I hope you are doing well. I wanted to share some thoughts I've been having as well as a few snapshots of my travels.

Paris was a mixture of delight and confusion. It seems a great place to walk around and think, and many famous people have done just that here. There is a French term for the thoughtful wanderer, the flaneur. I was very content as a flaneur, getting lost among the monochrome buildings and ducking into cafés for a respite from the rain. In the cafés, I watched the groups of varying ages and genders engage in lively debate. It made me wish I spoke the language. They took their time, picking at crumbs of food as they laughed and sparred. 

The art museums in Paris (and all over Europe, really) were a great place to challenge my thinking as well. It is so easy to misjudge a work of art, to brush it off and say "I could do that," but if you spend time with the works, you begin to understand why each piece is particularly special. I didn't need to spend much time with the wall-size Monets in the L'Orangerie to understand, however. The style Monet developed, known as impressionism, evokes a very simple and pure kind of beauty (sun dappling the lilypads) but also a poignancy in the impermanence of such beauty (the imprecise strokes, the blurred boundaries). 

Since I know you studied Art History, I'd love to know your thoughts on Monet. And I do hope you and I can experience Paris together one day.
