"Just Say No" was an advertising campaign, part of the U.S war on drugs. This campaign was created to discourage children from engaging in recreational drug use.

AIDS Epidemic, Support Groups, and Activism

The AIDS epidemic in the 1980s, although it intensified the antigay rhetoric of the New Right, also stimulated further organizing within the gay community. AIDS made political mobilization a matter of life and death. With a large majority of the cases striking male homosexuals, the gay community created a host of organizations, such as the Gay Men's Health Crisis in New York City, to provide services and assistance to those infected. Local and national gay civil rights groups also grew in size and number, as the community sought to increase funding for research and education and to win protection against discrimination. A personal and social tragedy of immense proportions, AIDS paradoxically strengthened the political arm of the gay movement.

In 1980, the Republican Party removed support for the ERA from its platform. Despite increased civil disobedience, including demonstrations, marches, and hunger strikes, advocates were unable to get an additional three states to ratify.

Pro-Life Movement

Women's Rights

During the early 1980’s women’s rights activists worked to obtain ratification of the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA). Although Congress had passed the amendment in 1972, it had not been ratified, or approved by three-fourths of the states. They only obtained 35 of 38 states. After this failure more women began to fun for office and by the later 1980’s were more present in office.
