Born in Sainte-Scholastique, which became Mirabel. Michel Desjardins has been raised in a small family, in plain campaign. Living close to the college where he studied for seven years, he didn't have to stay as a pensioner. Playing hockey or studying at school, he always preformed really well. In seventh grade, he had the choice between the seminary or the general college. His parents choosing for him, he ended at the seminary to become a priest. Still playing hockey in winter, he started playing tennis during summer. After five years studying to be a priest, he changed to commercial studies, still at the seminary, for another three years. Back in that time, "failing" to be a priest wasn't really well seen in the society. After his years at the seminary over, he wanted to go to university, but his money didn't let him. So, he worked as a teacher of physics, mathematics, religion, french and sciences for ten years. After this, he had enough to pay for university, where he earned himself a bachelor in affairs administration. Accountant in multiple companies, he now works for Clifton Group as one of the heads. Still working there after twenty years, he lives a peaceful life in Boisbriand. Things didn't always go well for him, but he still went through it all and there he is today, stronger than ever.

Thérien, William. Entrevue avec M.

Victorine Chakhtoura from Egypt has now been an early childhood educator for several years. This is fascinating given her painstaking journey. Indeed, it is never as easy as we think to change countries definitively.

There were a lot of reasons that led my mother to move to Canada. The first and not the least is due to a primordial need to feel safe. Indeed, in 1973 despite her very young age, she lived the war of Yom Kippur*. This war, despite the fact that it lasts 18 days, remains a trauma when you have lived it. Arriving here, she immediately felt safe.

Her arrival in Canada also demonstrates an important value that she has, that is, the family. Her father wanted more than anything for his family to move to Canada to have better living conditions. It was his dream. As a father of three children, he didn't have the money to achieve his dream. That's why my mother decided to realize this dream for him. This required many sacrifices, including abandoning one of her own dreams. Coming out of university she had the choice of teaching in the field of fine arts, but preferred to make a loved one's dream come true. Even if she has no regrets, the move here was not very easy.

In addition to having given up her dream in Egypt, she had to do it here too. Given the rent, food and other basic needs, she did not have the money to return to school to validate her Egyptian diplomas. So she decided to take care of herself through small jobs. As soon as she arrived here, she noticed an incredible phenomenon. The woman has far more rights here than in Egypt*. That was one of the reasons her father wanted her to come here. Indeed, the place of women in Egypt was not a terrific subject, but quite different to notice the difference.

After counting a lot of sacrifices, my mother decided a few years ago, once having attained a rather stable family life, to return to school. With her academic talents, in less than a year she was able to acquire a diploma as an early childhood educator. This job she chose it because she had spent several years taking care of me and my brother almost full time. She wanted to make sure that other young people like us had the chance to have a good education from a very young age.

That's what makes my mother my human. All these sacrifices have formed the person she is today, that is to say, a persevering person, open-minded, who always puts the needs of others before her own.

*About Yom Kippur War:

Opposed, from 6 October to 24 October 1973, Israel to a coalition led by Egypt and Syria.

*About women in Egypt:

It's not a really bad situation, but some of them rights came way longer after the men's one. For example, women in Egypt got the right to vote only in 1955.

Tétreault, Joëlle.

Raynald Sylvestre

Here’s the story of my grandfather which I always thought was amazing. Born in 1938, Raynald was the youngest of the family. He lived with his 2 brothers and 3 sisters. He had a tough childhood when his father left to join the Canadian military forces during World War II. His family was forced to live without him and tried to continue their lives by themselves. Raynald grew up as a shy little boy who never really had a male presence at home. His mom, Blanche, was really there for him and he’s really thankful that she was strong enough to raise her children alone. In 1945, nine months before the end of the war, his father died of tuberculosis, leaving his family alone for good. The next five years were really difficult for them, his mother went into a depression and one of his brothers killed himself because of the situation. He helped his mother the best he could and she finally recovered 2 years after. That’s when Raynald knew he needed a fresh start. He decided at the age of 18 to apply at Nicolet’s national police school inspired by the dedication of his father and that’s where he worked for next the next 40 years. During this period of time, he met his wife, Louise Deveault, and had two little boys, Martin and Maxim Sylvestre. They needed to move to different cities a lot of time, which has been difficult for the little boys at this time. Raynald promised to himself that he would never let down his family because he knew what it was like to raise alone a family and the consequence that came with it and that’s what I find so inspiring about him.

