I am Nur Asyura binti Ali, and I am starting my practicum as a teacher at Sekolah Kebangsaan Wangsa Maju Seksyen 2. Weekly journal uploads will occur for 14 weeks, and I hope the reader (you) will enjoy reading about my experiences in my school.

During my first week at SK Wangsa Maju Seksyen 2, my main duty was to watch the school's surroundings. My mentor that will be supervising and mentoring me in teaching English in school is Teacher Noraffiza. I am tasked to take over two of her classes which are 6 UPM and 5 UKM for the whole duration of my practicum. I learnt a lot, even though it was just the first week, including where most of the facilities and classes were. I got to know a few of the students when I replaced in for a teacher who was absent from the classroom.

I began attending my classes, 6 UPM and 5 UKM, after a week of observation. I spent the first week of class with ice-breaking activities with my students since I wanted to get to know them better and assess their English language proficiency. Through interactive talks, these exercises were intended to help them converse in English comfortably. I saw that they understood the language as a whole. Using this method enabled me to assess their English language competency.

Since I've just recently begun teaching English classes with 6 UPM, I can currently assess my strengths and weaknesses in that regard. My ability to engage with pupils and my complete command of the content I teach them make me a strong teacher. I have prepared a lot of material in advance. My current area of weakness is that, even after 30 minutes of instruction, I am unable to get the class's attention again, which may be a result of their low level of engagement. I'll attempt to use some more inventive teaching strategies, and my mentor told me to be firmer in the classroom so that the pupils could concentrate with me during class time.

My Strengths:

Engagement and Command of Content: Your ability to engage with students and have a complete command of the content you teach reflects strength in communication and subject matter expertise.

Preparation: The fact that you have prepared a lot of material in advance shows proactive planning and organization.

Interactive Teaching: Incorporating ice-breaking activities and interactive talks demonstrates an effort to make the learning environment comfortable and assess students' language proficiency effectively.

My Weaknesses:

Maintaining Classroom Attention: Difficulty in regaining the class's attention after 30 minutes indicates a challenge in sustaining engagement and may suggest the need for varied teaching strategies.

My solution:

Firm Classroom Management

I have to follow my mentor's advice and implement firmer classroom management techniques. Establish clear expectations for behavior and ensure consistency in enforcing them.

This week is like last week. in the morning there is sports training and noon PdPc as usual, while evening training cheerleader. On Tuesday I went to a meeting where there was a program for year 6 which was camping. The camp is not held in Kuala Lumpur but in Melaka. We practical teachers are obliged to join this camping and sleep there. The program will run for 2 days and 1 night.

In the meeting, I was chosen to be the Head of Activities for the students who participated in the camping. I have to provide some activities for the students as long as they are at the camping. At the first time, I was quite surprised and scared because could I think of an activity that was interesting and suitable for them? How many activities should I do for them?

When I heard the camping date started on October 28, 2023 which falls on Saturday until October 29, 2023 on Sunday so I felt I had plenty of time to think about activities for the students. To your knowledge, the camping that the school will conduct is replaced by a "benchmark visit of Malacca". I was informed that the school was unable to make a visit to the benchmark because it was a holiday, so they exchanged it by camping at the masking.

On Tuesday, our mentor held a special meeting for practical teachers about updating our files.

This week is also the anti-drug week where it is involved with all students at the school, will be involved in the activities to be carried out. I was instructed to take care of the 6 UPM where they had to draw posters about anti-drugs. At the same time, I also helped them to prepare their posters.

My strength: Multi-tasking and Time Management

My ability to juggle morning sports training, noon PdPc, and evening cheerleader training demonstrates good time management and organizational skills.

My weakness: Initial Concerns about Activity Planning

Feeling surprised and scared initially about planning interesting and suitable activities for the camping program suggests a potential insecurity or lack of confidence in event planning.

