In Ken Robinson’s changing education paradigms, he talks about the current education system; how it is obsolete considering the current scenario of globalisation, and un predictable demands of economies. He speaks about the stimulating distractions around children and how it is unrealistic to expect them to focus on something in which they have least interest. He mentions how longitudinal study proved that children of younger age have the maximum capacity for divergent thinking and as they grow older it decreases. He is right to an extent. When we talk about changing demands of economies and how having a degree alone does not necessarily qualify one to secure a decent job. It does not mean we do not need formal education, rather there should be a balance between acquisition of skill as well as knowledge. We need to embrace diversity. Teach about diverse cultures, religions, languages to give them a wider perspective on life. This will enable students to be compassionate; they will understand the world around them and within them and become fulfilled individuals. Our curriculums need to be interdisciplinary and classes agile, so students see a purpose in learning. Teaching them to identify real life challenges and allowing them to find solutions through collaboration and research will develop life skills which will enable them to adopt to changing situations.

The narrator Ken Robinson talks about the current education system, the problems associated with it and the potentially damaging consequences that it renders. He also analyses how we can revolutionize the system in order to bring about better learning. As Sir Ken Robinson illustrates, in the past, the accumulated knowledge held in brain was sufficient. in todays modern world, it no longer is. He argues that we need our children and students to make sense of their world, a world very different from the one we experienced. And if we do want our students to make sense of their world, we need to create opportunities for them to think at higher levels, to think outside the box. The range of technology that today's children have adopted and have adapted to has created a new environment that they actually engage in for social simulation, as well as an environment that has become second nature for them. To reach these kids and engage with them in a teacher student role, we must encourage them to be active, reflective, inquiring and investigating in their learning. We need to be constantly learning and developing what is required to better equip our students and ourselves for life and work in the 21st century.

Sir Ken Robinson is one of the famous education advisor, a motivational speaker and innovator. As per Robinson ‘school of thoughts, our education system is consecutively failing our students and we need to seriously look into this matter by taking certain fruitful measures. We should prepare a child for his life, means the way he would cope up with life and would set the desired standards. Robinson believes that we should bring joy in learning and should make the learning fun for the students. We should teach the students in a way that their hidden potential should be brought out and polished and engage our students in learning through technical and professional resources.

He argues that we need our children and students to make sense of their world, a world very different from the one we experienced and a child must cope up with all the needs and demands of the current society.
Pakistan’s Education Crisis: Pakistan’s Education Crisis by Nadia Naviwala appears to be a harsh commentary on the insights of Pakistan’s education dilemmas. It provokes questions that have been heard and discussed before but die out with the exigency to revamp the system altogether. The predicament of, education yet uneducated, emerging from the absent -teacher scenario or the teacher not putting in his/her effort is somewhat distressing, essentially exposing the absence of seriousness and the tenacity to produce against the monetary gains the individuals are receiving form the government. The report to some extent, circumvents the innovatory role of private sector education which has rescued the sinking ship of Pakistan’s Education Sector. Despite not being able to provide access to the masses because of their limited outreach, the private schools have been the means of producing intellectual output, reinforcing the educated citizens club of the country. The language paradox, though mocked on the platform such as this, underpins the narrative that language efficiency is secondary to the basic acquirement of world knowledge. Pakistan should implicate a strong and unhindered language policy to untangle the absurdity at grass root level. Unfortunately, the grievance of international donors; their funds not efficiently utilized seems absolutely the case. Yet, the report doesn’t reflect on the deterrence of societal mindset of the masses which is driven by extreme religious beliefs and traditions set by the society.

Difference between schooling and education . Sasha Alyson is an American writer and businessman who started Alyson Publications in 1979. In the report under discussion, he argued that generally schooling and education are gauged with same parameters , however, he thinks that schooling is a formal, time bound, specifically designed, enrollment targeted, and graded oriented whereas Education is an ongoing process both formal and informal .In the words of Albert Einstein: “Education is what remains after one has forgotten what one has learned in school.” Moreover, curriculum requires a thorough review by different developing countries , considering the contemporary and individual learning needs that include inclusion, research , collaborative learning, life skills and apprenticeship that can be linked with real life application rather than focusing on those concepts which have very less significance in practical life in contrast to what Colonialism entailed through a range of motives by inculcating obedience rather than real and independent thinking. If we compare education with schooling, education is a continuous process which is beyond any curriculum , results and can be considered as 'communal experience' because it can be gleaned from any source irrespective of its background. Moreover , education is an imperceptible and persistent process where different information can be absorbed without any assessment purpose . Real life experiences, challenges and situations can train to deal with any situation . Therefore, instead of imparting imaginary and idealistic concepts, it is better to expose new generation to these challenges because the world is progressing rapidly , thus making traditional concepts redundant and not fit to meet their learning needs when they have an immense exposure to technology. 'Change is the end result of all true learning'. – Leo Buscaglia