Sylvestre, Sandrine. So all of them had to take care each other. That is how she learned all her responsibilities and she always choose the family before making money when she found her job. She is also my grandmother, so when my parents go work she was taking of us. When it was the time to be mother she treats her kids with kindness, but it was hard at this time to find a nice job to raise her children with her husband. It was also the revolution tranquille, the families was smaller. So the religion went slowly away. So the rights of women grows, it was easier to find a job for her. She lived with her parents and her 10 brothers and sisters. They spent a lot of time together because they were a big family. Her childhood was pretty strict because of the war. Because her family was scared, during the night, they put dark bed sheets on the windows in case of the arriving of german soldiers. Her family and her moved a lot during her childhood because of financial problems. They could move three times a year. Véronique had a pretty good education and stopped school at the age of sixteen. That year, she met her husband and they married five years later. They've got two children and they moved a lot. She worked in a lot of banks during her life. Now, Véronique is a 73 years old grandmother. She is retired and she is living with her husband in an apartment in Montreal.

Maguy Hayek from St-Hilaire. Mrs Hayek is an educator in a public school in St-Hilaire. But she’s near from just that, she also is a wonderful grandmother of 8 children. I’ve always wondered what pushed her to be such a generous person. Not only with material things but mostly with her time. There’s always room for you in her house. She welcomes with warmt and enough food to feed an army. Since Mrs Hayek was born in Syria, she makes you discover a whole new world everytime you taste one of her traditional meals. Everybody says that she is the best cook of the middle east but she is way too humble to say so… What has intrigued me a lot about her in first place is that she always seems to find the good in everybody. She recently welcomed her relatives from Syria as refugees. Mrs Hayek even earned a prize because of everything she has done for the Syrian community. I find it incredible that she is willing to give so much of her time and money for a cause that means a lot to her. She also had to immigrate in Canada back in the 1960s because of the wars that occured in Syria (Six Days war). She had to let go of everything including her family that still lives there and her dream to become a pharmacist. She says that even if she hasn’t been able to pursue her dreams, she couldn’t be more grateful of everything she has now. She really is one of a kind.

Karazivan, Justine.

My oncle Marcel from coaticook. I think what impress me the most in his personality is his will to live. He take care of people around him and he is not afraid to give his time to someone else. In 1970 he had an accident and the doctor have been obligat to put a metal plate into his head. Twenty years later , his wife become ill. She had ALS(amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. She can’t walk, can’t eat alone , can’t dress her self alone. To resume , she is no longer able to do something that requires a movement. Oncle Marcel , after that , decided to taked care of her the rest of her life. His wife is not dead yet. Because of her mobility , he must feed her , wash her, dress her ,etc. As if it is not enough, he is actually fighting against bone cancer. When I ask him why he decided to do this he told me that whatever life gave you , every thing is easier when someone care about you and help you. His wife support him when he got his accident so this is normal for him to help her back.

She is now a nurse and pursues her studying at Université de Laval in Quebec. Since I was born, she is the biggest role model I have. Not just because she is kind to everyone and that she shares her happiness and joy of life every time she goes somewhere, but also because she doesn’t just talk about the things that she could do to change unfair things in life. She actually takes the time and all the energy she has to help people. My sister is only 22 years old and helps people everyday through her job. She also has done two internships in only one year in disadvantaged countries as a nurse. She and her group took care of a lot of people who really needed help and who couldn’t afford seeing a doctor. When she talks about her journeys, she is always shaken and sad to say how much these people don’t live with the same reality as us and that we are so lucky to live in Quebec. This made me realise that there is a lot of injustice and inequality that shows a big disparity between a lot of countries. Her devotion in life inspires me so much and I am so proud to have the chance to be her sister. That and many other reasons encouraged me to choose her as my human!

