Forest Red R. Ibarrientos [TW06]

Personally, the biggest challenge in starting my college journey was going through the awkward transition period that comes with new beginnings. With me, major changes in my lifestyle and environment always result in me feeling anxious and uncomfortable about the new things I am to encounter. As an overthinker, this discussion helped me reaffirm the effectiveness of a practice I had already started a year ago. And that is Being Proactive. Earlier this year I had read about Stoicism which shares the same principles with being proactive. Both of these concepts state that in order to free yourself and continue progressing, you need to accept that you are not 100% in control of your life but you can still try your best to work on the parts of your life that you have full control of. In college, you might experience failure, you might end up embarrassing yourself, and you might end up wanting to give up. With that said, I am now fully aware that these negative experiences do not define me and I can use them to teach myself on how I can further improve myself. Being stoic and proactive enables me to not become paralyzed with fear after every minor struggle and inconvenience.

The 7 habits of highly effective people by Steven Covey are quite effective for people when they want to level up their lives. I can say this because I have long started changing my habits and attitude as college started because of some experiences with life. From being pre-active, to being pro-active. It is more peaceful and you’re in much control of the things you do and focus on those. It is a big helpful step for anyone. It helps one to improve their consistency and discipline in most things and avoid unnecessary distractions that will lead them off track or delay progress. Therefore, adapting to this kind of habits will eventually lead one to a more leading lifestyle and effectively do things.
As for the first 3 habits. Being pro-active is what’s going to make one’s life more peaceful since you shouldn’t think about things that are out of our own control, one shouldn’t really engage in pointless wars as it will only lead to one’s own demise. Stopping a bad habit will benefit you more than you could think. Also, accepting things for what they are and stop complaining about them is part of being pro-active. Find a way around them for your own sake or make your own way. Conceptualizing the destination, you want to go to is a good thing, it helps one to do every means necessary to get to that goal. Taking all those steps one by one and reminding you of your goal will motivate you on the long run. It will also help to keep you in track of the correct path. Putting the most important thing first resonates with the first habit, avoiding distractions will you keep on a steadier pace and practice your own discipline in things. I think they are all connected, you can start changing 1 habit and you continue and so forth as you improve. It is a journey to being great and to love life for what it is.
In all, it is a great list of habits and will definitely help anybody and get them to reach their goals and dreams. It should be more introduced to students since it is very helpful and surely beneficial. Surely, others who have adapted to these habits will say almost the same thing as they are living good lives and are quite the living proof of it.

I used to have a day set aside for rest, and while it was occasionally extended, I could still work at my own pace and finish my task days before the deadline. Now, anytime I take a day off, I would have regrets in the following day. Today's discussion has made me more conscious of the time I spend relaxing and working on activities. I will strive to achieve a work-life balance so that I can produce my best output.

As a college student, I experience struggles regarding some of the habits of being a highly effective person. I struggle most with being proactive and putting first things first. I struggle with being proactive since I often react to things that I cannot control which in turn, makes me feel down for the rest of the day. Instead of trying to fix these or focusing on those things that I can control, I dwell on its results which hinders me from improving my skills and the results that I got. With putting first things first, I struggle with this since I often get sidetracked and will sometimes prioritize those things that cannot help me reach my goal. Although I struggle with the two habits, I still try my best to improve these two since I am well aware that ignoring these will not help me reach my goal and in turn, make my life more difficult. Today, I focus more on improving these two habits since I can easily apply the rest of the habits in my life since the others already feel very natural for me and are already part of my lifestyle as a college student. Therefore, my end-goal is to improve and incorporate all the seven habits in my life to ensure life and college success.

