Just recently, I have read about Singapore's return to tighter measure under Phase 2. Due to the emerging several clusters linked to the Jurong Fishery Port, especially in wet markets and hawker food centers, it is most likely that the COVID-19 infections are going to rise sharply at the current rate of transmission. In addition, unlike the KTV cluster, which had spread first among younger segments of the population, the current wave of infections affects “a wider spectrum of the population including many seniors”, said MOH. When I read the news on the heightened measures, I was concerned for the older generation. It was also known that many seniors had refused to take the vaccine, this brought more worry to me as I wondered what would happen to the seniors if the transmission rate rose significantly. Despite the worry, I felt safe and blessed to be living in a country where the government is able to ensure the safety and well-being of every citizen.

Something that I have read recently in a blog was a bout Cameron Herrin. Recently, swarms of social media accounts have recently been pushing for a reduction in Cameron Herrin's 24-year sentence in the 2018 deaths of a mother and her daughter after a street racing crash. On May 23, 2018, the police announced the arrest of Cameron Herrin and his friend in the deadly crash that took 24-year-old Jessica and her 21-month old daughter, Lillia’s lives. Jessica was pushing Lillia across the street in a stroller at the time of the crash. Investigators said that Cameron Herrin was driving in the outside lane closest to the sidewalk and struck the mother and daughter. In April 2021, after a 3 year trial, Cameron Herrin was sentenced to more than two decades in prison. Later, his sentencing video became a hot topic as his looks garnered him female fans who demanded Cameron’s sentence to be reduced. In my opinion, Cameron’s sentence being reduced just because of his good looks does not sit right with me. He should be punished for his reckless and ignorant behaviour, and causing the death of two innocent people’s life. This is unfair to loved ones of Jessica and Lillia, and the other prisoners.

I think that the students may be reading about an article in the straits time newspaper. Sometimes, during ace classes, we would receive such straits times newspapers and our teacher would discuss some issues mentioned in the straits times newspaper. For example, recently, we have just received a straits times newspaper in celebration of racial harmony day. The newspaper focuses on ‘flourishing in a shared space’ which is very relevant to what’s happening in Singapore recently. It brought up some cases such as a Ngee Ann Poly lecturer who made racist remarks to interracial couple or a viral video of a women banging a gong when neighbour was performing prayer rituals. These articles enhance our general knowledge and allow us to know more about what’s happening in Singapore. Other than the straits times newspaper, the reader’s digest book which is in the form of a magazine is very beneficial for us. It has different sections such as health, education, fashion and food. It also discusses different topics during different months! It definitely broadened my horizons and made me more interested about reading since it also has some jokes and games.

I think that it is better to read online than reading from a book. Having just a device to read a book from is more convenient than carrying a ton of books, especially if I am travelling overseas and I don’t want to bring unnecessary weight with me. The application in the device can be customized to my personal preference such as the brightness, colour, font and letter sizing. This will make reading more enjoyable and engaging to me and to people who find the plain old white to be boring. Hence encouraging people to read more.

The application provides a larger selection of books of different genres ready on hand, and provides a function to bookmark a specific page. I can also find books that are no longer available in bookshops or the libraries. To be able to read more books from other countries, I can better understand cultures and the different writing styles. I personally do read some books online as it is much more accessible for someone like me who is constantly on the phone. I can access it on the way to school or on the train.

However, I do think that reading a book from time to time is good. Sometimes when you are reading online, you may receive notifications from other applications which are a distraction. Also, staring at a screen for long periods of time can severely damage our eyes and worsen our vision. Long screen time causes our eyes to be dry and uncomfortable. Reading a book serves as an opportunity for our eyes to take a break from all the blue light. Personally I have and read more physical books at home. I find myself reading for hours and fully immersed in the story. The feel of holding and turning the page of the book and the smell of it gives me a sense of calmness and I can focus better at reading and understanding the overall plot of the story.

In conclusion, e-books bring many benefits that fit our current lifestyle and busy schedule. However, once in a while, reading a physical book can be relaxing and allow us to stay away from all the hustle and bustle of the digital world. I personally would pick a physical book, it puts our mind in a trance-like state that is similar to meditation and brings us to deep relaxation and inner calmness.