Gauthier, Ariane.

Benoit David, from L'Assomption, Québec. My father is a power systems manager at Présent, an information technology company. Growing up, he didn't really know what to do as a career. His interests for what he is doing now come from his computer class in CÉGEP. It was the first time that he had touched a computer and immediately fell in love with the concept and how it works. He then went to Herzing institute to take an programmer analyst class, which changed his life.

I have always been intrigued by how he manages to keep a good balance between his work and family and how he discovered this world, because when he was young, computers were not popular. I learned that he had to make many sacrifices when he first started to work because it was very demanding, but with all the progress and good work he has made since, he can now spend a lot of quality time with his family. In fact, he can do most of his work from home, which allowed him to take care of my sister and I when we were younger. He doesn't regret anything about his decisions because he has had many beautiful opportunities he would never have gotten if the popularity of computers in the early 80's would not have risen. I am proud of my father because he never stopped doing what he loved, even though he had absolutely no idea where it would bring him. He taught me to not be scared of the unknown and to always follow my dreams. His values and perseverance is what made me choose him as my human.

David, Catherine. Entrevue avec M.

Patrice Lapierre is born at Chandler in Gaspésie on Juin 22th, 1969. Since 2013, he lives at Saint-Hyacinthe with his wife, Annie. Patrice has been my mother’s friend for 28 years, and she always told me stories and anectodes about him, wich made me found him very interesting and intriguing. I decided to learn more about him and get to know him. Once I started to talk to him, I suddenly knew this man had a lot of experience inside him. What amazed me is how passionate he was in every word he said when he was talking to me. Through our discussion, I learned that Patrice served his country. On Juin 6th 1991, he decided to join Canadien army. Firstly, he was sent to Saint-Jean sur Richelieu to learn English and secondly, in 1992, to Borden, a military base in north Toronto, where he learned how to be a conductor for military trucks. It’s on July 1993 that he was sent to Bosnie with the UN Peacekeeping during eight months for his first mission. The purpose of this mission was to maintain peace after the Balkans war, wich was a very important cause for Patrice. In 1995, Patrice left for his second mission in Croatie for humanitarian help. But, not much time after this mission, he started to feel pain in his heart, and, after some tests, doctors discovered that he had a Pericardite, so he had a chirurgy to fix the problem, but it didn’t work and he’s stick with this disease for the rest of his life. Because of this, he was obligated to leave the Canadien army. When I asked him why he joined the army, he said to me that his dream has always been to help people and see the entire world, so, with the army, it was possible. What I admire the most about him is his sacrifices, because he never had a family with children and left all his friends behind him to pursue his dream. Also, even if he contracted a disease after a mission, he doesn’t regret because he knows he made a difference in the world. This is what makes him my HUMAN.

Coallier, Emmy. She had six children, but recently lost one, a few months ago. Thanks to this project, I had the opportunity to know a little bit more about her life and her personal accomplishments. She was born in October 1920, so she has nearly lived a century.

What surprised me most was the fact that she had to get married quickly and had to put aside her career dreams. My great grandfather and my great grandmother had met earlier and when World War II in 1939 took place, they began to feel the pressure. The army began with the unmarried men and as my great grandfather did not want to go in this battle, they decided to marry earlier. Many couples turned to this alternative and this phenomenon appeared under the name of "Race to marriage". They got married quickly and began to have children. Their first child was born in 1941. Subsequently, five more children arrived.

This event had radically change the life of my great grandmother. Her dream was to be a teacher, but because of this unexpected decision, she could never have become a teacher. In short, even if some obstacles have arisen, she has succeeded to transmit some important values to these children and will become a housewife with tremendous patience and unconditional love.

Bouchard, Naomie.

