The best classroom environment that I have experienced in my educational career was in my grade ⅔ split class. In this class, I was in grade 2, therefore being one of the younger students in the class, I oftentimes felt intimidated by the grades 3s and would suppress my engagement. However, I remember the teacher being very kind and caring. She always supported and encouraged me to gain the confidence to work with the class as a whole. She also encouraged the grade 3s to help and support the grade 2s, so we felt comfortable with each other. Her effort to ensure that both grades collaborated made for a supportive and whole classroom environment.

The best classroom environment I experienced in my educational career was with my Grade 4 teacher. She created an incredibly inclusive and supportive atmosphere, especially for students with sensory needs—something that wasn’t commonly discussed in the early 2000s. Her classroom was in a portable, and rather than relying on harsh fluorescent lighting, she would often turn the lights off and use lamps to create a warm, cozy environment, particularly during group reading sessions. This made the classroom feel safe and comfortable for everyone.

I also remember how she made me feel truly seen and accepted. At the time, I was self-conscious about my curly hair because people would often make comments suggesting I should straighten it to "look better." One day, my teacher came to school wearing her hair curly instead of pulled back or straightened. She proudly talked about how curly hair is beautiful and unique, which gave me the confidence to embrace my own curls. After that day, I noticed that my classmates began to think my curly hair was something special rather than something to criticize. This simple yet powerful gesture helped me feel comfortable in my own skin, and it’s something I’ll never forget.

The best classroom environment I have experienced in my educational career was my grade 7 French class. My teacher was a positive influence on us all. She was a great role model and demonstrated how to make class feel fun while also setting boundaries that everyone respected. I always thought to myself if I ever became a teacher, I would want to be like her as she said the environment welcoming to everyone, non-judgemental and maintained respect from all of her students. Her classroom was set up in a way that was accessible to every student (able to see the board, work alongside peers or independently if you preferred), gave us the option to listen to music and offered a variety of assessment opportunities (plays, tests, games) etc.

My grade 7/8 classroom (it was the same) was my absolute favourite! Our classroom was the 'science lab' so we had regular desks and lab benches to use as workspace. My teacher had assigned seating for the first few weeks as we all were getting to know each other. However, afterwards we were free to choose where we wanted to sit, allowing us autonomy to choose where we learn best. In this way, we had a flexible space that was co-created by the educator and the students, making it feel like OUR space.

The best classroom environment I experienced was in my elementary year of grade 6 in middle school. The classroom setting had the desks lined up in rows facing forward in the direction of the chalkboard and the teacher. However, there was a reading station with a couch and a shelf filled with books at the back of the classroom for students to utilized during free time or reading periods throughout the day. I remember finishing my classwork early and being able to decide if I wanted to read at my desk or at the of the classroom. Sometime we were even able to do our classwork at the back of the classroom if the couch was open, if it wasn't there was a sign up sheet allowing the next student to use the space. The male teacher was enthusiastic, caring and assertive but not dictating which showed through his interactions with us as his students. He gave us the option to make classroom decisions as a whole which created a collaborative atmosphere. He answered our questions with patience even when we were acting out as young children. He created a safe, open and engaging classroom environment for us.