Ken Robinson highlighted the different learning theories of the human mind which changed the perspective of learning throughout the world. He mentioned the need for divergent thinking. I agree with this because as an early year’s teacher I have seen students coming up with multiple solutions rather than sticking to one point. Ken Robinson states that a paradigm shift is required rather than reform. I believe that a shift will help our students deal with their psychological or behavioral problems and will give them opportunities to enhance their thinking just by shifting the outlook of education. I think this set pattern or a standardized pattern hinders their creativity. In shifting paradigms, ken highlighted the benefits for pupils working in groups. I second that because in my opinion as a teacher more minds when come together work more progressively and not just they learn academically they also focus on skills to deal with one another which is necessary for their personal growth. He talked about the plague of ADHD and said that our children are mostly living in a stimulating environment. I disagree because ADHD does affect children as one of my students has symptoms of ADHD and requires special attention in class. She gets distracted more and needs extra attention to do everyday tasks.

Maham Pasha
DHA Campus

Saman Abbasi Schooling and education are two different things. The premise that once a child is going to school, he/she is gaining ample education is widely accepted to be true. The report by KarmaColonialism questions this premise. It blames the United Nations for perpetrating the view that school enrolment is imperative for education and is the only way forward to educate students. It totally negates the education students gain from their parents at home while completing household chores or while farming or communicating with family members etc. The report essentially questions the current education system at two levels. The first being why education is thought to be limited to schools only and how large enrolment numbers are associated with a positive change. Habits and life skills, collaboration and communication, life enrichment skills are all forms of education- and these are not necessarily learnt at school. The second problem focuses on rote learning and other traditional methods of teaching and how they are producing students who are “parrots”. These students are neither taught to be innovative nor diverse. A monoculture is developed where falling in line is the best way forward. And the biggest problem is that the organizations pushing for such education see nothing wrong and are patting themselves for a job well done. It is my view that school enrolment is just as important as gaining education at home. Of course, the schools need to learn new methods of teaching and encourage students and parents to change their unquestioning attitudes towards the traditional methods of teaching. Whereas education at homes is essential and develops life skills and interpersonal skills, the importance of school education cannot be negated. Schools teach discipline, curricular knowledge, peer interaction and a spirit of competition that the students cannot get at home. So, both education gained in and out of school is important. An in any case increased school enrolment is an important indicator of progress, particularly in third world countries.

The majority of educators want to be able to give their students the skills to be divergent thinkers and think in a variety of ways that leads them to a variety of solutions. However, standardized testing has forced the idea of one solution and one answer into the classroom. Students brains all work differently. Giving one solution is hindering the ability of students who are able to think in a different way and come to a solution in a way that is not standardized. It was interesting to see how 98% of kindergarteners tested were divergent thinkers and that this decreased over time and with education. Students are able to think in ways that we do not know because we don’t give them the chance to think for themselves. Students have become lazy because they know that eventually the answer will be handed to them and they do not need to push themselves to their full potential. Many teachers want to bring divergent thinking into the classroom but the requirements placed on them bog them down and force them into a way of teaching that is not what they had originally pictured. As adults, we would be insulted if someone said we were all the same. We pride ourselves on being individuals and unique. However, we look at children as if they were all the same.
Sabina Khan

I think the point to ponder is that budget which is allocated by Government for better public education is not used but misused. Instead of using that amount( 790 billion Pakistani Rs for the year 2016) for better infrastructure of schools and professional development of teachers that budget is majorly used to increase the salaries of ghost or absent teachers in most of public schools across Pakistan. The dilemma of our public education is that teachers who were hired 25-30 years back after doing PTC( primary teaching certificate) or CT(certificate of teaching) and they had degrees of matric or intermediate level are currently teaching our future generation in public schools. While young teachers who are Masters or M-phil degree holders along with their professional trainings had to wait for retirement of those old teachers. Here comes the productive role of private schools who would hire those professionals and they will produce students whose learning will be a step ahead then those who are getting education in public sector. Our teachers in public sector are either not trained or if they are trained they are unable to deliver in class rooms. As a result of this teaching is going on in classes without learning.
The author of report also emphasized the importance of education reforms in Pakistan.
In my opinion, reforms can only be done if each and every individual who is responsible for it will play a fruitful role even if they are politicians, educationist, teachers or parents. We not only need to send maximum students to school but we also need to let them learn. It's need of time to produce learners who can think out of the box and can implement their learning in their daily lives.
Eema Fatima
Chakwal Campus

