Welcome to Team Owltonomous! We are students from Florida Atlantic University’s SeaTech campus in Dania Beach, where we tackle maritime engineering challenges through cutting-edge research in autonomy. Our team applies Ocean Engineering knowledge to develop Autonomous Surface Vehicles (ASVs) that navigate and solve complex tasks on the water. A key part of our work is competing in RobotX, an international competition that pushes the boundaries of maritime autonomy. Through this, we continue to innovate and advance solutions for real-world ocean challenges.

Testing the improved Propulsion System

Last weekend, Team Owltonomous successfully tested our improved propulsion system by adding two bow thrusters, enhancing the vessel’s robustness and creating a more overactuated system for precise control. These upgrades significantly improved maneuverability, particularly in challenging conditions. During the tests, we also trialed the station-keeping functionality in autonomous mode, where the USV maintained its position with impressive accuracy, marking a key milestone in our development efforts.

Remus Research at the Ocean

Today, we successfully tested our REMUS Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (AUV) at the open ocean as part of our ongoing research efforts! 🚤🔬 The REMUS, designed for deep-sea exploration and data collection, was deployed to test its navigation, magnetometer mapping, and data acquisition capabilities in real-world ocean conditions.

ROV Experience at MTS Workshop - Northern Michigan College

What a fantastic start! On Day 1 of the MTS Workshop, Xavier Vicent kicked off the week by diving deep into the world of Remotely Operated Vehicles (ROVs), thanks to the generous MTS scholarship. 🤖🌊

The day was packed with hands-on sessions, where Xavier and fellow participants learned how to operate ROVs, explore their control systems, and understand their real-world applications in underwater exploration and research. From maneuvering the vehicles to troubleshooting in challenging underwater environments, it was an incredible introduction to marine technology.

Sonar Experience at MTS Workshop - Northern Michigan College

Day 2 at the MTS Workshop and Xavier Vicent continues to make waves! As part of the program funded by the MTS scholarship, today’s focus was on sonar technology. 📡🌊

Participants dove into the fundamentals of sonar systems, learning how they are used for underwater mapping, object detection, and environmental data collection. Xavier gained hands-on experience with sonar devices, working on real-time data interpretation and understanding how these systems are crucial for marine exploration and research.

Vision Based USV Tracking

Exciting progress at SeaTech today! We conducted a field trial using LiDAR to capture high-precision data as two WAM-V USVs (Wave Adaptive Modular Vessels) autonomously tracked each other in real-time. 🚤🚤🔦

This test is part of our ongoing research to enhance tracking and navigation algorithms for autonomous systems. By utilizing LiDAR, we’re obtaining detailed 3D mapping of the environment, allowing the USVs to detect and follow one another with greater accuracy, even in challenging marine conditions.

Testing Station-Keeping for RobotX

Today’s focus: fine-tuning the PID gains of our WAM-V USV for enhanced station-keeping performance as we gear up for the RobotX Competition! 🚤🏁

By carefully adjusting the Proportional, Integral, and Derivative (PID) gains, we’ve optimized the vessel’s ability to hold its position against varying environmental forces like wind and currents. These precise control adjustments are key to ensuring the WAM-V stays stable and responsive, even in the toughest conditions.

Successful First Flight of Holybro X500 V2: Manual and Autonomous System Testing

Today marked the successful first test flight of the Holybro X500 V2 drone. We conducted both manual flight and tested the drone's auto takeoff and auto land functionalities. The UAV performed flawlessly, responding well to manual controls and executing autonomous takeoff and landing as expected. This marks a major milestone in our testing process, as we now have a solid foundation for future autonomous operations.

The next step in our testing will focus on autonomous flight, where we will further refine the control systems and navigation algorithms to enable fully autonomous missions. The data gathered from today’s flight will be invaluable for optimizing the drone’s performance in future tests.

Autonomous Racquetball Shooter Completed!

We have successfully completed the racquetball shooter for RobotX 2024! It is now integrated with ROS2, allowing us to autonomously trigger the shooter and adjust its speed as needed. Excited to see this feature in action during our tests!

Buoy Navigation Test for RobotX

Today, we took the WAMV out on the water and successfully tested it autonomously navigating between a gate of buoys! Using YOLOv9 for camera fusion and advanced LiDAR processing, we were able to detect both the type of buoys and their position relative to the WAMV.

This is a major milestone as we gear up for the RobotX competition in just two weeks! 🏁💪