As we watched the video about the seven habits of highly effective people it came upon me how people like me have that kind of mindset. The first habit dawn to me because I am a reactive person who likes to complain but really can’t do anything about it, as I listened to it, I’ve realized that I should focus on what I can control which is stated in the video, being a reactive person is not a good habit that I should have because it’s not healthy and since I’m now in college I should learn and to not be afraid to outgrew bad habits that I have even though it’s what I got used to. Habit number four: Think win-win is what got me hooked on wanting to read the book (the seven habits of highly effective people), why did it get me hooked up? Since I was a child I was really more on a competitive side of a student, I always wanted to be on top of the classes, I think of everyone as my competition but as I got older I realized that I should’ve not think about that but rather a win-win situation for everyone because all of us are just studying/working hard to achieve high remarks. Lastly habit number seven: Sharpen the saw, So I’m the type of person who procrastinates and does things at the last minute and says it takes time so I'm just going to do it until the last minute. As I was listening to it, it came to me how much time I was wasting every time doing nothing. Now that I’m in college I should aim for a change, I should start learning good habits that can lead me to being the person that I wanted to be in the future.

Throughout my high school, years there were a lot of circumstances that I would play games, read stuff, watch entertaining videos on the internet and after that I'd try to cram all my assignments into a single night. Resulting with no sleep, poor performance in school and basically ruining the way how I live in my everyday life

Now that I'm in my first year of college, I gained a deeper understanding of the significance of time management. I have learned that wasting time doesnt get me anywhere. Although, I must admit that the habit of procrastination is still there, I am genuinely committed to addressing it, improving myself, improving my study techniques, and making more thoughtful decisions so that I may succeed both academically and personally.

One aspect of my college life is that I've become a more reactive person due to the pressure and excessive overthinking. I often find myself worrying about scenarios like, 'What if I can't do it?' or 'What if I fail in a particular subject?' These thoughts make me feel down and anxious. However, after gaining an understanding of the habits of highly effective people, I've come to realize that I shouldn't be the type of person who habitually reacts this way. It's not good for our mental health. Since I'm still learning in college, I should not be afraid to outgrow this habit, and by taking small steps every day, such as setting achievable goals and seeking support from family and friends, I believe I can gradually shift from a reactive mindset to a more proactive one. College is not just about academics; it's also a valuable time for personal growth and self-discovery.

My key takeaways from the lesson are that success comes not only from focusing on how you can reach the end of the goal but also from recognizing the importance of having clear purpose in perceiving that goal. As I watched about the 7 habits by Steven Covey, where it was stated the habit of “begin with the end in mind," it really resonated with me because, as someone who entered college with the thought of just surviving and not really know what i wanted to do in the life as I was scared of being left out, it kind of woke me up from the daze that I was in and made me realize that this is not something that I only do for my current self but for my future. It opened me up to the fact that I am now stepping into a new era of my life and there is no room for having vague intentions to the things that I am pursuing right now. Moreover, as someone who also has self-doubt, it awakened me in a more confident sense that it shouldn’t get in the way, for it will only result in failure. I really have to do it scared and learn from whatever obstacles I’ll have. Overall, the lessons I gained today encouraged me to strive and live a meaningful life so that I can achieve things in the future without having any regrets about the path I take.

My struggle with procrastination and time management has been particularly difficult as a first-year college student. I frequently procrastinate on key assignments and wait until the very last minute to study, which has led to stress and poor academic performance. Because I am easily sidetracked by social media, online entertainment, and other non-academic activities, procrastination has been a serious problem for me. I frequently find myself squandering hours on hobbies that don't help me succeed academically rather than using my time properly to study and finish tasks. My ability for time management is also lacking. I frequently overestimate activities, and assignments and misjudge the time needed to finish homework. Due to this, there is never enough time for rest and self-care and there is a constant hurry to fulfill deadlines. I am, however, gradually learning to be more proactive by taking charge of my decisions and gaining a clearer knowledge of my long-term goals because of seeing the video on the 7 habits of highly effective people. To prevent last-minute cramming sessions, I'm starting to prioritize work and make clear goals for my studies. Even though I'm still developing, these habits have given me a useful foundation to deal with my procrastination and time management problems. They have given me hope that I can improve as a college student by working hard and practicing consistently.

At the same time, it can also allow us to develop good habits and take the initiative to learn. And it allows us to be more clear about the direction of our efforts.

College is a huge stepping-stone compared to high school since there is a great difference when it comes to the workload. At first, I thought it would be easier to manage my time since I had a lot of vacant slots in my schedule. However, now I am slightly struggling to balance all the given school works with the short-allotted time until its deadline.

