As I turned and watched him go, a tear rolled down my cheek. In the brief time I had known him, I realized there was something I liked about this lad. I reddied myself for bed, turned out the lights, and went to sleep. As I slept I dreamed a dream: a young Luella had just lost her parents and was left all alone. With no place to go, she wandered the streets. She too had tried to snatch people’s belongings, and for a time she was successful. Until one day, she tried to steal eggs from the farmer down the road but was caught. The kind farmer and his wife did not press charges, rather they gave her a place to stay and work to do. My alarm clock interrupted this dream, and as I opened my eyes, I realized: Rodger was going to be okay. At the beginning, Rodger’s goals were to steal Mrs. Jones’s pocketbook, so he could buy a pair of shoes. Mrs. Jones’s goals were not to press charges against Rodger, but to teach him a lesson and extend kindness.

"Do they develop or learn an important lesson by the end of the story? If so, how?"

I think the lesson that the woman learned was that you never know what someone is going through. The boy did something wrong, but he was not taken care of well and he was in need of shoes.

The lesson the boy learned was to ask before taking. He also learned that not everyone he tries to take something from is going to be as nice as the lady.
