1- When I chose a car: the time and route differ from using a motorcycle or on foot.

What are some of the learning “take-aways” from this exercise?

Takeaways From Our Experiences using google Maps.

The take-away is the main point of something, like a lesson or presentation, to learn and remember. An example of the take away is when your boss gives a 20 minute lecture but at the end says "so, basically just remember if you are late you are fired."

1- Google Maps are a fun and visual way to help students understand geography concepts, map reading, - location, and distance measurement. Make learning experiences fun and visual way for students.

2- Besides using Google Maps to teach the fundamentals of mapping, like latitude and longitude, you can inspire students to investigate the world and to think spatially.

3- Using different routes make time and distance change, which means when we change the way of teaching the final learning experience, learning outcomes may change.

4- Differentiation: Focus on student actions. Keep the emphasis on learning by doing, not learning from instruction. In the moment where a student gets “stuck,” is when learning is happening.

5- Provide problems, situations, and scenarios rich with decision-making. (different routes make different decision making.) Educators should work to create powerful models of learning that are rich with decision-making, not memorization. Students should have to think, reason,
and problem-solve time and time again while receiving feedback on the choices that they are making.

Get as close as possible to instant informative feedback. Students should explore, make decisions and then get individualized and immediate feedback on that decision to learn from their mistakes and develop their own understanding.

I found 3 possible routes to my work.

1. It will take 21 mins.

2. It will take 25 mins.

3. It will take 32 mins
Of course having different choices that tell me how to reach my destination in a shorter time and avoiding the crowded streets, this will help me choose the better route.
This is very close to when the teacher provides her students with different tools in order to choose the best one that helps them inquire and learn about the given topic.

What are some of the learning “take-aways” from this exercise?

I believe that it is all about decision making. When your goals are clear to you, making decisions becomes easier. Goals help you establish your priorities, guide your decision-making, and affect your evaluation of your success.

Educators should work on skills (ATLs) to release students to being proactive changemakers. They should provide problems, situations, and scenarios rich with decision making. Skills enable Agency and they lead to Action.

The best decision makers are people who can combine logic, problem analysis, and intuition to come up with the correct decision.

Being a good listener. Good decision makers must be able to hear and take into account other people’s opinions when making decisions.
·Having a clear set of priorities. Decision makers must know their priorities or values in order to choose the correct path.
Being open-minded: Good decision makers are open to other people’s views and ways of thinking rather than being stuck in one way of doing things.
Being flexible and willing to change. A good decision maker is open to new or alternative ways of doing things that may work out better in the end.

I used Google maps to check my way to school, it gave me 3 routes that are different in the distance and the time of arrival.
I usually choose the most convenient route either if it is the fastest long route if I want to arrive early or the shortest route if I don't want to drive for long distance.
Some learning "take-aways" from this exercise:
-I use different range of skills during my daily trip to decide which route should I take.
-I use my research skills to collect data and I integrate technology when I use Google maps application.
-I use critical thinking skills to analyze and evaluate which route is more convenient to me in this specific situation.
-I use my self management skills to manage time and tasks effectively.
-Moreover this exercise reminds me when we communicate our learning objectives to our learners and make them clear ,then we start to plan and differentiate the learning process according to the students needs, learning styles and preferences to make sure that each and every student will reach the targeted learning objectives according to their own pace.
-Our role as teachers is to facilitate and guide our learners with the resources needed , technological tools, provoking questions that encourage them to inquire in a well-planned authentic learning experience which is student-centered.
-It gives us the importance of interpreting the visual ,audio and oral communications to take a decision based on our conceptual understandings.

i found three possible routes to my place

i will choose the faster and safeties route
also in our field how teacher and students choose their routs to achieve their goals . so we must to learn how to used atl skills and asses our goals all time and reflect . if the route is wrong we have to change the route or solve the problem in the same route to reach the main goal

I used Google Map in order to reach my goal (the place that I selected in order to reach it) and found 3 ways when use my car

The first: it takes 21 minutes

And the second: It takes 32 minute
the third:26 minis
I chose the shorter road that is far from congestion and has bridges to reach faster, so my direction changed for the easiest and thus changed my lane direction because I chose the easiest and fastest way for me.

