Stevenson developed a desire to write early in his life, having no interest in running the family business of lighthouse engineering. This quote is important because it brings the crew together to sing a song that hits home for each and everyone of the pirates and it calms down the conflict in the story for a short period of time.

The characters involved in the novel are Jim, squire Trelawney, Dr. Livesey, Captain Smollett, and the rest of the crew. A way that the crew could solve this conflict is to lead Flint’s older crew to a different place of where the treasure is and then leave them there and go find it on their own. "You're either my ship's cook-and then you were treated handsome-or Cap'n Silver, a common mutineer and pirate, and then you can go hang!" (Ch. XX, p. 190). This quote is when Captain Smollett refuses to negotiate with Silver. By the captain refusing to negotiate with Silver it throws everyone for a loop on the ship and making it hard for the crew to work together which doesn’t help their adventure to finding the treasure. "Fetch aft the rum, Darby!" (Ch. XXXII, p. 316). These were the last words of Captain Flint, imitated by Ben Gunn. He imitated these words to scare the fellow pirates and i wouldn’t necessarily call this conflict but it does kind of turn the whole crew against Ben for imitating their former Captain. By Ben doing this it will slow down the chase for finding treasure island because the crew will be too scared to do anything. And knowing that Ben could possibly be the new Captain, no one wants to do anything wrong and possibly be kicked off the crew.
