This area in Virginia was inhabited by Native American tribes who spoke an Eastern Algonquian language known to linguists as Virginia Algonquian.


Reports suggest that more words have been borrowed into English from Virginia Algonquian than from any other Native American language.


A large amount of words borrowed were related to food. Examples include hominy, ‘ground maize kernels'.

Other words borrow include opossum and raccoon.