In this modern day and age, education and creativity have both advanced in ways our predecessors could not have predicted. Ken Robinson’s idea on Changing Education Paradigms has highlighted that fact, speaking on how a system of education that may have been suitable in the age it was created in, might not be suitable enough to apply in this century. The idea of education that was proposed back then, now impels in young minds alike the idea that they should all conform inside of the small box the education system has provided for them. Inside that small box, there remains no room for their creativity and ingenuity to shine. Students are fed with the belief that the words written inside of their textbooks are absolute, thereby compelling them to comply with the standardized notion of education. This practice is ultimately leading to the demise of the arts, and creating a world where humans are starting to become more machine-like by the day. With so many distractions in the world, even rare disorders such as ADHD are starting to become more commonly diagnosed. Everyone has their own capacity, a certain level, a setting which brings out the best of them. Giving them creative liberty is what I believe the education system should start prioritising.

By Neelam Nisar
To start with, the report deals with some important issues related to our education system that turn out as hindrances in the achievement of the saying, "WELL EDUCATED PAKISTAN". The foremost issue is the non receptive attitude of parents towards education for whom a child earning is better than attending school. Secondly, when they initiate to admit their wards; the teachers and the school are ghost employees of a ghost school. Here, I would suggest that the authorities need to take strict action against such setups.
Next is the revelation of the equivalence of Pakistan's education budget with that of its Military: an utter surprise. But if its true then the stakeholders and the concern high-up are accountable for the appropriate implementation of this budget. They mustn't hesitate from introducing firm and positive policies where quality is improved. Even the article suggests the need of quality over quantity.
The educational reforms introduced in 2003 in Punjab first, and later in other provinces are part of the improvement plan but till date there isn't any exemplar of the implementation of these reform except for few. For student, the first thought of a class is that of a cage or a confinement and of a teacher; a torturer. This mindset could only be changed if teachers are given exposure at national and international level where they explore effective means and ways of teaching-learning experiences.

n the video “Ken Robinson- Changing Paradigms of Education” the narrator in detail discusses the entire chain of Public education, how it was developed to what is actually wrong with it and how is that affecting our current generational narratives. Ken in details has discussed the elements of the system of public education that were handed over from the 17th century onwards and are more industrialized rather than specified, to which I totally agree as the 21st Century learner totally differs to agree with the social and political norms that are being injected into them and rather believe in individual needs and specified attention that aligns with their capacities and capabilities and are divergent Learners. However I beg to differ with one of the ideas discussed in the video which was “Modern Epidemic of ADHD” according to me any child suffering from this particular disorder is not routinely medicated but rather needs the medication to slow down the impulse of attention seeking, they do need specified attention and are to be catered differently from a child with normal attention span and concentration. The entire idea revolves around that we need to raise life smart individuals rather than exam smart individuals.

The first education system was structured at the time of Industrial Revolution hence it was structured a lot around principles used to get factory workers in line. At the time, it was a revolutionary idea because before it there was no concept of public education. Now the education system is being improved globally but unfortunately this is being done by following the same steps as our ancestors. Ringing bells, separation of students based on gender, subject and age. Children are placed in batches even when we know that children of the same age do not always function the same way. This has contributed to alienation of children at a mass. Our current education system's actual victims are the children that are inclined towards the arts. They are not deemed important since, conventionally, they do not give economic benefit to the society. They are then forced to learn and are judged in our traditional education system where their capacity for being creative is significantly minimized the more they get "educated". They are prescribed special medications to increase their focus which are potentially harmful and cause them to be diagnosed with ADHD. Our system of standardization is a failed one in this time and age. We need to change our education paradigms by moving away from this production line mentality.
- Fatima Batool

Ken Robinson is an internationally recognized leader in the development of education, creativity and innovation. He was a great critic of the current educational system. He highlighted that current education system is based on 18th century practices that are not applicable to the 21st century learners. Teachers are unable to maintain interest of learners and label them as ADHD sufferers instead of revising their teaching practices. All the students are judges on the same criteria and more importance has been given to achieve good grades.

I believe that teachers need to be reflective in their practices and incorporate diverse teaching practices in order to develop skills of the students. They should treat every child as a unique individual and must provide them with opportunities that make them think on a broader level. This can be achieved if teachers adopt strategies to cater the needs of different types of learners. They need to plan such activities that appeal the personal interest of students and click and stick to their minds.

