Three jocks and one geek get together and figure out how to launch small rockets into space.  They were inspired by Sputnik.  They were forced to stop by the police when one of the rockets causes a forest fire.
I think this movie is about scientific discovery and how  it means not giving up despite failures. The boys do not give up despite their initial attempts being failures.

Homer's dad flips out at the stepfather and rescues Roy Lee. The friends give up building rockets. Homer's dad is injured in a mine disaster. Homer then studies a book and figures out that his rocket did not start the forest fire. Homer and his friends go on to win the school science fair. They enter the National Science Fair as well. The workers at the mine go on strike. Due to a robbery at the National Science Fair, Homer is missing an important component. Homer needs the worker at the mine's machine shop to build a replacement part. At the end, Homer gets the part he needs, and he wins the prize.