My solution: Seek Support and Guidance

Don't hesitate to seek support or advice from experienced colleagues or mentors regarding activity planning. They may offer valuable insights and resources to make the process smoother. This solution help me!

This week, the week is a bit busy because it's the end of the month because the beginning of the school sports day, I'm still going to continue cheerleader training and I'm proud that the cheerleader group has memorized the dance beats for 3 songs. In this week, I've got a weekly task group of teachers at this school. I was included in group 3 with my mentor, Mrs. Affiza.

This task group will be on duty according to the group. For example, this week is a group one on duty, a group one teacher teacher who will carry out tasks such as controlling students in the hall, guarding the school's outer gates and managing problematic student matters. Every Monday, the official assembly, the teachers on duty will give a briefing on the last weekly to the students.

This week also PdPc was heavily postponed due to the fact that year 6 pupils were carried out. They got some activity to such as cook and selling the food. I'm a little worried because they haven't been in a new topic and are lagging behind a lot. This is because, when I teach, they have a program to join. But I'm trying to teach them if I get their class relief. That's my way of not wasting time.

For your information, 6 UPM and 5 UKM, these guys are a little naughty but when I enter the fourth week, I see a change in those who are getting more disciplined and hardworking to do schoolwork. I hope they will continue this attitude until they finish school.

My strength: Responsibility in Weekly Task Group

Being included in the weekly task group with my mentor, Mrs. Affiza, suggests a recognition of your competence and responsibility within the school community.

My weakness: Concerns about Lagging Students

My worry about Year 6 pupils lagging behind due to program involvement suggests a potential challenge in balancing teaching commitments and external activities.

My solution: Effective Time Management

Prioritize and plan my schedule efficiently to allocate dedicated time for regular teaching and address the needs of Year 6 pupils without relying solely on class relief.

New week and new month! Welcome to the month of October. This week is also a busy week for sports as there is only a week before the school sports day. This week I was given the task of caring for the students who entered the race and I had to teach them how to take turns to the students. All I know is, this turnaround run is a run for a group event. At first it was hard to explain to them but when I showed them how, they understood.

At the same time, my cheerleader group is training on the field. This is because I want to arrange them when they want to perform. It's quite challenging too because the pitch is very sloping and perforated. But only temporarily, because the school will solve the problem before the sports day take the place.

My strength: Commitment to Cheerleader Training

My commitment to training the cheerleader group on the field showcases dedication to ensuring their preparedness for upcoming performances.

My weakness: Dependency on School's Problem-Solving

Relying on the school to solve the field problem before the sports day might leave me in a situation where im dependent on external factors for the success of my training sessions.

My solution: Communication with School Administration

Maintain open communication with the school administration regarding the field issues.

This week is a week of duty for my group, I just need to take hygiene scores in each class to choose a clean class winner for next week. And I'm also tasked with guarding the front door to make sure no students sit outside the school grounds and take names for students who come late.

This week also is very hectic week because it's the last week of my cheerleading practice. This week's PdPc was postponed to next week, this is because many students are involved in marching practice, some are helping their teachers and I am busy with my cheerleading practice. On Wednesdays and Thursdays, this school has a full rehearsal in the school grounds. Me as the emcee of the program, sat under the tent provided. I am very grateful to sir Ridzuan who taught me throughout my time as an emcee. What I learned is in terms of making a speech script, organizing the flow of the ceremony. This experience can help me to use in the future.

The concert also continued with my cheerleader group. This time they did a rehearsal without making a mistake. It looks like they are ready to show the crowd. for your information, my cheerleader group consists of grades 1 to 3. Imagine they are still small but can memorize all their dance steps!