At the same time, students must be encouraged to be active, reflective, inquiring and investigating in their learning activities. Technology needs to be integrated so that our students can equip themselves with the skills to meet the challenges of 21st Century.

Rumana Ahmed
CCI

In my decade and a half experience as an educationalist, I have been always looking for answers to the questions that arise in the context of current public education. Mr. Ken Robinson has beautifully highlighted issues and solutions to those problems in the video Changing Education Paradigms. We are living in an ever-changing world that is dominated by globalization and rapid advancement in science and technology. Our children belong to this age then how we can educate them using techniques that are a century old? As Hazrat Ali(A.S) has said that “Do not raise your children the way your parents have raised you as they are born in different ages.” Our school system endorse industrialization where the input is children, they are processed in a certain way and we expect the same outcome. The icing on the cake is that children's intellectual capabilities are judged through grades that they earn through standardized testing. We are sedating our children to get an education. I have always wondered all children that opt for education earn their degrees at a particular age, however, every child is unique and so are their learning capabilities and interests.

Sir Ken Robinson challenges the existing educational system by outlining its origins, its intended purpose in the age of industrialization, and its consequences both intended and unintended.

Robinson contends that the inherent problem lies in not changing our education with changing times. That the promise of a guaranteed job after college is dead because the system is broken. I believe, this is the most apparent flaw- one only has to see the statistics around joblessness.

He further posits that learning institutions are eerily similar to factory lines. Both have compartments, ringing bells, and most shockingly standardization. They divide people into “smart and non-smart” categories. Consequently, many people think less of themselves. Many parents and students I come across often consider Arts and Humanities to be lesser than Sciences so there is evidence of this assertion to be true.

Lastly, Robinson talks about divergent thinking. He quotes a study that shows a direct correlation between standardized education and a decrease in divergent thinking.

The video has challenged as well as affirmed some of my existing beliefs. It implores the listeners to improve the education system to question the ‘one-size-fits-all’ policy so we can nurture a learner’s ability to grow.

According to Ken Robinsons the education system was built upon the industrial revolution. The problem with the current education system is that it was conceived in the cultural context of the Enlightenment and the economic context of the industrial revolution.

Our factory type of education destroys or ability for divergent thinking and ADHD is considered an epidemic of our time. Robinson feels we should destroy the myth that there is a divide between academic and non academic subjects, and between the abstract and the theoretical.

Robinson seems to be suggesting we have a more post-modern approach to education , freeing schools and teachers up so they can inspire more creativity in the classroom rather than being constrained by the autocracy of standardized testing. For example ADHD children have different requirement and they can be facilitated through differentiated tasks and techniques.

He recognize that most great learning takes place in groups and collaboration is the stuff of growth, rather than individualizing people which separates them from their natural learning environment. For example Collaboration goes hand in hand. Every individual can come up with different idea and to support with learning difficulties.

Saira Farooq
Rawal Campus

Without a doubt, this article is the perfect portrayal of current educational system in Pakistan. Due to outdated practices brought in by colonial governments, the term education has lost much of its original meaning and purpose. Most of the time ,the teaching - learning style is predominantly based on memorizing facts and reproducing these in examination as a result, creativity is stifled. Students who are naturally creative are at risk of being " downgraded" in today's educational system. To eradicate rote memorization from our education system, Government should inculcate a culture of innovation in the schools. The existing infrastructure of schools should be repaired and augmented. Training workshops should be arranged for instructors to deal with critical thinking and analytical modes of teaching. Moreover, students are likely to retain material if they are able to make meaningful connections between what they have learned and relate it to their own personal experiences. Hence , it is very important that teachers should provide equal opportunities to all students to solve problem on their own which develops confidence and independence. The ability to solve problem independently will also lessen the fear of accepting the challenging tasks. So education is not about enrolment but developing skills to help the learners to grow and become critical thinkers.

In the field of education, the importance of research and modifications is undeniable. This essay will focus on the changes we need to bring in our current educational patterns .

First and foremost, the standardization in educational systems should not exist anymore. It hinders the learning process by creating an environment where learners feel judged. In my opinion, this can be done by letting students chose from a variety of subjects. A child should not have to worry if he can’t attempt a mathematic problem. Instead, he could explore his interests and do what he is better at. All subjects should be considered equally valuable.

Secondly, Learning in teams and in collaboration is more fruitful instead of learning in a competitive environment. Group learning is more effective than traditional methods in improving critical thinking. (Brans ford et al.,2000). In the past ,where students would hide their work from each other in order to achieve better grades they should now be encouraged to share the knowledge with each other. Therefore, group work and activity based learning should be considered an integral part of the lesson.