I already demonstrate the habit of being proactive by not hanging too much on my mistakes in assignments and instead viewing them as opportunities to improve. I keep constantly reassuring myself that failing is only a step in the process and not the end. Another habit I strive to develop is visualizing an exact result since it helps me make better judgments when faced with a choice. Putting first things first is a habit I really struggle with, but it is also the one I want to develop the most. I frequently set aside assignments that aren't due until the next week and then wind up putting them off. My entire schedule is thrown off once this occurs. Which is why it is necessary for me to regularly set priorities in order to keep organized and reduce stress.

I think that after adopting the first three habits, the others would be simple to incorporate into one's daily life. Our lesson today could benefit not only myself but also other students who are struggling to balance their academic obligations or maintain focus on their goals. These 7 Habits could therefore greatly impact how one behaves in order to achieve a certain goal.

One of the 7 habits of highly effective people is being proactive. I must say I am sometimes reactive but I am more proactive. I often act based on my emotions and there are times that I complained first before starting a task, this doesn't help me that is why I'm trying to avoid it as much as I can. Even so, I know that I am more proactive because I see positivity and growth with the challenges given to me. Being organized keeps me from becoming unduly overwhelmed. Before, I was easily demotivated with the things that did not work the way I expected and I always aim for perfection in whatever that I do which only resulted me on not hitting deadlines. Perfectionism isn't always healthy, it can cause stress. Allowing myself to fail has taught me a lot things. I learned not to take things personal and accept failures because failure is inevitable. I rather choose failures by attempting something new than failure due to negligence.

Based on my learnings from today's discussion and especially on the Stephen Covey's video. That If I were to interconnect my learnings from the video and my aspect in my college life, is that to be proactive person. According to Covey, that this habit, proactive, teaches us how to control our lives. That being proactive giving us a chance to understand ourselves especially when it comes to choosing answer on facing certain life challenges. And connecting this habit on my life as college student made me realize that this understand myself more by not depending on the decisions from other people, because on my previous school life, I'm more a reactive person and I think if I was still being reactive person until college. I will no longer understand myself and just depend on other's decisions for me, and that's why I agree on Covey's statement that being proactive is highly effective habit for people.

One of my struggles in my college life is procrastination, and as a result, I occasionally put my academic grades at risk. As a college student, I shouldn't be proud of this, but I've been trying to do better. Sometimes, it often leads to last-minute cramming and rushed assignments, which can result in lower grades. Also the fear of not meeting deadlines or performing poorly on exams can be emotionally draining and harmful to my mental health. I realized that I need to consider implementing strategies such as setting clear goals, creating a study schedule, breaking tasks into smaller, manageable steps, and seeking support from professors, friends and family if needed to improve.

As an irregular college student who suffers from short-term insomnia from time to time I feel like im on that phase of life that people should not stay for too long, but here i am. Being self-aware of it doesnt make it better since even on my hobbies that i really love i tend to question if i do really likedoing them or am i just looking for a temporary escape from my responsibilities. Seeing how being a proactive could put someone on a good clarity and succeed in life i feel like i just keep losing. I mean maybe some people are supposed to lose? Like im convinced that on earth us losers are here just to make it easier for the winners.

As I learned about the "7 habits of highly effective people", I questioned myself, "Do I practice these habits?" I know that I don't, which provides an answer to the question of why I sometimes feel that I can't do what other people can. Although I am capable, I nonetheless lack the practice for these habits to develop.

Being proactive is essential. As a student, it is a must to practice time management and seek responsibility, especially in seeking growth opportunities. Since I was a child, being a leader has always been a weakness of mine. Being a leader makes me nervous. I have been known as a shy student. I lack the courage to take the initiative, especially in group activities. I simply want to participate and give what is assigned to me. But I soon came to the realization that if I continued to rely on or engage in that type of habit even now, I would never grow. By joining organizations, leadership programs, and other communication skills-building activities that will help me develop as a person, my objective is to step out of my comfort zone and overcome my weakness. The "7 habits of highly effective people" have inspired me to believe that, even though I'm still young, I'm already an effective person since I know I will gain from them as well, especially as I get older.