This week also, the cross-country program takes place. This program is done on Friday morning. Crossing the village was done outside the school, I was given the responsibility to take care of station 3 with the practical teacher which is teacher Huda. The station that we have to take care of, we need to give directions to the students to run in which direction. I was a bit worried and scared because it was done in the road area. But luckily there was a policeman who helped the school to control everything. Alhamdulillah, everything went smoothly! Gotta gets ready for Sunday! school sports day!

on Sunday, is school sports day. in the morning, I'm a bit of a mess because I have to prepare my cheerleader team like their make-up. There are students who arrive late. Alhamdulilah, luck has Huda who also helps. At 8:30 I went straight to the field to get ready to be the emcee. The ceremony had to start late because of heavy rain in the early morning. Alhamdulillah, everything went smoothly until there was a problem where we did not receive the list of winners, it was a bit chaotic because the teacher who counted the scores still did not give the winner's result, so to not waste time, I mentioned the names of the winners just looking at their position. for example, the first winner is already standing in the first row, from here, I don't use a script, I just speak without using a script. Headmaster and other teachers proud of me for acting quickly and solving problems quickly. Alhamdulilah

My strength: Public Speaking and Emceeing

Serving as the emcee for school events, demonstrating the ability to make speeches, and handling unexpected situations without a script highlight strong public speaking and adaptability skills.

My weakness: Challenges during Sports Day

The issue with the list of winners during the sports day ceremony indicates a potential reliance on external factors, such as timely result announcements, for smooth event execution.

My solution: Early Planning for Events

I have to plan and communicate with relevant parties well in advance to avoid last-minute issues during events like sports day. Ensure that necessary information, such as winner lists, is available beforehand to streamline the ceremony.

I promised my cheerleader team if they cooperated the best during sports day, I would give them a reward, where I gave them ice cream. I bought one ice cream. They thanked me for the reward given.

On Wednesday, I heard. The other practical teachers have a meeting with the headmaster, where we have a special project to do before the end of our practical. We were asked to make an English corner in the hut provided. Before we were about to carry out the project, I was selected to make a paper and had to present it to the head teacher. Alhamdulilah, my mentor, Ms. Affiza taught me how to make a paper using the correct format.

On Friday, the school held a special event called "Maulidur rasul" this program involved all Muslim students and they were dressed in baju kurung. After finishing reciting the yassin, they marched out of the school. The ceremony also continued with a talk given by DA'I Mohd Annas. The lecture given can add knowledge to all students and can raise the spirit of love for the prophet Muhammad SAW

My strengths:

Motivational Skills: My ability to motivate the cheerleader team by promising a reward and following through with giving them ice cream demonstrates effective leadership and motivation.

Adaptability: Being selected to make a paper and present it for the English corner project showcases my adaptability and willingness to take on new responsibilities.

Learning and Mentorship: Seeking guidance from my mentor, Teacher Affiza, on how to make a paper in the correct format reflects a commitment to learning and utilizing mentorship resources.

My weakness: Limited Detail on Special Project

The report provides limited information about the specific details or content of the paper for the English corner project, making it challenging to assess the depth of the contribution.

My solution: Continuous Learning

Continue to engage with mentorship and learning opportunities. Seek feedback on the presentation and paper, and identify areas for improvement. This will contribute to my ongoing development and effectiveness in future projects.

My schedule is quite tight as I am involved in the program on Saturday and Sunday that will be held in Melaka. I was given the responsibility to create a special activity for all of them involved in this camping. Before I decide on the game to be made, I'm going to have to present it to the co-curricular teacher, Ms. Hayati. I present about the flow of this game in the minutes of the meeting.

At first, I was nervous because it was the first time I would present my proposal, I was worried too if there was a teacher who didn't agree with the game I was going to do. But Alhamdulillah they agreed with the suggestion given by me. The game I'm working on is called 'Tresure Hunt' which is related to camping, so it's very suitable for the school program and the place provided. This is because, I was informed that the place we were going to sit had a big pitch. Next, I need to make a special table for the teacher who will take care of each game station to be created.

