A witch-hunt is when people hunt down other people who have been labeled witches or a search for evidence of witchcraft. They have been accused of practicing evil spells or incantation. This then leaded to them being punished or killed in early human civilizations. This presents a framework to explain the occurrence of otherwise random misfortunes such as sickness or death, and the witch sorcerer provides an image of evil. Many people were falsely accused and innocent people were killed.

Burning at the stake became the most common method of putting to death those accused of witchcraft or heresy. The victim was tied to the stake and then burnt alive in front of the whole village and kingdom. People that were accused of witchcraft were also beheaded or or hanged. Witches were also drowned and killed. There were many ways in which the witches died but these were the most common ones back in the day.

After the Court of Oyer and Terminer was dissolved, the Superior Court of Judicature took over the witchcraft cases. They did not allow spectral evidence. Most accusations of witchcraft then resulted in acquittals. An essay by Increase Mather, a prominent minister, may have helped stop the witch trials craze in Salem.