During our topic discussion on “The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People” by Stephen R. Covy, these are the things I personally reflected on. We all remember when we suddenly got an announcement from President Duterte during 2019 that classes were suspended due to a highly contagious virus that spread rapidly throughout our country. This is also the time where the accustomed face-to-face classes suddenly shifted to online classes which made all of us stay indoors only. I began to enjoy other things and prioritize doing them first before much important tasks. Online classes also made me lazy, and I definitely struggled with my mental health. However, this was back then in the pandemic when I just turned 14 years old. I can definitely say that I am immature, very young and only thought about enjoying things. However, I knew that I had a proactive mindset in me during this time because I was very careful with my academic career and was eager to finish high school.

College life just started recently and I can say that I am still not the person whom I want to be. Reflecting on these habits made me think that I am still in the process of applying them in my daily life. In addition, I am definitely making progress and slowly changing some of my habits from being reactive to proactive. We are still young and it’s okay to be a step behind others as long as you are making personal developments as you grow. The first three habits will also lead to the words “maturity” and “growth.” When you keep these habits in mind, you should be able to make sure to put them into actions as well. Our 4 years of college will not only give us knowledge of the field we chose, but it will also guide us to being the best versions of ourselves. These three habits will guide us to peace, positivity, and create a straight goal in our way of living.

Upon listening to today's discussion of the seven habits of highly effective people, I realized a lot of things, especially as a college student adjusting to a new school environment. Applying these habits such as being proactive, beginning with an end in mind, and putting things first, will greatly affect my life and it can lead me to success. Being proactive teaches us to control and focus on the things within our scope. It will also help us how we choose to react in a certain situations. For example, we were given a lot of school related tasks. Will you choose to complain or do the task immediately? What we cannot control is the implementation of the task, but the thing we can control is ourselves. Therefore, the right way to react is to do the task immediately. Another habit, which is beginning in the end of mind, basically tells us the importance of having a vision of our wanted outcome. For example, when you are going to program a website, you need to visualize how you want it to look in order to program the right codes. It is a perfect fit for the phrase "If you don't know where you are going, how will you know if you get there".
Lastly, putting things first. This habit taught us to always prioritize important things and to identify the difference between important and urgent. For example, you have a chore to do and an incoming task deadline. You need to consider and categorize if:
1.) It is important and urgent,
2.) It is Important but not urgent,
3.) It is urgent, but is not important, 4.) It is not urgent and not important.

In this case, the task with the incoming deadline shall be done first because it is important and urgent, while chores are important but are not urgent.

Malubay, King Parlie P.

Tv05

I used to get caught up in the web of procrastination, especially during my senior year of high school. It was as if I had developed a reputation for leaving things until the last minute. The phrase "I'll just finish or do the task tomorrow" had become my mantra, indicating that I struggled with effective time management. The consequences of my procrastination were not limited to the tasks at hand; they permeated many aspects of my life. It appeared to be a never-ending cycle. I'd come home from school exhausted and drained from a long day of classes and extracurricular activities. In retrospect, I can see how this procrastination harmed my academic performance, overall stress levels, and personal life. However, breaking free from this habit was a difficult task at the time. This struggle reminds me of Stephen Covey's timeless wisdom, as outlined in his book "The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People." These habits serve as a roadmap for personal and professional growth, and they could have served as a guiding light during those turbulent times. In retrospect, I realize that I can't change the past, but I can learn from it. Incorporating Covey's 7 Habits into my life has the potential to make a significant difference in how I approach tasks and responsibilities, ensuring that procrastination no longer controls my actions and decisions. It's a valuable lesson that has shaped my path to personal and professional effectiveness.

The seven habits of highly effective people by Stephen Covey is considered as one of the best guide to be successful because the book focuses more on the character ethic rather than the personality ethic. Between being proactive or being reactive, I have observed that I am more on being reactive. I focus more about complaining rather than improving myself to overcome a specific situation. I am also a type of person that goes with the flow which may possibly be the reason of my downfall in the future. I should start planning my future bit by bit and slowly but surely reach that goal. I need to sit down and list the things that should matter more to me now that I'm in college. I need to stop my poor habit of leaving everything the last minute because, as Miss Ally said, "Mahihirapan na kayo pag natambakan kayo.", doing everything the last minute will lessen the quality of your outputs because you didn't do it the moment it was given, which is nobody else's fault but yours.