At the time of the incident, I was given a special task which is, each pupil will be assigned a group, and each group will be assigned a teacher. I will take care of a group of 7 consisting of 7 people. Next, we move to the Melaka at 10 am and get there in 1pm. At 3 p.m., I asked them to gather for a briefing on the game that was about to start, in terms of their faces, they felt excited to join the game. After that, I called the teacher on duty for each station to give a briefing on the game and how to score.

Upon completion of all the games they have completed, they are treated to the prepared food, and they are given the freedom to do activities. Until at night, that is, "Malam Kebudayaan" to be made. Each group has to perform a special performance that night. My surprise was that I had to be emcee because Sir Ridzuan had to go back to Kuala Lumpur back because his sister died, so I would take over the work of the Ridzuan teacher.

For the first time I became an emcee without using the script, Alhamdulillah I managed to speak fluently even though there was a little nervousness, but I managed to solve it. After announcing the winner, a photo session was taken, all students were asked to enter the house to sleep.

The next day, we all moved to Malacca City to go to the Malacca History Museum. Everything went well and we moved to Kuala Lumpur, and everything was safe to get to school at 7pm due to traffic jam.

My strengths:

Event Planning and Execution: Successfully planning and executing a camping program, including creating a special activity like the 'Treasure Hunt,' showcasing my organizational skills and creativity.

Effective Presentation Skills: Overcoming initial nervousness to present the 'Treasure Hunt' game proposal to co-curricular teacher, Ms. Hayati, and gaining approval demonstrates effective communication and my presentation skills.

Adaptability and Problem-Solving: Adapting to the unexpected responsibility of being the emcee during the "Malam Kebudayaan", handling nervousness, and smoothly managing the event without a script indicates adaptability and effective problem-solving.

My weakness: Dependence on a Single Emcee

The unexpected situation where I had to take over as emcee due to a teacher's absence highlights a potential weakness in contingency planning for key roles in events.

My solution: Script Preparation

While my impromptu emceeing was successful, I should consider preparing scripts for such situations to reduce nervousness and ensure a structured presentation.

After the completion of the 2-day 1 night camping in Melaka, this week is the launch week of a special program called the Palestine solidarity week 2023. As we know what is happening in Palestine, the Ministry of Education has created this programmed to promote unity, sympathy, respect and humanitarian values in each pupil. The program has taken place in the school hall, the school has released a video about the situation in the current Palestine. The pupils are crying including myself saddened by what happened in the Palestinian state now. I hope that with this program, it will bring awareness to all students.

This week of Palestinian Solidarity continues with an activity for the students where each student draws a Palestinian flag, or a picture of a picture related to Palestine. This activity is carried out during the school curriculum which is from 3 pm to 4 pm. I was given the responsibility to look after year 6 students where I had to control them in the hall. I also help give students ideas to help them complete the task.

On Friday, the school held a ceremony called Children's Day. The council would like to celebrate the children's day for the pupils of this school. The event was given the theme 'world of animal' where all students can dress in animal costumes. On the day of the incident, I had to control the pupils in the hall and choose the winner for the striking and exciting shirt for the best shirt competition. For this event, the school also held activities for all students to be able to participate, I was given the responsibility to take care of the candy station. Where all students are asked to take the candy using chopstick within 10 seconds. All the students enjoy including me!

I also have to present the prizes to the winners on stage.

All pupils are given a free banquet including door gift in conjunction with the Children's Day Gift for them. They are infused with fried macaroni and free ice cream. Everyone felt very happy. After the completion of the ceremony, I and the other teachers were busy cleaning the school board.

My strength: Event Management

Successfully managing the Children's Day event, including controlling students, organizing competitions, and presenting prizes, demonstrates event management and organizational skills.

My weakness: Potential Overwhelm

Balancing responsibilities for multiple events and activities during the week, such as the Palestine solidarity program, year 6 student activity, and Children's Day, may lead to potential overwhelm and stress.

My solution: Delegation of Tasks

When possible, I delegate tasks to other teachers or volunteers to share the workload during events. This can help me ensure a smoother execution of activities and prevent excessive stress.

