Is de-influencing just influencing? Ep 7 on Sustain This Podcast

Podcast -> Sustain This

Host -> Alyssa, a sustainable stylist; Christina, a shopaholic turned minimalist-ish; and Cena, a color consultant and slow fashion style coach.

-> De-influencing emerged as a trend in early 2023, mainly on TikTok. It’s the opposite of influencing, where content creators advise against buying certain products instead of encouraging purchases and explaining why.

-> Initially, de-influencing discouraged overconsumption, encouraging people to buy less. However, it has evolved into another marketing strategy (e.g., "buy this, not that").

-> Social media amplifies consumption by creating a sense of urgency around products, often through alarmist language ("You need this now!"). This leads to disappointment when products don’t deliver.

-> The hosts discuss how we often buy into the promises associated with a product (e.g., confidence, success) rather than the product itself.

-> Content from 2015-2016 featured beauty gurus with massive makeup collections, and it normalized excessive consumption for viewers.

This led to unhealthy shopping habits for some viewers, who became accustomed to buying many items on one shopping trip.

The reality is that most people can’t use up such large quantities of makeup before they expire.

-> While de-influencing started as a pushback against overconsumption, it has now been co-opted as a new marketing tool.

Influencers now use de-influencing to seem more authentic, ironically becoming a strategy to gain trust and continue selling products.

This evolution has disheartened some people, as even authenticity is being commodified.

-> As consumers, people may develop unrealistic expectations for products, hoping they will achieve more than is realistically possible.

Sometimes, trying things for oneself is better than relying solely on reviews or influencer opinions.

In my opinion, fundraising for adoption can be a positive and practical approach when done thoughtfully. Adoption is a wonderful way to provide a child with a loving home, but the process can be prohibitively expensive, especially for families with average incomes. Fundraising allows the community to come together and support the family, helping to reduce financial barriers and make adoption more accessible.

However, it's important for the process to be approached sensitively, ensuring that the focus remains on the well-being of the child rather than the financial aspect. As long as the fundraising is done with transparency and respects the dignity of the adoption journey, it can be a meaningful way to help families achieve their dream of providing a stable, loving environment for a child in need.

"Yes, We Can": Entrepreneurs often take on opportunities outside their core competencies. A Brazilian entrepreneur, Arnold Correia, continually reinvented his business by saying “yes” to customer requests that expanded his business beyond its original scope.

Problem-First, Not Product-First: Entrepreneurs focus on solving problems rather than creating new products for the sake of it. Jonathan Thorne, for example, solved the issue of surgical forceps sticking to tissue, targeting a narrow problem that led to business success.

Beg, Borrow, but Don’t Steal: It is normal to find entrepreneurs, when they are in need of some asset, they are able borrow it. In WMPT he gets to the heart of what ordinary people think about social and political issues. Whatever the contentious subject – he’ll be honest and blunt, but without being a pain.

While it has made elections more accessible and candidates more scrutinized by the public, it has also prioritized image over issues, altering voter perceptions and transforming national politics into a contest of appearances rather than ideals.

Microsoft Unveils First Quantum Computing Chip

Quantum computing has the potential to solve complex problems in fields like chemistry, material science, and quantum physics that are currently impossible for classical supercomputers. It could lead to breakthroughs such as self-healing materials, catalysts to eliminate microplastics, and solutions for "forever chemicals."

Microsoft has developed a new quantum chip using a topological phase of matter, discovered through 20 years of research. This chip can potentially hold a million qubits on a single chip, making it more scalable and reliable than other quantum computing approaches, such as Google's, which require larger physical setups.

Quantum computing is expected to become commercially viable within years, not decades, with applications in chemistry and materials science leading the way. Microsoft believes its approach, which integrates quantum computing with AI and existing data center infrastructure, will provide a competitive edge in the race for quantum supremacy, particularly against global competitors like China.
