to move upwards, pulling Stamford Raffles upwards and Lee Kuan Yew to move downwards into the box, causing the paper roll to unroll. I feel that it makes use of different mechanisms and I liked the part where the paper roll unrolls to reveal the words ' Singapore Bicentennial 2019 ', which was very creative.
2. What can you learn from it? What elements can be applied to your own bicentennial souvenir?
- I can learn about thinking of different ways to include more key characters that played a part in Singapore's growth, and not being too ambitious as we couldn't finish it in the end. In terms of aesthetics, ours wasn't very nice so I think that is a point that we can definitely improve on, to make it more colourful.

My Reflection:
- Aspects that I feel I had done well: I feel that . I had done well in editing in the rooftop garden to my picture, although I took quite some time to edit in the plants, to create the "rooftop garden" kind of effect, the result turned out pretty well and I am satisfied with it. :)
- My feedback about digital drawing/collaging..: Personally, I find digital drawing harder to work with as drawing using my mousepad is definitely not easy and will not be too precise, which results in the drawing not turning out as expected. While I myself have tried collaging before and I think that it isn't as hard as digital drawing. It may take me some time to collage it as I have to repetitively draw and erase and even undo when I lose control and make mistakes, but I enjoy doing it as it creates a special effect and after seeing the end result, all the hard work pays off.

My Reflection:
- 1 new thing you had learnt today: The different types of shots:
- establishing shot - to 'set the stage'
- close up shot - to show a character's emotions clearly/ to highlight a particular object or importance in narration
- medium shot - a camera shot taken from mid body
- 2 shot - a shot with 2 characters
- point of view shot - established by being positioned between a shot of a character looking at something, and a shot showing the character's reaction
- aerial shot - gives viewers a deeper understanding of what is happening below, both literally and metaphorically
- 1 thing that you want to know more about: Are there any other special types of shots that are only used in special circumstances?

My Reflection:
1 new thing I have seen today from others' works: I really liked one group's artwork, where they put in speech bubbles and put the words in one by one, it was very attractive and appealing to me and also the background city buildings of theirs were painted really beautifully.
Feelings: I feel very proud and happy that we have managed to complete our project, it may not have been the best, but we put in lots of time and effort into it, from recreating an original character, to setting the backdrop and moving the waters to create movement. I really enjoyed this module as it really taught me many things, such as different color schemes, different types of shots, different ways to do a watercolour wash and creating a stop motion video. Really thankful to be able to be exposed to all these new concepts.

1. One thing that really excited me was using the Microbit and being able to do hands-on during DNT in the DNT lab, creating works of our own. (DNT)
2. Some of the things I can design is games I play using Microbit, building Goldberg machines using the mechanisms and skills we have learnt in DNT, instead of buying one. I would use the Design Thinking Process by prototyping and testing out the Microbit after coding, as it may not work the first time and takes tremendous effort to re-look at the code and find out where it went wrong. I can also ideate how I would want to do it before trying it out.
3. I would use what I have learnt to fix things around me and help others solve problems that may cause them inconvenience such as broken things. And I would also help others by trying to make things that may be difficult to do automated. As well as art and music for entertainment of others.