As a freshman who transitioned from high school to college, it is quite challenging to adjust. From academics, social life, to personal life, it is challenging to balance them out as external factors such as pressure, expectations, and work loads pile up. However, even with these factors, I still try to do my best and I still strive to be better. In some activities and tests, I don't always get my expected scores, even with extensive efforts. I am the type of person that releases her frustration by complaining. But even with these results, it does not mean that I just give up; instead, I still reflect on things that I could have done better and it pushes me to strive for more effort next time. Furthermore, as I push myself to do better, I always try to think of what are my end goals. I know I have other or more chances to improve to reach my goal–to have better results next time, and I let this to inspire and guide me in order to achieve it. Lastly, in order to make my goals into reality, I prioritize the things that are important. Even if I have the liberty to rest or enjoy my time, I am the type of person that finishes tasks before doing something I enjoy. Even with this habit, I still struggle to have time management as I am a slow pace doer at some tasks. Resulting in sometimes not having time for myself and for my loved ones. Overall, in my adjustment period as a freshmen, I strive to seek growth, set goals, set priorities and have a good habit and practice of time management,. It may not be easy, but slow progress is still progress.

My mind is a hive full of problems, questions that are left unanswered, wounds left open, my life is like the sisyphus meme right now. The questions i mentioned earlier are, Why did i make it here? How much longer until i last? Why did i deserve this? If we're talking about effectiveness of a human being, i am far from useful or beneficial at the moment due to carrying two massive challenges. This first challenge (or we might as well call it a problem.) is regarding an issue in my family, not financially, mentally, they are like my support beams in life and they are collapsing, the reason is very private so i can't discuss it here. Second is college, i went to FEU because i have a general interest in tech related topics that i find cool, and to be honest, the true reason why i'm in college in the first place is because my parents made a deal with me, if i went to FEU, i'd be getting a budget of 100k on a gaming rig, so i couldn't pass. Yeah that's right, in college for a gaming PC, but i am confident that my real future starts when i get it, in case i fail entirely in college, i still have a chance to get back up into society, i can edit, study programming, all of that. Anyways, i've had enough rambling, it's 12AM, i'm going to sleep, night guys and gals.

Side note: I wanna personally thank Ms. Ally for being a very chill and cool person, i was the stuttering student in a black hoodie in your RPH class doing an introduction, i was still in a bit of a shock since it was my first day there, but you swept my shyness away and gave me a proper welcome soooo, thank u so much.

The first 3 habits of highly effective people that were discussed for me is a very essential thing for us college students to keep in mind and is very crucial to integrate in our lives. During this stage in our life, we are already transitioning into the real world and thus we must first, learn to be proactive. Things in life will come and go, you just have to have the mindset of "it is what it is" and move on from every failures in life and learn from your mistakes. Knowing what you can and cannot control in your life is a very important skill for any human being as this helps us mature more. Next, begin with the end in mind. I think college students nowadays have the "wing it till you make it" mentality and that is fine for me since I also do it. But for me, if you have a clear goal in mind in what you want to be or what you want to do in your life is something very important and something that will help anyone struggling with their life. Having a goal set at the beginning will help you conceptualize the path you are taking and with that, you can easily prepare for any challenges that you may face along the way. And finally, put first things first. This is something that most if not all college students struggle to integrate within their lives because of the menat distractions that they face or the many challenges that overwhelm them. For me, I honestly struggle with sorting which things to put first in my priorities and as a college student, that is what I aim to solve in order for me to becomemore independent.

