I teach them them that even if they cannot write letters or words, they can make symbols and are still WRITING! We start with simple lines, circles, squiggles, etc and gradually work our way up to forming letters and stretching our words out with the aid of an alphabet chart. Students phonetically spell their words and get down their thoughts and then LC's or teachers can re-write their sentence in adult writing at the bottom of the student's page.