I would conclude this essay by emphasizing on the role of educationists and educational institutions as change agents. It would be best if they facilitate the children of this age according to their needs by providing them with opportunities where they can learn in collaboration, exhibit creativity without the fear of being wrong and learn through self-discovery.

Education is the most powerful weapon which can use to change the world. (Nelson Mandela).

According to Ken Robinson’s “Changing Education Paradigm” not only challenges but also arises a lot of questions regarding our education system. Educational systems should be more accommodating, in terms of encouraging diversity. Learners should feel the freedom to learn and express themselves in different ways. The purpose of educating our children should be to help them to open their minds and use their imagination and ability to learn. It should improve their knowledge and skills to help them to become a better person in the world. Education should be free for all and there should not be any discrimination. However, the reality is a bitter truth. Our schools have turned into money-generating businesses. The purpose of providing quality education to our children is no more. Students have become robots i-e write and learn. Furthermore, we need to reform our education system. We should promote Divergent Thinkers as great learning happens in groups. It will have a fruitful effect on children in the 21st century. In short, to compete in the world with other developed countries, higher education authorities should provide excellence, education to our children to face the challenges at the global level. “The future of the world is in my classroom”.

Masooma

Sir Ken Robinson described the education system in his Ted Talk session (2010);

“We have a system of education that is modeled on the interest of industrialism and in the image of it. School are still pretty much organized on factory lines — ringing bells, separate facilities, specialized into separate subjects. We still educate children by batches.”

Sir Ken Robinson’s pointed out that our ‘Modern’ education system is based upon the 18th century model that was the need of that certain time period and not what our young generation required for today’s criteria. He also emphasized that because of this traditional approach in our educational institutes, students are suffering from many of the psychiatric issues like ADHD. Most importantly, he criticized the evaluation system and techniques that we have adopted to judge the learning of students. He also raised question that the dilemma we are facing due to the current education system, can it be changed to fulfill the requirements of modern day?

Keeping in mind the Ken Robinson’s lecture, I felt that all these problems identified by him are very much true. It is the need of time to restructure our education system and the modus operandi to evaluate the learning of students. The Common Core Standards that we following is not enough to meet the requirements of 21st Century, where competition is already increased and businesses are challenging more than before.
Syed Zain Ali

Sir Ken Robinson has highlighted a global shift in the educational paradigm and suggested to get over educational stereotypes, pay attention to group collaboration and culture of the institute. Blessinger et al. (2018) second the opinion of Robinson and studied radical change in the core concepts and practices of education. Similarly, Chomal (2013) studied information technology as the cause of educational paradigm shift. This approach makes sense as the traditional educational system is unable to meet the demands of this technological era. Our educational system has failed to produce satisfied and successful citizens. It is evident from 10.2% increase in the percentage of ADHD children in the recent years. The educational system needs a paradigm shift in order to get rid of drab old concepts of academic and non-academic activities. Group work and collaboration provide an enabling environment for learning as it develops problem solving, critical thinking, innovation, enterprising, and teamwork. The environment of institute plays a major role in education of our children and it is not limited to a classroom. These three steps, though simple, can bring a paradigm shift in education. In a nutshell, paradigm shift in education is real and we need to devise effective strategies to meet its needs.
Monazza Ashraf

Asma Samar

Sir Ken Robinson, portrayed the real picture of our education system and the problems our students are facing. When he says, “We are trying to meet the future by doing what was done in the past and this is alienating our students”, is the main cause of the failure of our education system.
The fact is that most of the strategies used in the past are outdated now. Students are confused and find no attraction in their classes as their distractions are much more attractive and challenging than the tasks done in their classes.
It is a fact that the number of psychological, emotional and mental issues are at its peak in this generation rather than it was in any other in the past. Children of this era are extremely sensitive and can make any serious attempt even to hurt themselves or take their lives on the issues where they feel frustrated and can not find a solution.
Secondly, our class routines need to be
planned in such a way that the child finds them appealing and unputdownable. The teachers’ learning should commensurate with the requirements of this time. They should know what is happening in the world so that the students can relate it to them and approach to them to find the solutions of their dilemmas and learn how to cross their stumbling blocks successfully.
Just to conclude my point , I will say that the duty of today’s adult, specially of the teacher is more demanding and challenging where he/ she has to act as a facilitator, educator, physiologist, friend, guide and a learner to help the child when he is not willing to share his problems and living in his own world. The teacher is required to come down to that child’s level to help him live in the world full of challenges with collaboration, reflect on his thoughts and actions, become globally aware, adaptable and along with all these qualities rise as a responsible and effective member of society where he can support others who look towards him.