_ In this activity I used research skills as well as self-management skills

So, as a teacher, I must guide the student before starting the search process, just as you did with us. You directed us using Google Map in order to reach the desired goal

I always use the quickest, easiest, and unhindered way to get there but if I find a problem on the road I must use another road that may be long and contain some obstacles to get to my work.
Some lessons learned from this exercise:
1-I use critical thinking skills to analyze and evaluate the most appropriate course of action for me in this specific situation.
2- I use my research skills in gathering data and integrating technology when using the Google Maps application.
This exercise brought to my attention the importance of setting a teacher goal before starting and integrating and evaluating ATL throughout the learning process if the route is wrong we have to change the route or solve the problem in the same route to reach the main goal

It has suggested 3 routes.
Generally, I will take the shortest as it's direct and and less time consuming.
But when I the factor of which time of the day I'm doing this ride interfere I may change my mind choosing the less traffic route even if it's longer and also if I need to pass by somewhere before reaching my destination I will change my route even if it would take more time depending on how important it is.

I used google map to find a way from my countryside to my home in the city

It gave me two routes

One of them is longer, but the road is paved to drive on, and the other is shorter, but more crowded and the road has some bumps.

I learn from this exercise that you need things to catch your goal like skills, tools and some recourses.

And that what exactly we need in our learning process with our students (specially with early years), give them a lot of tools and recourses and let them used their skills to decide from their perspective the suitable choice for them in different situations.

I used google map to find a way from my home to my work, it gives me three different routes in distance and time. I will take the safest and shortest route if this is possible at the same time but if not I will take the safest one because I prefer routes without obstacles.
I learned from this exercise:
1- I used many skills to think and make the right choice from many possible choices.
2- I used critical thinking skills to observe and analyze carefully in order to recognize problems.
3- I use my research skills in collecting data from every where I can reach.
4- I have learned that I must adapt to the circumstances around me and never stand in my place if I find any obstacle, but I continue to search, analyze and think to solve any problem facing me, best usage of my capabilities , but I do not surrender.
So, I want my students always to practice their skills and to be exposed to trial and error, but not to stop learning and practice the various skills for learning, but always learn from their mistakes and think about solving the problems they face and choose the tools and methods with which they can solve these problems.

I used Google Maps to find my way from my home to a famous food court in Cairo. It gave me two different ways to arrive. One will take 1hr and 23 mins and the other one will take 1 hr and 28 mins. on foot.
I will pick the shorter one. Not only because of the time, but also because it is safer for me while walking cause I won't cross many roads.
In this activity, I applied some of the ATLs:
1-I used analytic thinking skills to distinguish between the two options provided.
2-I used also some communication skills to communicate with people (pedestrians) to ask for directions cause sometimes Google Maps can't read changes occur in streets.
3-I used ICT and information literacy skills to check Google Maps for directions and to check the quality of this place through reviews posted online. Also, I made sure to check many resources to be certain that the information I got is true to a great extent.

I used google maps to find the way from home to work and It gave me three different routes. The first one will take 28 mins. , the second one will take 33 mins. , the other one will take 30 mins, but it is temporarily closed due to some reforms. I will choose the shortest route as it will save time and it is newly paved ,so it will be safer.
I learned from this activity :

I also learned to use skills and tools to choose the best for me and it's the same thing that can be done throughout the learning process as students can use some skills and tools to inquire and learn ,finding information needed using the best way.

Nouran El-Ghandour I’ve tried using Google maps to reach the nearest Mall and it gave me 2 routes that can guide me to my destination, I chose the fastest one. The learning “take-aways”-I believe this is a great introduction for how to plan our lessons using ATLs, we decide what Skills our students need to be equipped with and we tailor or plan the learning experience accordingly. For example: In order for students to be able to use their thinking skills, they will observe and interpret data carefully using the data that they will conduct from a survey. -Using technology may facilitate and enhance the learning experience.-Relating learning experiences to real life. -This activity needed several Skills from us as adults to be done, which make it possible to integrate several skills in one activity.

· As I live far from the school I choose it as a distination for this exercise. Google maps gave me 3 suggested routes(31 mins- 27 mins – 29 mins). It was really intersting that Google maps suggested the one that take 31 minutes as it avoids possible road closure although it consumes the most time.

· What are some of the learning “take-aways” from this exercise?

I believe that it is not only about the information we know which is here reflected by the duraton of the trip, sometimes there are unknow variables that we must keep in consediration while taking decisions.

Google map gave me two possible ways to arrive at Al Ahram Sporting Club from my home in Nasr City.

One will take 55 min. and the other will take 41 min. by car.

I will prefer the easiest and the shorter one because it will avoid traffic jams and bumpy roads, too.

This activity teaches me to be careful while deciding because here I used my research skills and the critical ones. These skills are vital in making decisions as they analyze data provided to come up with a suitable conclusion by the end.

