It is always a complete sentence that includes both the topic and the idea that the author wishes to express about the topic. The main idea is the "key concept" being expressed, and it can be supported by telling how, what, when, where, why, how much, or how many.  Locating the topic, main idea, and supporting details helps you understand the point(s) the writer is attempting to express. Identifying the relationship between these will increase your comprehension. 

Example a:
Topic: cats 
possible main ideas about cats: 
  • Cats are usually very clean animals. 
  • Cats have very expressive faces. 
  • Cats are very adaptable animals 
 
Compare your ideas with those of another student. You probably have some different ideas. In fact, for every topic there are many possible main ideas. The choice of a main ide depends on what the author wants to say about the topic.

Example b: 
choose one of these topics and write a main idea sentence about it. 
  • My favorite food. 
  • Growing older 
  • Travel

Gold never needs to be polished and will remain beautiful forever. For example, a Macedonian coins remains as antarnished today as the day it was made 25 centuries ago. Another important characteristic of gold is its usefulness to industry and science. For many years, it has been used in hundreds of industrial applications, such as photography, and dentistry. In conclusion, gold is treasured not only for its beauty but also for its utility.

note: The main idea is a key concept. The main idea is the most important piece of information the author wants you to know about the concept of that paragraph.