To be honest I’ve realized this long before, but I have always been lacking in terms of goals or the motivation of getting goals and pursuing them. I wanted to change this mindset but it’s hard for I have been in a situation where I have been stressed to the point of giving up everything, it might even be depression, I still don’t know. That situation made me give up and stop doing everything for years. And the only way I was able to combat this was ‘not caring’ or just not overly think about everything. This way of thought also heavily affected my academic life by not taking everything seriously even if I got a low grade I promised myself not to take everything to heart and not overthink it, just to avoid my previous mistakes and avoid stress or depression. I mean to be honest the way I am now even if I ‘not care’ much about my grades or scores, I am more happy than I am back then. I was able to resume my school life with a more enjoyable energy. Even with tons of work I was able to stay positive and have been confident in myself even if it was just a little. The goals and motivation I have also been gaining them through time. It’s just that I want to take it slow. That’s just how I am as a person now. And that’s how I learn, slow and steady. These ‘7 habits of highly effective people’ made me realize how ignorant I am and how shallow my way of thinking is. While the ‘not caring’ part of my personality has positive outcome to some sense, I am still running away from my problems and to me I want to fix them. Or at least balance them out. I’ll try to follow these ‘guidelines’ to fix my habit of ‘not caring’ while maintaining the positive that I get from this personality. Overall we have our own way of life our own comfort but it is still better to step outside the box or circle of our comfort zone every now and then to experience and learn new things that we may adapt and apply in our life.

Dacoco, Neil Bridget C. - TC01

One of the things that I have been working on since graduating from junior high school is in the aspect of self-improvement. This I think has been what's keeping me back because I've been doing a lot of my tasks back then just for the sake of passing and not really trying my hardest. I had this mindset of as long as I can pass, it's all good. I also had this bad habit of not preparing for school and procrastinating everything to the last second. But now, I have been trying to get everything done as early as possible and especially now that I've learnt these different habits, I am now more motivated to continue what I've started. Finally, I don't think that this would only apply to me when I get a job, I can also apply it in my journey through college. This would also mean a good head start so my body can get used to it when I finally land a job. And since the video only stated 3 habits, there's still a lot more to learn from the other 4.

Think more about my self, my decisions and especially my future, I am not a kid anymore, I need to step up in order to achieve all the things I planned in myt life.

Challenges of new beginnings

The Topic that was discussed today was very interesting
and a little personal as well. Following a new routine for
my face-to-face classes, learning new topics every week and
at the same time managing my personal life as a whole. But
I know I can balance these new adjustments that life gave me
and I can't wait what's gonna be next in my time in this
new environment. My college journey altered a little bit, but it will still lead me to the finish line no matter what.

In my senior year of high school, I brought about a change that tested my habits and resilience. Moving to a science-focused school, I faced an intense workload that challenged my ability to manage time effectively.
Procrastination became my enemy, and "I'll do it later" echoed in my head whenever I tried to accomplish my schoolwork. This struggle led me to reflect on Stephen Covey's 7 Habits, which could have been a guiding light during those turbulent times.
Three habits stood out: proactivity, beginning with the end in mind, and prioritization. Proactivity empowered me to take control of my actions, combating procrastination. Starting with the end in mind helped me set clear goals, providing direction in a sea of demands. Prioritization ensured I focused on what truly mattered.
While I can't change the past, these habits now shape my present and future. They've transformed my approach to tasks and responsibilities, leading me towards personal and professional effectiveness.

My teacher/principal during my junior told us that "never settle for less". At the time, I have also read Nick Joaquin's essay named "A Heritage of Smallness" where he says that Filipinos "buys small, sell small, thinks small and do small". That's why I always look for a better one; A higher one . I know that the education on our country is not our strong suit. But that doesn't mean that I have to give up on studying. In the age of information, everything is on the internet. All you have to do is search it. Before I ask something, I realize that I have rely on myself to search it first before asking others. I hone my skills with every nick of time I can squeeze out of 24 hours. Then you'll start to realize how short 24 hours is to do everything you want. Even prioritizing everything things and sorting things out, you'll always be short on time. Having a win-win mindset also kinda scares me. Not every time we can have a win-win situation. Nature is not that kind and so does the human race. They may be a win-win situation right now, but sooner rather than later, the consequences of that choice will pop up. Over all, even though I know those things, I still does the following because of this thing called morality. Just like Robert Greene said on his book 48 Laws of Power "So much depends on reputation, guard it with your life".
