Oral Stage- the baby seeks sexual pleasure through sucking at mother's breast. If mother stops too early, the baby may develop traits of clinging, pessimistic, and passivity. The person will want attention, since it lacked it as a baby.
2. Anal Stage- Toddler begins to control bowel movement. Anal fixations come from too harsh or too lenient potty training. It leads to either anal-expulsive (neatness and self control) or anal retentive (messiness and lack of self-discipline).
3. Phalli Stage- focuses on the genitals. Children discover difference between male and female. Children begin to identify themselves with the same-sex parent. Boys develop aggressive and independent traits. Girls develop nurturant and demure traits. They begin to develop these traits because they identify with their parent.
4. Latency Stage- sexual impulse lay dormant. Children develop social skills because of their interactions with family and peers. Helps develop trait of self-confidence.
5. Genital Stage- a person develops a strong interest in the opposite sex. If the person successfully completed all of  the other stages the person should have balanced personality. *ego- operates through the reality principle. It tries to satisfy the id, while making sure society approves.
*superego- is considered to be our internal
