I have heard a uncommon amount of opinions lately about the crisis in education. I went all of high school not thinking American education was in crisis until my horizon widened to understand underlying issues in our public schools. The expectations of our schools hinders necessary change and puts blame where it does not need to be. I think that we should put No Child Left Behind behind us because it seems like there is a lack of focus on the future from Ravitch and more pointing to what has happened in the past that was wrong. What can we do instead of testing at high stakes? What can we do to compete with countries around the globe education wise? What can we borrow from them in a realistic and reasonable manner? Clearly Ravitch sees that there are problems, knows what she believes, but I do not know what she supports that includes progress.

I think that the American education system is extremely complex, but in the most basic way it could be considered in a crisis. I never felt like I was not getting anything out of my classes in high school. When I took standardized tests in elementary school or middle school, there was never a bunch of stress put on them. We were told to try our best and not worry about it. I do not know if that how it was for everyone at the schools I went to, but I do not remember anyone freaking out over them. I agree with Ravitch when she says that we should have testing, but we should not have high stakes testing. I think evaluating our students is obviously an important thing to do, but having students spend hours on a test takes away classroom learning time. The results for these tests also do not typically come in until after it is too late for a teacher to make huge changes to their classroom plan. If these tests benefitted students and teachers more, a lot of problems could be fixed. However, at the current time, America's education system is in crisis because policy makers do not seem to understand that when a student does not have their basic needs met, there is no way for them to learn effectively.

How can you close a school based on test scores? I was told when I was in high school that some of the information on the standardized tests I probably wouldn't know, because we had not covered that in class yet. Looking back on that then why on god's green earth did they give us the test???? If they know that we are going to not know the information needed to pass why are they giving it to us??? If that is the case with all tests how can you close a school based off of those scores???? I understand why they test kids, but I don't understand there method of doing it.

I do think that there is a crisis in education, but not one that can be solved easily or by any one thing. Like we discussed ion class this week, it is a wicked problem.I think that testing does need to happen so that we can have a sense of what our kids are doing right, but the pressures that come with these standardized tests currently need to be relaxed. There is no need to shut down schools because of these scores. The scores should point us toward the areas that need to be fixed, not tel us what school to close.

After watching this video, it is clear that Ravitch believes that the public educational system is "under attack." She provides a few examples of laws, such as NCLB, that are destroying the school system. For example, testing is not teaching students how to properly preform, as it is too competitive and exact. Additionally, the results of poor test scores is leading to schools being shut down, teachers being fired, and students not being taught.

I never thought that we were having a difficulty in our education system. I believed that students who didn't care didn't hurt teachers. Now, with NCLB, those teachers are being hurt because of the students failing the class. With NCLB, we are simply testing students and teaching them to only take these tests and to not be creativity. NCLB has had such a negative emphasis on our educational system, and Ravitch said that she used to support it but does not anymore.

I think the vast majority of educated people would agree that No Child Left Behind (NCLB) was detrimental to our public education system and did nothing to really improve it but the problem is that we still have not seen any changes. Every Student Succeeds, which was passed by the Obama administration, was largely the same except that it removed the punishments of NCLB.

Ive known our eductation system has problems. Laws such as NCLB have put the education system under attack. People are now trying to fix the education system with quick fixes, but it is no longer a simple problem.

I do think that our education system could be in a greater condition than it is now. The issue is, is that there isn't one problem that can be fixed. Or there isn't one solution for this great problem. Like discussed in class, it is a bunch of wicked problems. Each issues leads to another new issue, and it will take generations to solve.
