Linking and exclusivity is what gives music a recognizable, familiar feel, while also achieving a unique sound. Linking as described by Ratliff is the concept of familiar repetitiveness creating a comfortable feel for what the listener is hearing. Linking creates flow between rhythms and makes way for musical patterns everyone knows and loves. Exclusivity uses these patterns in a new and exciting way. Mastering these tools pushes the boundaries of music and creates new genres for listeners to enjoy.