Something that I have read recently is the article about the River Valley High murder on straits times. The assailant was a 16 year old boy and he had murdered a fellow schoolmate with a axe. The victim was a 13 year old boy and he was murdered when he walked into the toilet. The murderer is allegedly mentally unstable, and this caused him to decide to buy an axe online and murder the unassuming secondary 1 student in the toilet. To tell you the truth, when I saw the news article, I really could not believe my eyes as I had never heard of such an incident happening in Singapore ever before. I still remember thinking to myself on whether I was really reading news on Singapore and not any other country. Seriously, Singapore, a country which many hold regard to as one of the safest in the world, for an incident like this to happen was really an eye opener as to how safe we truly are here. What's worse about this story is that it was an act committed by a secondary 4 student inside the school compound. The same school compound in which those River Valley High students regarded as their second home. "Home" might I add is meant to be a safe and comfortable space and not a place where you have to worry on your safety to the point where you wonder whether you may be taking your last breath in that home itself, taken by one which you would've called your senior, peer or even friend. In conclusion, this news article brought me to a realization that you can never be too careful on your surroundings and that you should treasure the life you have now as you really never know when your life might just flash in front of your eyes and leaving you in a world of empty, dark, nothingness.

I don't think that it is better for people to read, but then to be online this is because ask a person is able to touch and use the five senses to understand and feel the story. But it may sound a little weird, but I feel that one who wants to be able to comprehend and 'feel' the story, it's much better than swiping through the phone to read. personally I do prefer to physical instead of reading online, this is because I'm able to flip through pages. And if I find a sentence I really like I found the connection to words, i'll use my pencil to mark down or even tag the pages. therefore having able to be collecting and holding onto a physical book is much more valuable than reading online.

Additionally, I feel that reading from physical books instead of online books is better is because one might forget about the existence of the work of art written down onto a book. This could be the case due to the fact that after reading the book on the website or app, the story is then neglected and 'chucked to a side', left to rot and be forgotten at the depths of history section. I have had a friend that reads online and when i ask her about a story that she had read a long time ago, she had actually forgotten that she had read the story! It really shocked me that she had forgotten that she had read the book and, when i compare my love for reading physical books, i find that i am able to remember better than her. I can even remember the whole plot of a storybook that i've read 5 years ago!

Overall, i feel that feeling physical books are better than reading online books is your better able to comprehend and remember the plot of the story better as compared to tapping on the screen to read the story. However, to me, it boils down to the individual themselves if they prefer to read new app or website or even on the kindle, the electronic storybook device. If one prefers to read from the latter, it is their choice and their choice alone.

Something I have read recently is about this young 8 year old child from Bihar becoming a serial killer. It happened in June 2007 but was brought to light last month because of a woman called Chunchun Devi who lived in the same hamlet in Bihar as Amardeep Sada. She said that she’d left Khushboo in someone’s care at the local primary school while she went about her day and when she came back to pick her daughter up but she was missing. The village she was living in was small and she heard rumours about Sada and his behaviour so it didn't take long for her to find out who took her daughter. However, the police didn't believe her because Sada was only 8 years old at that time. A young child can't possibly be a murderer and it took much convincing for the police to agreed to summon Amardeep Sada and his family to the police station. When they asked Sada about Khushboo, the daughter, the young Sada answered that he not only knew where she was but also it was him who killed and hidden her corpse. The police were shocked to hear it from him and asked Sada to bring them to the body. He also confessed that Khushboo wasn't his first victim, he also murdered his infant sister and his cousin and his family didn't expose him. A psychoanalyst was later summoned to examine Amarjeet. He concluded that the young boy was a psychopath who lacked remorse and had a liking for inflicting pain on other people.

After reading this news, I was flabbergasted and didn't know if it was even possible, how a young boy can turn into a cold blooded killer. It scares me to know such things do exist because when we think of young children, the first thing we will relate to innocent and it is not something that happens normally.

I am of the opinion that it is better for people to read from a book because reading online can become very distracting and reading online may be harmful to the eyes.
Currently, there are many devices in the world for online browsing. Since most devices used to read online are mobile phones or the laptop, it is no certain that other functions can become a distraction for many of us if we lack self discipline. If we read an a physical book, chances of being distracted might decrease, because there may be nothing else we can do.
A reason why I think reading from a physical real books is
vastly superior is due to the realistic reading experience real books provide. Readers are able to feel the progress as they feel the upcoming pages progressively get fewer and fewer. This can make readers feel contentment and also motivated readers to continue reading to reach the final page. Adding on, buying or borrowing physical books help to support the writer’s business. Physical books must be paid to read but some books found in PDF forms online might be illegally shared and thus, lesser people will buy the book and just read online illegally, causing writers to earn lesser profits.
However, there are still exclusive devices such as E-book for reading online. Since their primary function is for reading, it is better to be used to prevent being distracted by using phones or laptops. Due to the most online reading being done on multipurpose devices, I am of the opinion reading physical books is better.