The next week, it's the week that special programs are involved by year 4, 5, and 6 students. The program is managed by the Tunku Abdul Rahman university where the students need to do a recycling activity. Students are required to provide clothes that are not worn to the university and to plant trees. The program also takes place daily after the break for year 4,5 and 6 students. This caused my class to be delayed a lot. so, after a break for graders 4, 5 and 6. I have to go down to the board to join the students.

Throughout the programmed, I had to control the students and at the same time, I helped them to make the activities a success.

My strength: Leadership and Engagement

I involvement in controlling and guiding students during the recycling and tree-planting program demonstrates leadership and engagement in environmental initiatives.

My weakness: Class Schedule Disruption

The delay in my class schedule due to the daily program for year 4, 5, and 6 students suggests a potential weakness in time management and class planning.

My solution: Effective Time Management

Plan my class schedules and activities more efficiently to accommodate interruptions caused by special programs. Create a flexible timetable that allows for adjustments while ensuring essential curriculum coverage.

Happy Deepavali Day to students who celebrate! That's right, this is a festive week for my students who celebrate Deepavali. This week the school is on holiday from Monday to Tuesday. School started as usual on Wednesday. They attend 3 days of school only this week.

There is no such program running during the week, so PdPc is run as usual for 3 days. All my students are able to study diligently and understand the topics I give. I would often give notes and teach them, then they would do the training given me. To interest my students, I will do some activities in the classroom so that they focus on my classroom.

At first, it's quite difficult for me to impress them. But over time, I was able to find a way to get their attention, what they were interested in, from there I continued to use my techniques that could attract their attention.

This week I'm also a little busy with my Observation preparations next week, I need to prepare early to get everything going smoothly. Alhamdulilah, with the help of ideas from my mentor, I got an idea of how I can teach on the observation that will be made with my supervisor.

My strength: Effective Teaching Strategies

My ability to adapt and find ways to capture students' attention demonstrates effective teaching strategies.

My weakness: Initial Difficulty in Impressing Students

Facing initial difficulty in impressing students may indicate a challenge in immediately establishing a strong connection with the class.

My solution: Building Stronger Connection:

Work on building stronger connections with my students by understanding their interests and incorporating relevant content into my lessons. Create a positive and inclusive classroom environment to foster a sense of belonging.

As soon as the time passed, it was the 12th week, where I had only 2 weeks left to teach at this school. This week is also my week with my supervisor, Madam Norashikin. My observation is conducted on Tuesday, at 12:30 pm until 1:30 pm in the 6th year class of UPM. Nervous? freak out? yes, I couldn't get rid of this feeling during the Observation.

But Alhamdulilah Madam Norashikin was very Sporting and helped calm me to teach. I teach in 60 minutes and choose the title 'How is it made?'. Throughout the observation, all my students were well cooperative, I myself was able to carry out activities smoothly where I even played songs in the classroom, I divided them in group work and discussed the answers together.

After the observation was carried out, Madam norashikin commented that all the techniques of teaching me were interesting, the objective was achieved just only one, where I did not use the whiteboard in class to teach. For example, I only spoke instead of writing on the whiteboard. Madam Norashikin told me to use the materials around the class to teach my students. Insyaallah, after this I will improve again and use the idea from madam Norashikin. Alhamdulilah all goes smoothly.

My strength:

Adaptability: My ability to adapt and carry out activities smoothly during the observation demonstrates flexibility and adaptability in teaching.

Student Cooperation: The cooperative behavior of my students during the observation reflects effective classroom management and a positive teacher-student relationship.

Positive Feedback from Supervisor: Receiving positive feedback from Madam Norashikin about interesting teaching techniques indicates a strength in instructional creativity and engagement.

My weakness:

Reliance on Speaking Over Visual Aids

The feedback about not using the whiteboard and relying solely on speaking suggests a potential reliance on verbal communication without incorporating visual aids.

