When Hitler's army was attempting to invade the Soviet Union, they both fought for a city named Stalingrad (now called Volgograd) to gain or re-gain control. Eventually, the Soviet Union was able to surround one German army, attacking them and letting the German's resources dry. It led to the German army surrendering and a huge improvement in confidence. Hitler, suffering two losses by now, started losing control over the war which led to the downhill slope Nazi Germany had.