Technology may affect our decisions as it plays a significant role in providing us with the updated information needed to make up our minds.

I believe this activity will be beneficial if we let the students handle it. They will define the importance of analyzing data and using them critically to come up with suitable solutions and move forward to the next step.

After using Google maps, it gave me mainly two different routes to arrive at The Shooting Club in ElDokki . Whether through the ring road which will take 42 minutes or the 6th of October bridge which will take from 36 to 37 minutes by car.
I would choose the shortest and the fastest option even if the difference between the two routes is only 6 minutes.
This kind of activity helps me to determine the importance of making decisions based on having and analyzing specific data or information.
Also, it highlights the importance of technology in our lives and it shows to what extent technology could be useful if we use it properly. As a result of that, technology facilitates the learning experience.
I am totally convinced that this activity is important as if we use activities from this kind with the students, it will flourish their research skills abilities which is very essential in the IB world because it is one of the ATLs.

Lessons learned from this exercise:
First: Determine the place I want to go to (determine the goal)
Second: Determine the information about the different ways to reach the place (the target).
Third: Choosing the appropriate path for each person.
Someone chooses the path of least distance and time.
Someone who chooses the road has no hindrances such as traffic problems.
Here someone chooses a road that has no big and rolls
(Different ways to reach the main goal)
So I used a different set of skills:
Research skills: Find the right path and tool to achieve my goal
Self-management skill: to manage time in completing tasks and reaching the goal.

My answer is we as educators need to create scenarios to enable the young learners to practise this skill. One example that I can think of that is-suitable for PYP1 would be through story telling- You ask the student to assume the characters in the story and ask them to role play and problem and decide the decision they would make-You will be surprised with the responses you will get. These simple practices can be built into daily lessons through establishing a clear structure and routine. I used Google maps to go to my old school. It suggested 3 routes. The first one of them takes 22 minutes, the second one takes 23 minutes, while the third one takes 24 minutes. I did not choose the shortest one because I know there is a construction area over there which I don't like to pass by. Also the road is somehow bumpy.
How did your route guidance change as a result of your choices?
My route guidance has changed depending on the means of transportation I am using. Using a car will take from 22 to 24 minutes only. However, using a bike takes like 1 hour and 12 minutes.
What are some of the learning “take-aways” from this exercise?
The take-aways from this exercise lie in begin with the end in mind, so you know how to plan accordingly. This means that teachers need to decide which skill to use to reach a certain objective. The skill here is being used a tool to help students internalize concepts.

I used google map to find a way from my home to my work (school) it gave me two different routes in distance and time of arrival, i always choose the one with no reds (traffic jam) even if it will take me longer to reach .
the ATLs:
1-I used analytic thinking and decision making skills to choose between the two routs .
2-I used also some communication skills to communicate uber or with the bus driver to help me if there is any sudden closure in one of the streets and that is because of the new roads and bridges .

I used Google maps to go to KidZania Cairo. It gave me 3 routes that can guide me to my destination. The first one of them will take 28 minutes, the second one will take 27 minutes while the third one will take 28 minutes.I chose the best route now (according to Google maps) in order to avoid road closure on Abd Elmegeid Selim street.

My route guidance has changed when I chose different means of transportation, routes or vehicles (to be more personalized).

What are some of the learning “take-aways” from this exercise?

· There are many ways to reach the same destination, choose the ones which suit your life’s conditions. (decision making)

Communication, decision making, critical and creative thinking are crucial life skills. We as educators have total responsibility in ensuring that we teach these skills to our students and design plans that focus on explicit teaching of these skills. Young students should also be given opportunities to parti
cipate in decision making by offering then opportunities that are appropriate for their age level through story telling, role play, and creating authentic life scenarios for them in the classroom.

The application offered me three different routes to the vet’s clinic. One long route that is very famous in having awful traffic jams. The second is 3 min shorter with side road that are usually locked due to the very narrow roads between buildings. The third rout is the one chosen by the application. It is a very fast one with wide streets but sometimes it takes me a shorter time to reach my destination. So, the estimated time put in consideration that the driver might use a reasonable speed, still less the allowed one.

My take-away from this exercise is that being totally aware of your students’ abilities as well as being aware of a variety of resources including technology will always help meet your students needs. It also assures meeting the chosen goals.

We have lots of tools that guide us nowadays more than before. The internet is getting more resourceful and more people are adding their learning and teaching experiences for the others. Which facilitates the teacher’s awareness and challenges them t learn more.
