Currently, cold organ preservation is the standard of care in heart transplantation (Stamp et al., 2015). This method leads to increased myocardial ischemia and limits potential donors related to time. The TransMedics Organ Care System is revolutionizing the world of heart transplant. This is the first system that allows donor hearts to remain beating in a warm (34 degrees Celsius), perfused, and oxygenated state (Stamp et al., 2015). This allows for longer travel time from donor to recipient and helps to reduce the adverse effects from cold preservation. This could decrease the body's chances of rejecting the donor heart. This advancing technology could help to save more lives and lead to better patient outcomes.
