The post should inlcude:

1. TITLE of your chosen project. If the title does not identify the project, please add up to 3 sentences to provide a brief explanation (e.g. type of activities involved).

2. Briefly identify the intended PURPOSE of your project. The aim here is to answer the question 'Why undertake the project?' Note: you may find it helpful to think about the change your project will achieve (e.g. improved access to a facility) rather than just the object/s to be delivered (e.g. building a ramp for wheelchair users). Max. 2 sentences.

3. Your view of the key CHALLENGES for your project in terms of sustainability. (One sentence for each challenge.)

The aim is to identify and consider the communities who may have an interest in, or be affected by, your project and who have not been identified from a financially-driven perspective.

You may identify non-human stakeholders, such as biodiversity and natural resources. Consider how will such stakeholders can be represented in the decision making for your project.

For each stakeholder, consider their likely perpsective/s on your project. You may find it helpful to think about how the outcome of your project may be perceived.

Develop a perspective map for your project, in the style of the Offshore windfarm model shown below.

The aim is to connect the Project with Results, Use and Benefits (PRUB) to better understand the risks and opportunities.

For each result, identify the USE that is expected. You may find it helpful to think about Kipling's 'serving men' - what, why, when, how, where & who.

Finally, identify the BENEFITS that are expected to accrue from the use.

Build a PRUB model to illustrate the logic connecting the project, results, use and benefits. (See transport fleet upgrade example shown below.)

Note: several iterations may be required, and new projects may be identified, before the logic is complete.

Challenges for this project I think would be things like:

Lead time for delivery of recycling containers.

Storage space to house the containers.

Wrong amount of containers being purchased or incorrect disposal collections.

Purchasing an ineffective product or choosing an unsuitable disposal company.

Staff putting waste into the wrong receptacle.

Poor sighting of containers.

Poor budget management.

Inadequate health & safety guidelines.

Rather than putting all old IT equipment to the local dump look into ways that it can be re-purposed. Focus on selling or donating equipment.

This will help the organisation with its green initiatives.

Challenges

Legal / Compliance - ensure equipment are securely wiped when needed. Legal agreement for equipment if it develops a fault etc.

Identification of old equipment - Different equipment have different life cycles this needs to be identified.

Logistics/Location - Orkney being a small group of islands reduces the options for selling or donating and there is a cost to transporting equipment across to the Scottish Mainland.

Storage space also is an issue. Storing equipment for disposal it doesn’t matter if the equipment is stacked or stored in a dry location.

Challenges with this project is project creep which can cause delays, managing stakeholder expectations and change management.   

The biggest challenge for this project is maintaining public access to the are while also safely carrying out demolition. Another big challenge is the lack of access for plant and machinery. The biggest challenge is carrying out this while trying to reduce the carbon impact.