Jean-Pierre Bégin from Repentigny, Québec. My dad's life didn't start in a quite usual way. Back on August 3rd of 1975, my dad was born in the city of Jonquière in Saguenay and was given for adoption. His mother was too young and couldn't afford raising a little boy. They kept him in a nursery where my grandmother and my grandfather, Raymonde Ladouceur and Robert Bégin, adopted him because they couldn't have a second child. Because of the lifestyle and the way that people think and see the world back then, the concept of giving a child for adoption was something that people did way more often than now. It was also much simpler than today and not as expensive as it can be now. I am very thankful for this because without any of that, I probably wouldn't be alive right now! Growing up in Jonquière, my dad changed schools a lot but finally made it to the Cégep of Jonquière in a program called Pure and Applied Sciences. He met my mom for the first time in these hallways and they fell in love with each other. They decided to move to Montreal together to go to university. My dad studied accounting and, since then, has worked for Hydro-Québec as "chef en info de gestion". He now has a wonderful family, including two kids, my brother and I, and even knows his biological mother and he sees her sometimes. I'm really proud to have a father like him and hope to be as accomplished as he is one day!

Bégin, Ève-Marie.

My grandmother was born in February 1948, she's now 69 years old. A few months after she had my aunt in 1964 "the Papa Doc" that is Francois Duvalier went from the president of Haiti to his dictator. He established his dictatorship in the country. My grandfather, my grandmother's husband was "an uncle macoute" and a great friend of the Duvalier. At least my grandmother was safe by herself overseas from her safety and her family. My grandmother has always been someone extraordinary generous and kind. She did not like my grandfather's behavior, hanging out with the Duvalier, so when my father was born in 1966 she decided to release him from Haiti. She found a VISA for her children and brought them to Canada. My grandmother left my grandfather to educate my dad in a safe country. Although, she was sent back to Haiti, she had been living with her family for many years, when she had to leave my father at the age of 21, who was on his own. She fought a lot to come back to Canada. She now lives in "Pointe-aux-tremble" where she can be with her children forever. I am grateful for what my grandmother did for our family, maybe, today, I would not have been here ..

My father is native from the city of Pointe-aux-trembles. He lived with a single mother because is father died when he was young. My father was a camelot. He was distributing the newspapers in order to make a pocket money because his mother could not pay him anything he wanted. Sometimes, when he finished passing the newspapers, there were surplus copies. My father who was always a great lover of politics, at that time he was reading the articles concerning Pierre Elliot Trudeau who was a Federalist who once struggled with the Seperatist (René Lévesque). With the money collected, my father purchased a motorcycle on his own and decided to go to the Canada festival in ottawa. At the time, there was always a mania around Pierre which was always impressive for my father when he was young. When he was there, he had the chance to meet the President. What touches me the most in this story is that it was really something significant for my father because he could meet his idol in addition to meeting his idol in addition to memorizing the memories he exchanged with his father about Federalist. Im prood of my father because he always keeps is memories with is father and now he try to make good memories with my brother and I. For him, family is the most important value.

Aubry, Anne.

My great cousin, Vincent is a teacher who works far from here in Wemindji a place where there’s a “Crie ” population, an Aboriginal society. When I was younger, I used to see him a whole lot more than now because before he was a teacher there, he played music ; he was a singer in a rock group, he was a teacher of driving class, he studied in education and was travelling a lot. He has always been someone who I thought was fascinating because he got along well with everyone because he’s very open about everything and when I was young, he tried to demonstrate his passions to me through teaching me how to play some musical instruments and talking to me about things he saw or did. I think what made him want to work with an Aboriginal community is due to his many trips everywhere around the world where he saw different cultures that he always was impressed with. He works in a community where school isn't a priority, it can easily be taken for a second choice because of the history it has. The “Loi sur les Indiens” plays a big part in their negative way of seeing our society because this law tried to take their culture away because the government gave itself the right to administrate the Indians. The integration of the Aboriginal society to ours is still something new, in a way where nowadays, they act more like us as a society instead of just living with their own way of thinking and acting. I think he really is helping to make a major difference by teaching there because he's someone socially conscious of others and is concerned by the impact he leaves behind.

