I think this picture perfect illustrates that one test does not fit all. As illustrated in the picture, everyone must pass the test by climbing the tree. The monkey has the obvious advantage because he is built for it, but the others will have a harder time or not be able to do it at all. Gloria Ladson-Billings says the same is true when teaching children of different culture. If you try to teach every student based on one thing such as culture there will be many students left behind

It is important that every teacher keeps their students engaged in the classroom or you will have students struggling to retain the material. Landson-Billings said that a great teacher is one the will take different route to ensure all their students grow and develop properly. Differentiated Instruction is something all teachers should practice in the classroom on a regular bases so they do not end up like this classroom

Culture in Curriculum

A great teacher should always embrace a students culture and use it to help guide you in bettering that student and other students. We can teach our students about this new culture in our classroom to broaden their minds. We can also teach our students about existing culture in our classroom that they may not know the facts about. When you bring a students culture into your curriculum is helps to "transcend the negative affects of the dominant culture" as said by Ladson-Billings

This picture shows the teachers sitting with her students where they are all on the same level. Gloria says in her book that a great teacher is more like a coach. They care about the whole team and not just a few select people. Teachers should care about the success of the whole class and not leave any student behind. A coach much like a teacher will show the children a new skill or material and then step aside on the sidelines cheering them on to show off their new skills.

Lack of Diversity

There has always been a lack of diversity in children's literature. The Dream keepers says that in order for African American students to be more successful in the future they should be exposed to diverse literature especially literature about their own culture. If a teachers wishes to have the best classroom for all cultures, they should make sure the classroom library represents all cultures equally.
