Definition of Language and Its Characteristics

Language is a complex and structured system of communication that involves the use of symbols spoken, written, or signed to convey meaning. It is a fundamental tool for human interaction, allowing individuals to express thoughts, emotions, intentions, and cultural values. According to Fromkin, Rodman, and Hyams (2018), language is defined as "a system of communication that uses sounds or symbols that are combined according to grammatical rules" (p. 4). This system enables speakers to generate an infinite number of messages from a finite set of elements.

Characteristics:

Arbitrariness
There is no natural or logical link between the words we use and the objects or ideas they represent. For instance, the word "tree" has no inherent connection to the actual object; it’s simply a term that has been collectively agreed upon by a language community (Yule, 2020).

Creativity (Productivity)
Language gives speakers the ability to form countless unique sentences, many of which may have never been spoken before. This limitless potential demonstrates how flexible and dynamic human communication can be (Pinker, 1994).

Displacement
Humans can use language to discuss things that are not immediately visible or present, such as past experiences, future plans, or even imaginary scenarios. This contrasts with most animal communication, which is typically tied to the here and now (Yule, 2020).

Duality of Patterning
Language functions on two distinct levels: individual sounds (which are meaningless by themselves) and combinations of those sounds that produce meaningful units like words. This layered structure allows for complex expression (Fromkin et al., 2018).

Cultural Transmission
Unlike innate biological traits, language is passed on through social interaction and learning within a cultural context. People acquire language by being exposed to it, especially during early development (Yule, 2020).

Discreteness
Language is made up of separate, identifiable elements (like sounds and words) that follow specific rules. These elements can be combined in various ways, allowing for clarity and structure in communication (Pinker, 1994).

References

Fromkin, V., Rodman, R., & Hyams, N.

Language is the way we communicate with other people. Our language has patterns and rules so that we can understand each other clearly. For example we have set spellings and grammar rules, as well as an understanding on how to pronounce words. Especially the rules on how to pronounce a word can change between regions even in the same country. This is down to differences in accent and dialect.

Life Education Trust.

Language is a system of conventional spoken, manual, or written symbols using which human beings, as members of a social group and participants in its culture, express themselves. Among the functions of language, we find: communication, the expression of identity, play, imaginative expression, and emotional release. In spoken language we have noises resulting from movements of certain organs between the throat and mouth. These noises enter our brain in order to be understood, process the information and reply with our answer to what we understood.

Crystal, David, Robins, & Henry, R.

What is language?

A language is a system of conventional spoken, manual (signed), or written symbols by means of which beings express themselves. The more complex a language is, the more varied its display of functions and characteristics. The typical functions of language include communication, the expression of identity, play, imaginative expression, and emotional release.

Let’s dig deeper

Language is, at its core, the medium through which human beings relate to themselves, each other, and the wider world. If we separate language from social interaction, it will leave us with very interesting, but partial understandings of what language is.

It has some common traits, such as:

Language is communicative.

Language is arbitrary in nature.

Language is structured.

Language is generative.

Language is dynamic.

This last one is important. For linguist Suzanne Romaine, “any attempt to count distinct languages will be an artifact of classificatory procedures rather than a reflection of communicative practices.” So, disclaimer, any definition is only useful to its end, but is not an intrinsic truth in itself. Language is a functional category. Much like the heap paradox, we can’t tell in a precise way when it converts from one state to another. But it does and language is important.

https://stillmantranslations.com/language-functions-of-language-definition-of-language-translations/

Language is a system that people use to communicate ideas and feelings. It is made up of sounds, words, and rules that help us talk, write, or use signs to share what we think. One special thing about language is that words do not have a natural link with their meanings; people decide what they mean (Britannica, 2025). Language also has grammar rules so we can join words in correct ways. It lets us talk about the past, present, and future, and we learn it from our families and communities (Britannica, 2025). This makes language not only a tool for talking but also part of our culture.

Source, Reference (APA):

Britannica, T. Editors of Encyclopaedia. (2025, July 17). Language.

Language is a human communication tool that uses a set of symbols, such as words, sounds, or gestures, to share thoughts, feelings, ideas, and information. It’s a system that follows certain rules (grammar and structure), allowing people to create and understand messages.