Arsenault, Marianne, entrevue avec Vincent B. ,Le dimanche le 2 avril 2017, dans le cadre d'un projet en Monde Contemporain/Anglais au collège de l'Assomption

Diane Tremblay, my maternal grand mother. I have always been intrigued by her and by the life she has lived. This is why I decide to sit with her and to discuss a little bit about this. She told me that when she was young, school was not obligated like today. In her case she went to school until her fifth year in primary school because she had to help her mother with her younger brothers and sisters. Then when her brothers and sisters has growing up, she starts working in a tabacco field in summer like most people in those days. It was a very demanding work because sometimes the weather was very hot and she get severe sunburns or it was a very rainy day. She had told me that if she has had the chance to continue her studies she would have do it but she is however happy of her life. Personally, i think that it's this event that made her such a good person with beautiful values and she bring me hope that if you really want to do something you can even if your not the most educated. You never learn more than by yourself.

Angers, Loriann.

" When you love someone, you have to tell them everyday ", my grandmother, Edna Landry, says. When you look at this woman, her remarkable capacity to adapt to any situation explains why she seems to be so strong now. However, behind this proud human being is hidding a hardworking youthful woman.

This woman promotes all forms of love and this is how she acts with her family. Younger, she didn't have a lot of things, but this poverty showed her how important generosity is. In fact, my grandmother grew up in New-Brunswick during the Second World War*, in a huge family composed of nine little sisters and brothers. Her father was a soldier, but his injuries forced him to get back to Canada. Then, unable to work, my grandmother had to fend for her beloved family by remplacing her father at work. Life was hard, but the love that my grandmother felt for her family helped her face the storm she was going through.

Today, she gives more than she can own without hesitation because she wants no one to be left alone and suffer like she did. She doesn't stop giving me gifts and little attentions the most she can. The most incredible thing about her is that she doesn't want anything back, except joy. Moreover, her strong capacity of comprehension helps her understand people's reactions or choices instead of judging them, which makes her a calm and helpful person.

My grandmother taught me that life is full of challenges that you have to hold and not fear. She is the living proof that you have to use difficulties to get the best gifts, which explains why she is my human.

* The Second World War (World War ll) was a global armed conflict from September 1, 1939 to September 2, 1945. This conflict opposed the Allies (United States, France, United Kingdom, Canada, etc.) to the Axis (Germany, Italy, Japan, etc.) It was provoked, in part, by the unsatisfactory ending of the First World War and by hegemonic and expansionist convictions of the Axis. The Canada played an important role and the war affected the country by revolutionizing his industrial structure and giving a bigger role to women in his economy, for example.

Beauchesne, Guillaume.

Nathalie Michel from L'assomption, Québec. Nathalie Michel teaches to kids with mental intellectual disability at the polyvalente Paul-Arsenault. I have always been intrigued by her choice of doing this particular job. She loves her job and she would change for any other. I am amazed by the fact that she chooses to go in vacation every year with her students. Her is a big part of my intrigue. She often comes home tired, because her students can be dangerous sometimes. Through this project I discovered that she lost one kidney about 20 years from now. Kidneys are a pair of organs in the abdominal cavity. They are excreting urine, and because of her lost, she needs to drink two times more water a day to be fully functional. It is beyond amazing that a woman with three children have the generosity of taking care of an entire groups of disable kids. When I asked Nathalie the reason behind her decision to take the students on vacation she mentioned that she felt the society wasn't taking care enough of the mentally disabled people. She got involved with her assistant in this big project. She proved that disable people can do normal activities. Every year, the PPA organize the défi, where they all make teams and do every sports they can : hockey, soccer, race, baseball, basketball... I am so proud that she is my mother and happy to have chosen her as my hero.

Beausejour, Alexis.
