In the book, people are unable to afford power. In this world power is everything because most everyone needs to access the virtual world of the OASIS for school and work to earn money. When the OASIS was originally developed, people neglected their jobs in the real world and caused the economy to crumble. The cheapest way to live is in a place called “the Stacks”(pgs 20-22) in the cities. These are a bunch of trailers stacked one on top of the other. Because they are stacked they can fit more people into a smaller area.

Do work requirements help lift people out of poverty?Summary

Individuals have an easier time staying out of poverty than a family due to the lower cost as there is only one person to feed. As a result they don’t have to work as much compared to a person who has a family to feed. The article said there are more children working to help with income for the family. A number of people who are below the poverty line are working and they are going to school so that they can have a possibility of getting a job that pays better. Another factor is that many people are working part time, want to work full time, but were not hired for full time work and at a minimum wage to get above the poverty requires 50 weeks of work which mean full time would be required. https://www.pbs.org/newshour/economy/making-sense/do-work-requirements-help-lift-people-out-of-poverty

Book: Even with jobs moving to the OASIS, poverty continued because they didn’t do anything to help the real world. Instead of improving the real world people spent their money on more time in the OASIS and equipment for the OASIS.

This book is a novel because, in the book it has a degree of realism, you see it in the character and his actions within the book. The character Wade Watts is a teanager who plays a video game to escape his real life.

“OK, on second thought, maybe honesty isn’t the best policy after all. Maybe it isn’t a good idea to tell a newly arrived human being that he’s been born into a world of chaos, pain, and poverty just in time to watch everything fall to pieces. I discovered all of that gradually over several years, and it still made me feel like jumping off a bridge.

Luckily, I had access to the OASIS, which was like having an escape hatch into a better reality”. (pg. 18)
