1. Life's vision of the American Century was realised to a certain extent by a small minority of the population - white middle class. However, for ethnic minorities that reality was far from the truth.

2&3. Although there was progress in some areas of society such as that of Civil Rights and economic matters (civil rights act of 1964 and rising employment and GDP) they were largely overshadowed by the large inequality and wars that existed in the period. There were still inequalities within the civil rights and women as well as the failure of the Vietnam war and the tensions of the Cold war.

To what extent was WWII a 'good' war? Who benefitted and who did not? Why?

- Economy- wages for industrial workers rose 50%, farmers income rose 200%, rise of consumerism and affluent society (but not everyone was), the war got America out of the Depression more successfully than New Deal, war caused debt for future generations
- Employment- Many jobs were created on the home front: men, women, African Americans, end of war lead to many white males taking jobs back, could be argued however that the war gave minorities more opportunities, 'conditioned'- they had experienced aspects of equality and wanted this further thereafter
- Japanese Americans- Internment, stigmatised due to their race
- World Power- The war catapulted America onto the world stage
- Science- Atomic bomb kills thousands of innocents, catalyst of the Cold War, 'Arms Race'

Reasons why it was opposed -
It was far away, and largely inconsequential to the American people. People therefore questioned what they were actually fighting for.

Slient majority were overshadowed by the actions of protestors -
There was a silent majority as the protests did not work, so there must have been someone supporting the war

The consequences -
There was a generational and societal divide. The escalation of the war was a key reason for Johnson's downfall.
And pulling out under Nixon was the beginning of a conservative wave in American politics.