My solution:

Diversification of Teaching Methods

Integrate a variety of teaching methods, including visual aids, to cater to different learning styles. Incorporate materials around the class, use the whiteboard, and leverage multimedia resources to enhance the learning experience.

Time is so fast; this week is the 13th week. This week the headmaster asked us to focus on the school's project, the Highly Immersive Programme. This project needs to be done by a practical teacher before the end of our practice. After I had done the paperwork, teacher Huda and Sir Amir made the design banner and the three of us focused on painting the hut pole so that it looked more interesting.

All the materials are ready to be prepared, now just wait for the banner and the board to arrive. For your information, the objective of this project is to inculcate the interest of students, teachers and the community in English, in turn is to cultivate English at the school level.

The headmaster asked us to prepare the pole paint first. We were asked to make after the end of the teaching session at school. So, it took me two days for us to finish the paint on the pole.

My strengths:

Collaboration and Teamwork: My involvement in the Highly Immersive Programme project and collaboration with Teacher Huda and Sir Amir in making the design banner and painting the hut pole demonstrates effective teamwork.

Project Management: Successfully completing paperwork, preparing materials, and focusing on painting the hut pole reflects organizational and project management skills.

Commitment to School Objectives: My commitment to the school's objective of promoting English language interest among students, teachers, and the community shows dedication to educational goals.

My weakness: Limited Information on Project Impact

The report provides limited information about the impact of the Highly Immersive Programme project on students, teachers, and the community, making it challenging to assess the project's effectiveness.

My solution: Impact Evaluation

After the completion of the Highly Immersive Programme project, conduct an evaluation to assess its impact on English language interest among students, teachers, and the community.

Last week for me at this school! Sad? Yes.... It's been 14 weeks since I've been in this school, there's a lot of love and grief that I've had in this school. This week is also the last observation of my mentor. Once it's all done, I'm a little busy to prepare all the lesson plans and score forms. This week is also the week I will be teaching students year 6 UPM and year 5 UKM.

I already promised them to give a reward because throughout my class with them, they gave a lot of cooperation and perseverance in the classroom. I bought spaghetti carbonara for my students 5 UKM and 6 UPM. Making me feel shocked and overwhelmed, my own students made a surprise to me, where they planned each other to celebrate the last week with me.

On Thursday, my school held a farewell ceremony for practical teachers namely me, teacher huda and Sir Amir, during the ceremony, I was given the last chance to give the final message to my students and the last chance to thank the teachers. After the ceremony, many students gave me gifts, I am grateful that they were willing to spend money just to buy my gifts.

On Friday, I met the headmaster to thank him and for giving me the experience to teach students, handle students and provide facilities to me and other practical teachers and our headmaster gave us a final message that was really deep and mean to me. I hope that one day, I will be able to become a teacher like a teacher in Sekolah Kebangsaan Wangsa Maju Seksyen 2. I'm proud of myself because in 14 weeks, I've been able to face challengen and given the opportunity to experience any position I've been given.

Thank you so much Sekolah Kebangsaan Wangsa Maju Seksyen 2 !

My strengths:

Connection with Students: My ability to establish a strong connection with students, evident in their surprise celebration for my last week, reflects a strength in building meaningful relationships.

Gratitude and Appreciation: Expressing gratitude to the headmaster and teachers and acknowledging the opportunity to teach, handle students, and utilize school facilities demonstrates a positive and appreciative attitude.

Adaptability and Versatility: Successfully facing challenges and experiencing various roles within 14 weeks showcases adaptability and versatility in handling different responsibilities.

My weakness: Feeling Overwhelmed

Feeling shocked and overwhelmed by the surprise celebration and the emotions associated with saying goodbye suggests a potential challenge in managing unexpected situations or emotions.

My solution: Continued Relationship Building

Although leaving the school, consider maintaining connections with students and colleagues through professional networks or social media. This can foster ongoing relationships and support.
